Diabetes Awareness Month Start by adding whole grains to your diet. Eating three servings of whole grains a day can decrease your chances of developing diabetes by up to 30%. By: Dr. Melina Jampolis As November is National Diabetes Awareness Month, we want to offer some Diet and Exercise tips from Dr. Melina Jampolis a board certified internist, and one of 200 physician nutritionist and disease prevention specialists in the country, and the newest addition to the CNN Health team, on preventing and delaying the development of type 2 diabetes: Adding whole grains to your diet! Eating 3 servings (or 48 grams) of whole grains a day can decrease your chances of developing diabetes by up to 30%. Cereal fiber has been found to be more effective than other types of fiber due to the combination of antioxidants and soluble and insoluble fiber included. Dr. Melina recommends Post adult cereals, such as Post Shredded Wheat, which has 47 grams of whole grains per serving, nearly your entire day’s requirement in just one bowl! Simple switch outs will also help you get back on track, like choosing omega-3 rich nuts for greasy chips, heart healthy olive oil for butter and loading up on fruit instead of artificial sweets made with processed sugar. Diets high in vegetables and protein will keep you fuller than a meal composed of simple carbs, and also keep your sugar levels balanced throughout the day so you avoid that 3pm sugar crash. Being active plays a large part in diabetes prevention and management. But you may already be getting more exercise than you realized. Did you know doing 30 minutes of vacuuming is the equivalent of 15 minutes walking on the treadmill? Dr. Melina has a number of everyday suggestions for getting active, without becoming a gym rat Getting the flu is dangerous for anyone, but can be extra-risky for diabetes and other chronic disease sufferers. Eating a healthy diet is a natural way to get your body into tip top shape to fight off disease, as well as managing stress and getting at least 7 hours of sleep at night. Make sure to wash your hands regularly, cough into your elbow instead of your hand and avoid touching your nose, mouth and face to avoid spreading illnesses. About the Author: Dr. Jampolis is a board certified internist and physician nutrition specialist (one of only 200 in the country). Can Adding Vinegar to Your Diet Benefit Your Health?

Balsamic vinegarette enhances a salad Since vinegar is high in acetic acid it can increase the body s absorption of important minerals, including calcium, from the foods we eat. By: Natasha Morgan Over the years there have been claims that vinegar can cure a variety of health problems. Apple cider vinegar in particular has received much attention where proponents believe it to be packed with vitamins and minerals. However, scientific studies have clearly shown that vinegar contains only minute amounts of these nutrients and not sufficient to have an impact on your health. Recently, new focus has been placed on vinegar and how it interacts with your digestive system. The millions of people suffering from two of the most common diseases stand to benefit a great deal from this research. More studies need to be conducted but doctors and nutritionists agree that consuming a small amount of vinegar with your meal can have healthy benefits. Osteoporosis Getting sufficient calcium in our diet and having our bodies absorb enough to benefit our bones can be challenging. Since vinegar is high in acetic acid it can increase the body s absorption of important minerals, including calcium, from the foods we eat. Type 2 Diabetes and Prediabetes Carbohydrates provide the glucose required by our cells to produce energy. Insulin, a hormone created by our pancreas, helps with the absorption of the glucose into our cells. If these cells become insulin resistant, the sugar from food begins to build up in the blood. More and more insulin is then released resulting in insulin build up in the blood as well. Vinegar seems to slow down the digestive enzymes’ process of breaking down carbohydrates into sugar. The glucose can be absorbed at a slower rate preventing a sugar build-up in the bloodstream. Less insulin is released as the flow is better regulated. Suggestions for Use of Vinegar * Use vinegar based dressing for salads and coleslaw * Flavor fish and chips with malt vinegar instead of ketchup * Adding a little vinegar near the end of cooking a dish with beans will allow you to cut down on salt * Marinating tougher cuts of meat in balsamic vinegar and olive oil will add flavour and tenderizes the meat * Vegetables marinated in wine vinegar and olive oil make a tasty snack or appetizer * Grilling or oven roasting vegetables that have been marinated in vinegar and olive make a delicious accompaniment to any meal *Rinsing fruit and vegetables in a vinegar and water combo can help rid harmful bacteria and pesticides Note: This information is solely for informational purposes. What is Sweetening Your Diet Soda?

