Video: Family Hit with Muscular Dystrophy
from KXMB CBS Bismarck North D August 28, 2008
It's something you cannot prepare for hearing a family member has a life threatening disease. Now imagine being told this news three times. The Schwarz family in Bismarck has been hit three times with news a family member has muscular distrophy. Brad Feldman has their story. (Reading) It's what so many of us take for granted. (Reading) But for Jessica Schwarz it's the highlight of her day. (Reading) (Mathew Schwarz/ Jessica's Dad) We have to give stephanie credit for teaching Jessica how to read. Three decades ago, Jessica and Stephanie began their lifelong relationship as sisters. The two shared a special bond... not because they shared the same interests. At an early age they were both diagnosed with Myotonic Muscular Distrophy. (Mathew Schwarz/ Jessica's Father) It's where the nerves fail to conduct muscle tissue so it can affect not only your physical activity but it affects your cardiac stomach. In addition to the two sisters, Marcia, their mother was also diagnosed with the disease. With three family members now suffering from muscular distrophy, this family has had to change the way they live their everyday life. A barber chair had to be installed in the home so they can wash their hair. An oxygen system had to be installed in the families home because Jessica has a tube in her trachea to help her breathe. (mathew Schwarz/ ) Jessica ended up having a complete spine fusion in St. Paul when she was about six years old. And when she was about ten years old she asperated and destroyed some of her lung tissue. She is on a trach with oxygen support. But their biggest change came four years ago. Stephanie, passed away. (Mathew Schwarz/ ) It was a life changer, its something that we'll never forget. As a companion to Jessica that is something she has a hard time understanding where her sister went. (Sound - Reading) Now the family has turned the page to a new chapter all while never forgeting the past. Brad Feldman KX News The Schwarz's say they keep in contact with the Muscular Distrophy Association to stay on top of research and find out the best types of treatments available for their conditions. KX News will be airing the annual Jerry Lewis Labor day Telethon this Monday starting at seven in the morning.
