This is a tribute to some of the musicians who have died during the past year. Daniel Grayling Fogelberg (August 13, 1951 -- December 16, 2007) was an American singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, whose music was inspired by sources as diverse as folk, pop, classical, jazz, and bluegrass music. The Innocent Age, released in October 1981, was Fogelberg's critical and commercial peak. This double album song cycle included four of his biggest hits: "Leader of the Band," "Hard To Say," "Run for the Roses", and "Same Old Lang Syne," Robert Gerard Goulet (November 26, 1933 -- October 30, 2007) was a Canadian American Grammy- and Tony Award- winning entertainer. He rose to international stardom in 1960 as Lancelot in Lerner and Loewe's hit Broadway musical Camelot. His long career as a singer and actor encompassed theatre, radio, television and film. Porter Wayne Wagoner (August 12, 1927 -- October 28, 2007) was an American country music singer. Famous for his flashy suits and blond pompadour, Wagoner introduced a young Dolly Parton to his long-running television show. Together, "Porter and Dolly" were a well-known duet team throughout the late 1960s and early 1970s. Parton wrote the song "I Will Always Love You" after Wagoner suggested she shift from story songs to focus on love songs. Jeff Healey (born Norman Jeffrey Healey, March 25, 1966 -- March 2, 2008) was a blind Canadian jazz and blues-rock guitarist and vocalist. He formed a band and after being signed to Arista Records in 1988, the band released the album See The Light, featuring the hit single "Angel Eyes" and the song "Hideaway", which was nominated for a "Best Instrumental" Grammy Award.While the band was recording See The Light, they were also filming (and recording for the soundtrack of) the Patrick Swayze film Road House. In 1990 the band won the "Entertainer of the Year" Juno Award. Other hits have included "How Long Can a Man Be Strong" and a cover of The Beatles' "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" (which also featured George Harrison and Jeff Lynne on backing vocals and acoustic guitar). Isaac Lee Hayes, Jr. (August 20, 1942 --August 10, 2008 was an American soul and funk singer-songwriter, musician, record producer, arranger, composer, and actor. Hayes was one of the main creative forces behind southern soul music label Stax Records, where he served as both an in-house songwriter and producer with partner David Porter during the mid-1960s. In the late 1960s, Hayes became a recording artist, and recorded successful soul albums such as Hot Buttered Soul (1969) and Black Moses (1971) as the Stax label's premier artist. His best known work, for the 1971 blaxploitation film Shaft, earned Hayes an Academy Award for Best Original Song (the first Academy Award received by an African-American in a non-acting category) and two Grammy Awards. Richard Edward Arnold (known as Eddy Arnold) (May 15, 1918 -- May 8, 2008) was an American country music singer. With 146 songs on the country charts --including 28 number one hits -- Arnold ranks among the most popular country singers in U.S. history. Only George Jones had more individual hits on the country charts but, according to a formula derived by Joel Whitburn, Arnold is the all-time leader in an overall rankings for hits and their time on the charts. Bo Diddley (December 30, 1928 -- June 2, 2008, born Ellas Otha Bates), was an original and influential American blues singer, guitarist, and songwriter. He was known as The Originator because of his key role in the transition from blues to rock and roll. He introduced more insistent, driving rhythms and a hard-edged guitar sound on a wide-ranging catalog of songs. Diddley's song "Who Do You Love" can be heard in the intro credits to the movie La Bamba. He appeared on a 2003 episode of the sitcom According to Jim entitled "Bo Diddley", had a small role as a pawnbroker in the 1983 film Trading Places, starring Eddie Murphy and Dan Aykroyd, and appeared in George Thorogood's "Bad To The Bone" video. The song "Bad To The Bone" itself is a re-work of Diddley's "I'm A Man." Eric Clapton's 1992 "Unplugged" included a cover of Diddley's "Before you accuse me". After hearing the sad news about Jeff, I found an old cassette I had of a gig I did where he was a guest. This was a Christmas party at CBC in 1991. Jeff's really ripping it up on a slow blues. I'm on bass. Sorry for all the bass clams, but it was a jam and I was having some fun. I used to jam all the time with Jeff at different open jams around town. He loved to jam. I was in his band for a bit (before he was famous). Haven't seen him for a while. I was shocked and saddened to hear the news. This is a cassette of Jeff jamming with the band at the CBC Christmas party, 1991. I thought folks would appreciate hearing this unreleased little gem. I found the cassette in a closet. I just added some stills to the audio. I played bass, Gerry Fielding, drums, and Rob Quail, the second guitar. I jammed with Jeff piles of times in the 80's. I will miss him.