Diet Sodas contain artificial sweeteners Artificial sweeteners became increasingly popular. “Sugar-Free” became synonymous with “No Calories” encouraging guilt-free consumption. By: Natasha Morgan With obesity rates surging not only in North America but the UK, nearly everyone is on the lookout for an easy way to cut calories without giving up sugary foods and drinks. Too many sweets can increase your chances of gaining weight which in turn can lead to type 2 diabetes. An acceptable sugar substitute in food would lessen that risk but are we trading one problem for another? What’s the Latest? Last December, FDA approved a sweetener marketed under the names Truvia and PureVia. Rebaudioside A, one of the components of the stevia plant is extracted and used as a sugar substitute. The stevia plant grows in Paraguay and Brazil and has been used for centuries in South America. Although Truvia and PureVia are now deemed to be safe for human consumption many experts feel that it’s premature and more studies should be conducted before allowing Truvia and PurVia to be added to food and beverages. History: Artificial sweeteners have been available since 1870 when saccharin was discovered and used in chewing gum, soda and breath mints. However, subsequent studies revealed that saccharin caused cancer in rats and in 1970’s the substance was banned. New products thought to be safe soon entered the market and became increasingly popular. “Sugar-Free” became synonymous with “no calories” encouraging guilt-free consumption. Here is a review of the best-known sugar alternatives currently in use: Aspartame is sold under the brand names Equal and NutraSweet. Numerous studies have shown a link to a variety of cancers. One study pointed to a higher risk of developing brain tumours, lymphoma and leukemia. Sucralose is marketed under the name Splenda. Some studies have suggested that although it is used as a sugar substitute it may actually promote weight gain. There is also some evidence that sucralose could have a harmful effect on the digestive system. Cyclamate is also known as sodium cyclamate and calcium cyclamate. Sweet ‘N Low is a brand name for one artificial sweetener that contains cyclamate. Numerous studies have linked cyclamate to cancer in animals. Many years ago, the famous film star Gloria Swanson was reputed to have said” I wouldn’t put sugar in my cupboard, let alone in my body”. Before jumping to diet sodas and artificial sweeteners, perhaps we should consider moderation. This article was written specifically for notjustthekitchen.com. Good Eyesight Avoiding stress, getting enough sleep and finding enough hours in a day is certainly challenging but with poor eyesight all our tasks become even more difficult. By: Natasha Morgan As we reach middle age, we start to pay attention to advice that will keep our minds and bodies in good shape. Putting on a few extra pounds, menopause and wishing our arms were a little longer when reading small print are irrefutable signs that we are aging. For many of us, an early sign that we are not getting any younger is reaching for our readers more often. We take our eyesight for granted until it begins to deteriorate. We start to worry. Where is this taking us? Is there a way of slowing down the process? We can t stop the clock from ticking but we can take action to stave off the worst effects. Here are some tips from experts: Fish Recent studies show that at least two servings of fatty, omega-3 rich seafood not only helps your eyesight but your heart as well. Best sources: Salmon, trout, sardines, herring and Arctic char, fish-oil capsules Nuts Nuts have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that affect eye health since they may reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. Add: 1/4 cup of nuts a few times a week Lutein Protect your eyes from damaging UV light with this phytochemical found in many veggies. Best sources: Spinach, Swiss chard, kale, collard greens, rapini Lesser amounts: Green peas, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, nectarines and oranges. Zinc There is some evidence that zinc can benefit eye health but findings from studies using zinc supplements have been mixed. Best sources: Oysters, seafood, red meat, poultry, yogurt, wheat bran, wheat germ, whole grains and enriched breakfast cereals Antioxidants Vitamins C, E and beta-carotene fight against free radicals that damage cells in your body. Best source of vitamin C: Citrus fruit, cantaloupe, kiwi, mango, strawberries, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, red pepper and tomato juice Best source of vitamin E: Wheat germ, nuts, seeds, vegetable oils, whole grains, kale Best source of Beta-carotene: Dark green vegetables, carrots, winter squash, sweet potato, nectarines, peaches, mango, papaya Low glycemic foods Avoid eating high glycemic foods such as refined (white) carbohydrates and sugary products that may contribute to inflammation and cause oxidative damage to your cells. Best source of low glycemic foods: Beans, lentils, nuts, pasta, brown rice, sweet potatoes, steel-cut or large-flake oatmeal, oat bran and bran cereals, apples, oranges, peaches, pears, berries, yogurt, milk and soy beverages. Experts agree that a lifestyle including exercise and a healthy diet will go a long way toward keeping us in shape. Avoiding stress, getting enough sleep and finding enough hours in a day to do everything on our list is certainly challenging but with poor eyesight all our tasks become even more difficult. 6 Tips to Feel Beautiful Today!

