Video: Walking Across America - And Then Some
from KXMC CBS Bismarck North June 10, 2008
I'm 72, but it only lasts for a year. That's how cross-country walker Don Stevenson describes his age. Stevenson is nearing the end of a 13,000 mile walk to raise awareness of, and money for the fight against Huntington's Disease. He's walked many thousands of miles in the past ten years - raising money for many causes, from cancer research to battling Alzheimer's. His current walk began with 10,000 miles around his home state of Washington. He's capping it off with a 3,000 mile jaunt from the Space Needle in Seattle to the Empire State Building in New York. And he says things have been going well. (Don Stevenson, Charity Walker) Everything's going fine. I haven't had any problems in my joints or feet. The only thing is walking against the wind sometimes slows me down. But I still manage to get 30 miles a day in. Stevenson pays all of his own expenses on the trip - but gets help from people such as motel owners. Minot's Vegas Motel donated four nights lodging. (Don Stevenson, Charity Walker) Motel owners understand and seem to be sympathetic to the cause that I'm walking for. We've had free lodging every night since we left Washington. Stevenson rests on Sundays, so he puts in about 180 miles each week. He expects to arrive in New York City on September 15th.
