In this episode of Kurt’s Photoshop Tips & Tutorials, we are going to go over the process of creating an HDR image using the tools available in Photoshop, and then we are going to go back and create an HDR image with the Photomatix Photoshop plug-in. If you are unfamiliar with HDR images, they are creating by combining images of a scene that were taken using different exposures. This allows the image produce details in bright and dark areas of the image that would be normally blown out or underexposed. A search for HDR images on www.flickr.com will show many examples of HDR images.

Photoshop expert Ben Willmore reveals the tips, tricks and secrets behind creating amazing images using High Dynamic Range techniques.

When I was searching for an HD video camera to purchase, I kept coming back to the Sony AVCHD brand. I had good luck with using one of their still cameras before and had decided it was time for an upgrade. I spent several months researching the different types of cameras that I could use. The one difficulty that I had when doing this research though, was the need to know what video quality a Sony AVCHD video camera would offer. After scouring the internet I ended up with nothing. But I took a leap of faith and purchased a HDR-UX1 model from their AVCHD lineup. It ended up being a very good camera. =) In my desire to fix what has gone wrong before I have decided to create several (18 to be precise), test videos with my new camera. We went to Yoyo's basement club where NSG introduced me to a couple of his friends - one of which was Mark Ronson. On the day of the shoot we arrived back to my car half an hour late and I got a parking penalty of £80 (for just two hours of parking). Edited with Adobe Premiere Pro 2.0 and cropped into a '2.4:1' aspect ratio by exporting final video into 1920x792 resolution. Most shots are enhanced with color grading filters using 'Magic Bullet Looks' - effects such as the 'Warm & Fuzzy' and 'MisFire Vignette' (additional plug-in for Premiere Pro). Selected shots were further enhanced with a 'Depth of Field' look by applying a 'lens blur' effect in Adobe After Effects 7 Pro. Exported into an un-compressed AVI at 1920x792 (2.4:1 aspect) and exported again using QuickTime Pro for the HD video and a YouTube compressed video with the H.264 codec before finally uploading.