Become Beautiful Today We believe that we somehow need to change who we are, how we look, and what we do in order to finally be sexy, attractive, and drop-dead gorgeous. By: Sarah Maria How many times have you waited for something to change so that you could finally start feeling beautiful? If you are like most women, the answer is all the time. Here is the problem: most of us tend to live with the delusional belief that we somehow need to change in order to be beautiful. It usually sounds something like: * When I lose this extra weight, then I will be attractive. * If I can just get my abs a little more toned, then I can wear that bikini I love. * I feel so much better after I put on my make-up in the morning. * I looked much sexier before I had these wrinkles. * My hair looks drab and lifeless until I get it colored. Unfortunately, we think these stories, these lies, that we have been taught are true. We believe that we somehow need to change who we are, how we look, and what we do in order to finally be sexy, attractive, and drop-dead gorgeous. This is a lie an erroneous, ubiquitous, and often painful lie. The truth of the matter is that you are inherently, unconditionally, and absolutely beautiful and lovable right now, without changing a single thing. Fortunately, very fortunately, you can expose these lies and choose to no longer live under their spell. Ready to get started? Here are 6 simple and sure-fire ways to help you feel beautiful today: 1. Become Aware of What You Are Thinking Simply become aware of the stories you are telling yourself so that you are no longer reacting on auto-pilot. Through awareness alone, you can begin to transmute your reality and transform lies into truth. Actively acknowledge that there is no inherent truth in the belief that you need to change something about yourself in order to be attractive. Consider that you can start feeling beautiful immediately, in this moment, without changing a single thing. 2. Set an Intention to See Beauty Setting an intention is simple: intend to create a different reality for yourself. Here are some examples: I intend to experience my inherent beauty. Or: I intend to see my beauty and perfection at all times. Or: I intend to know I am inherently beautiful, lovable, and worthwhile. Do you ever see your reflection in the mirror and grimace at your wrinkles, vowing to purchase the latest anti-wrinkle cream? Set an intention to find beauty in your reflection. Or when you undress, do you ever suck in your stomach, berating yourself for not yet losing those 5 extra pounds? Set an intention to appreciate the body that you have right now. Do you ever go shopping for clothes and wish you were a size (or more) smaller? Set an intention to unconditionally accept your body. Hopefully you get the idea; set an intention to see yourself through the eyes of beauty. 3. Take a Meditation Moment Meditation is the mental equivalent of brushing your teeth. This means that it is an essential and indispensable daily activity designed to help rest and rejuvenate your body, cleanse your psyche, awaken your spirit, and help you live a life that you love. Nourish yourself with instant meditation moments throughout the day. Are you waiting at the bus stop on your way to work? Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths, allowing yourself to connect within. Are you making dinner for the family? Take 30 seconds and focus on the sounds, smells, and sensations in your environment, letting them nourish your senses. Are you in the shower, getting ready to start your day? Turn your attention to the feeling of warm water cascading against you, gently caressing your body, and allow yourself to relax. These meditation moments can happen anywhere, anytime 30 to 60 seconds of closing your eyes and connecting within can make all the difference in the world. 4. Your Body is Your Best Friend Your human body is your truest ally. Befriend it and it will serve you tirelessly. Treat it as you would a dear friend: Feed your body with healthy food, taking the time to give it proper nourishment. Remember to exercise, and make it enjoyable. If the gym makes you cringe, opt for yoga, Pilates, dance, or good old walking. Anything to get your body moving will do wonders. Relaxation is key. In our harried and hurried world, it is essential that you remember to relax and rejuvenate. Instead of critiquing your body for not being enough of this and for being too much of that, offer it gratitude and appreciation for its unwavering support and devotion. 5. Create Meaningful Moments Every day is filled with countless tasks and errands: going to work, talking with friends, picking up the kids, supporting your significant other, washing dishes, going to the gym, visiting the supermarket, shopping on and one it goes. Remember that you can imbue each moment with meaning. It can be as simple as smiling at everyone you meet, reacting with compassion and love instead of anger, or making sure to tell your friends and loved ones how much you care about them. 6. You re Smoking Hot, Inside Out Remember, you were born beautiful. Believing that you are unattractive is a learned habit. You can unlearn it and discover the Joy, Peace, and Love that are your natural state and birthright! So that is it 6 Simple Steps. 