You must be a member to vote. ---------------- Ashley Paramore ---------------- Having grown up in a small conservative community I've found it very difficult to find other freethinkers. When I finally found out that there were more people with the same views as I had I grew excited, and immediately wanted to find community. Although I have only been exposed to the freethought community for about a year, I have been very active. Though I am no longer affiliated with them, I started working with the Rational Response Squad in March of 2007 by starting a chapter in Columbus, Ohio. With this I was able to bring together atheists/freethinkers/humanists and give them a sense of community, along with an opportunity to take part in activism involving separation of church and state issues. We've taken part in several different things, such as the Rally for Reason outside of the Creation Museum, the Atheist Blood Drive on the National Day of Prayer (our group going to Ohio State), and even going Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF dressed as Pastafarians all while handing out literature on freethought (to show that we are also contributing, caring members of society). We have also written letters to local teachers and the school board, along with senators regarding different issues involving church and state separation. I'm consistently trying to work with other groups and networking in order to bring freethinkers together, and accomplish various goals. While doing this I've become a member of American Atheists, started another group (Omnipresent Atheists), helped Ohio State's Students for Freethought get free speakers, attended the Atheist Alliance International Conference in DC, and am becoming a volunteer for the Richard Dawkins Foundation for Science and Reason. As a board member of the Secular Student Alliance I would continue to network on a larger scale, working towards bringing people together to find community and support various secular causes. I believe with the experience that I have I can aid in achieving this through the SSA, making freethought more accessible to the youth/students, and bringing people together to work towards several goals involving community and activism alike.
