Video: City & Base To Fight Mosquitoes Through Air
from KXMC CBS Bismarck North July 15, 2008
As Minot gets set to welcome thousands of people for the North Dakota State Fair, the city is also preparing to get rid of some unwanted guests before fair-goers arrive. Tomorrow evening a mosquito spraying program will get underway with the help of the United State's Air Force. A specially equipped C-130 from Youngstown Air Reserve Station in Ohio will fly over Minot spraying a chemical that targets mosquitoes. The spraying effort has taken place in the Magic City for a number of years with positive results in mosquito reduction, but it also has raised concerns from a few people who are sensitive to chemicals. Don Teig is an Entomologist with the vector control unit out of Ohio. He says the chemical that is used is specific to mosquitoes and has no residual effect to the environment... (Don Teig, Med. Entomologist) We spray small droplets usually 30 microns or less and these adhere to the legs of the mosquitoes. That kills the mosquitoes but we only have to use a half an ounce an acre and that way we're able to control what we need to kill without causing any other harm to the environment, any harm to people or any other pets. To effectively knock down the airborne mosquitoes, the C-130 aircraft will be flying 150 feet above the city of Minot as it sprays. Flight navigator Chinky Kochansky says the flight path is much different from what most people are used to seeing over the city... (Maj. Chinky Kochansky, Navigator) Because Minot sits down in a bowl, it may appear that we're even lower. So depending on where you live on the north side of Minot, maybe on the plateau, or even on the south side on some of the hills down there it will appear that we are a lot lower than 150 feet but we are going to do our best to follow the contour of the land and that's why it may create an optical illusion where it seems that we are a lot lower than we actually are. The C-130 will be spraying over the Minot Air Force Base tonight and will begin spraying in Minot between 8 pm and 10 pm tomorrow night.

Video: Mosquito Fighting Begins in Willilston
from KXMC CBS Bismarck North June 03, 2008
The buzz around Williston may be all of the activity in the oil industry these days. But the literal buzz around Williston is actually just beginning - the buzz of millions of mosquitoes. The city is waging its annual battle against the bugs, hoping some new techniques and chemicals might help make this summer a little less buggy. Jim Olson reports... (Levi Zahn) Oh, they are terrible in the summer. (Steve Kemp) They are just insane. (Jim Olson, KX News) They're talking about mosquitoes. (Levi Zahn) Actually in the summer I've gotten used to not even being able to go outside. (Steve Kemp) During the worst of it when I go to mow my yard, I put a mosquito net over my head, I put my insulated coveralls on, and I put on work boots and leather gloves. (Jim Olson, KX News) Both Levi Zahn and Steve Kemp are doing more than just complaining about the mosquito problem in Williston. They're part of the group trying to do something about it. Zahn works on the front lines of the mosquito battle - (Levi Zahn) We'll be running around all the time. (Jim Olson, KX News) Doing things like taking a crew to spray standing water with chemicals designed to knock off the insects before they can escape their breeding grounds. (Levi Zahn) It's much easier to kill them in the water because they're in one specific spot where the water is. When they're flying they can be anywhere. Plus when we fog, they try to hide under leaves so when you put the fog on you can't get to them. (Jim Olson, KX News) And Kemp is a new member of Williston's Vector Control Board (Steve Kemp) Our mission statement is to provide some quality of life in the summer for the citizens of Williston and the surrounding area. (Jim Olson, KX News) Standing on the dike that protects Williston from waters of the Missouri River, Kemp says the same dike system contributes mightily to the mosquito problem (Steve Kemp) We've got approximately 25,000 acres of basic swampland that floods. And it's when that flood happens the eggs get activated, the larvae emerge, and those larvae emerge as adults, at least the ones we don't kill. (Jim Olson, KX News) He says aerial spraying here - and the efforts elsewhere in and outside of town are designed to make summer a bit more bearable. (Steve Kemp) It's about a month to month and a half that they're that bad. But we have such short summer so if we can get even a couple of weeks out of that month and a half that it's tolerable, that's what we're trying to accomplish. In Williston, Jim Olson, KX News. Tomorrow, we'll tell you about a ballot question coming up next week for Williston voters regarding the mosquito battle.