6 simple steps to start feeling beautiful, right now, in this moment. You don t have to go anywhere or do anything to experience the Beauty that you already are. In fact, there is nothing you can do, say, or buy that will make you any more perfect, any more beautiful, or any more desirable than you are in this very moment. Simply know this, and you will revel in your true beauty. ©2009 Sarah Maria, author of Love Your Body, Love Your Life: 5 Steps to End Negative Body Obsession and Start Living Happily and Confidently About the Author: Sarah Maria is the author of Love Your Body, Love Your Life. Which Hairstyle Would You Choose? I needed more research and the internet was just the place to find how stylish baby-boomer women were wearing their tresses. By: Natasha Morgan Women spend money on expensive wardrobes, skin creams, make up, manicures, pedicures, botox and even surgery in an effort to stave off signs of aging. Yet the single most aging item is often forgotten: The hairstyle. Take a close look at your friends’ hairstyle. Then, look in the mirror. When was the last time you and they changed their style. Was it a couple of years ago or a couple of decades ago? We tend to get comfortable with one look. We tell ourselves that it suits us. It’s easy to manage since we’ve blow-dried, curled and fussed with it for years. I confess … I am guilty. Even when my hairdresser suggested something new, I went home and restyled it my old way. I just couldn’t get used to the different looking me. Then I started thinking that I’ve had the same hairstyle for more than 10 years. Am I refusing to update my style because I can’t move from my comfort zone? Yup… I had to face it. So forging ahead with my new-found courage, I started paying attention to women neighbors, women at the mall, library, home owners’ meetings and even the golf course. I wanted a youthful style but not one that made me look like “mutton dressed as lamb”. The “spiky” look was definitely not me, nor was the Mary Tyler Moor flip. I needed more research and the internet was just the place to find how stylish baby-boomer women were wearing their tresses: Katie Couric, Meredith Vieira, Meryl Streep, Hilary Clinton and Oprah. This was going to take awhile. When I narrow my search to a few, I ll make another trip to the hair salon but this time, I will be armed with pictures of possible styles. My hairdresser and I will need an honest discussion and this time I promise to listen. Breast Cancer Rates Drop When Women Add Fibre to Their Diet
from Not Just The Kitchen - Podcasts powered by Odiogo on October 04, 2009
Duration: 0
Duration: 0
Prevent Breast Cancer A large study of postmenopausal women revealed that when women increased their intake of fibre they could guard against certain type of breast cancer. By: Natasha Morgan Here’s what the experts learned: • A diet rich in fibre affected only hormone receptor-negative tumors. • The kind of fibre women consumed made a difference. Types of Breast Cancer Tumors Breast cancer tumors are either hormone receptor-positive or hormone receptor-negative. Hormone receptor-positive cells are fuelled by the female hormones estrogen and progesterone, while hormone receptor-negative cancer cells are not. What Foods Contain Fibre? All plant foods contain fibre to varying degrees but only soluble fibre affect the receptor-negative tumors. Soluble fibre, as the name suggests, dissolves in water. When it reaches your stomach, it forms a gel and slows the rate of digestion and absorption. This is how soluble fibre controls blood sugar and insulin levels which have a direct impact on breast cancer cells. Which Foods Are Rich in Soluble Fibre? Oats, oat bran, psyllium-enriched breakfast cereals, barley, legumes, citrus fruit and apples all contain generous amounts of soluble fibre. Other Ways to Combat Breast Cancer Researchers further suggest that paying attention to the following dietary factors may also guard against breast cancer: Carbohydrates * Slow burning, or low-glycemic carbohydrates carry a lower risk of developing breast cancer and include the following foods: Grainy breads, brown rice, pasta, sweet potato, bran cereals, steel-cut or large flake oatmeal and most types of fruit. * Fast buring, or high-glycemic foods such as white bread, refined breakfast cereals and sugary drinks elevate the glucose and insulin levels that increase your risk of developing breast cancer. Flaxseed Natural compounds in flaxseed bind to estrogen receptors on breast cells and block the action of the body s own estrogen. By adding 1 to 2 tablespoons of ground flaxseed to hot cereal, yogurt, smoothies, applesauce and baked-goods, you can reduce your risk of breast cancer. Low-Fat Diet Studies have shown that reducing fat intake can dramatically increase the survival rate of women diagnosed with estrogen-negative breast cancer. Stick to skim milk, no fat yogurt and cheese with less than 15 per cent fat. Lean, skinless poultry, fish and beans are also a better bet than meat. Fats and oils should only be added when necessary. Vegetables Your body can eliminate carcinogens by regulating detoxification enzymes in the liver. Phytochemicals that are found in some vegetables help this process. Bok choy, broccoli, broccoli sprouts, broccoflower, broccolini, brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, rutabaga and turnip all contain phytochemicals. Alcohol Some experts suggest that alcohol may cause chemical reactions in your body and: • Make breast cells more vulnerable to the effects of carcinogens • Affect the liver s processing of substances • Inhibit the ability of cells to repair faulty genes • Increase estrogen levels Weight Gain Excess weight has been clearly linked to breast cancer. Obesity can increase circulating estradiol, the most potent form of estrogen in the body. Several decades of scientific study have produced guidelines that would reduce the risk of developing breast cancer. Although the disease is more prevalent in older women, it’s never too early to adopt a healthy lifestyle. This article was written specifically for notjustthekitchen.com. Organic Vegetables Did you know that 73% of the fruits and veg checked by the FDA tested positive for pesticide residues, to be fair, some are worse then others. By: Adria Vasil Maybe it s the half-Greek in me, but there s nothing that makes me giddier then the sight of a table full of food (well, other than actually eating the food). Trouble is most of what we stack onto our plates isn t just weighing on our hips, hearts and cells, it s also bloating the planet with packaging, pesticides and climate-changing gases. How can you get your fill without, er, tipping the ecological scales? Just follow Ecoholic s 5 earth- and body-friendly tips. 1. Eat Close To Home: And by that I don t mean ordering takeout from your local pizza joint! Search for produce grown in your own county/state. If you can t find homegrown garlic/greens/grapes at the grocery store, don t be shy, ask the produce manager for more local options and trove farmers markets for freshly picked goodies. Not only does buying locally translate into fewer dirty fossil fuels trucking or shipping that food to you, it also means you re helping to preserve nearby farmlands and valuable green spaces. Plus, betchya didn t know that the vitamin content of a just-picked tomato is higher than in one plucked before it was ripe then carted 2500 miles. It tastes a hell of a lot better, too. To track down the greenest local food sources near you, punch in your zip code at localharvest.org. 2. Try Tofu Tuesdays. Eating fewer meaty meals isn t just good for your cholesterol count, your waistline and your pocketbook it s also one of the top moves you can make for the planet. Gassy livestock literally burp and, um, expel more of the world s greenhouse gases than cars, trains and planes combined! In fact, one University of Chicago study found that eating 20% fewer animal products every week reduces your greenhouse gas footprint as much as switching from a sedan to an ultra efficient Prius! And since, despite what your mom told you, there won t always be more fish in the sea, pick your seafood choices wisely with the help of a pocket-size guide from seafoodwatch.org. Smaller fish like sardines aren t only more sustainable than big daddies like tuna, they re also way lighter in pollutants like mercury. 3. Get It Fair and Square: Quick, pick three things that get you through the day and I ll bet you twenty bucks that coffee, chocolate and sugar make the list. Since none of the above grow on U.S. soil (well other than beet sugar), you want to be sure you buy the kind with a Fair Trade Certified label on the package. Why? Well, the workers that pick those ingredients are generally paid so poorly they d have to work 3 days just to afford a Starbucks grande latte! Fair trade certified farms, on the other hand, pay farmhands in developing countries a decent wage, give their families access to health care and education and forbid the use of ultra toxic pesticides (which makes them better for your health, too). Bonus: your sugar-/caffeine-/chocolate-rush blissfully guilt-free. 4. Pass on packaging (especially the plastic kind): What goes into a Ding Dong is one thing; what s wrapped around it is a whole other ball of plastic. Just stop emptying your kitchen s trash bin for a week and you ll find yourself knee deep in the food packaging (think milk cartons, cereal boxes, frozen food trays and all the double to triple layers of wrap around cookies, crackers, you name it). No wonder nearly a third of all the garbage we toss every year is packaging! Avoid the whole landfill bound mess by buying in bulk and bringing your own storage sacs shopping (you ll find some at reusablebags.com). Choose loose lettuce instead of the boxed stuff. Buy concentrated ingredients like broth in dry form instead of bulkier watered-down cartons. And when you have a choice, pick the jam/juice/soup that comes in glass (it doesn t leach dodgy toxins like tin cans and some plastics can). 5. Fork out for the right organics: In my dream Ecoholicland, everything in the grocery stores would be deliciously organic and we could all afford to eat chemical-free 365 days a year. But in the real world, most of us have to budget our pesticide-free picks. If you have young children, look at what they eat the most of (like milk or grapes) and switch those items to organic first. And though, yes, 73% of the fruits and veg checked by the FDA tested positive for pesticide residues, to be fair, some are worse then others. Spend your money on certified organic peaches, peppers and spinach before buying, say, organic broccoli (since conventional broccoli is quite low in residues). For a guide to the 12 worst and best produce items you can print or download to your phone, head to foodnews.org. Of course the cheapest (and tastiest) organics are the ones you grow yourself in your backyard. Okay, fine, so it s a little late to start tomatoes, but you re right on time to plant spinach, kale, lettuce and more. Money can t buy greener greens. ©2009 Adria Vasil, author of Ecoholic: Your Guide to the Most Environmentally Friendly Information, Products s NOW, where she has been writing the Ecoholic column for five years.
