Issues Under Fire: Democrats Could Use A Litmus Test of their Own

Issues Under Fire: Democrats Could Use A Litmus Test of their Own

from RetroVision Media on November 30, 2009
Duration: 660
This Sunday past, Texas Republican Dick Armey slurred his way through a reasonable explanation of his Party’s recent idea to provide a litmus test for future nominees to pass, if said nominees wish to receive support from the RNC. It is a rare occasion when we find ourselves in complete agreement with the Republicans. Mr. Armey’s assertion that the Party simply wanted to establish a foundation of core values, was the most responsible and forward thinking proposal the Republicans have come up with in decades. Keep in mind; we in no way agree with those core values, we simply agree it is a good idea for the Democrats to emulate.

GRITtv: Media Myths and Misses on Health Care

from popular posts - blip.tv (beta) on October 29, 2009

Nancy Pelosi unveiled the House health care reform bill today, and most of the media immediately focused on the horse race. Did she have to give up too much, or was it a win for progressives? Yet the details of the bill remained largely unreported, and the debate around the public option remains a question of "dead or alive" rather than one of details, cost-saving, and whether the bill would actually insure more people. Meanwhile, Joe Lieberman seized headlines by announcing that he would filibuster any Senate bill that contained a public option, and it was up to bloggers like Marcy Wheeler to point out that the media wasn't factchecking Lieberman's statements. Is the media complicit in the failings of health care reform? Allison Kilkenny of Citizen Radio, Adam Green of the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, Diane Archer of the Campaign for America's Future, and Bob Fertik, President of Democrats.com join us to discuss the coverage, good and bad, and what it means for the fate of the public option.

Let's hear it for false fact studies from lobbyists! This one seems to have served as a declaration of war. Last week, America's Health Insurance Plans released a study claiming that healthcare reform would cause Americans' premiums to soar, and hey presto... Suddenly, the Democrats are acting like they're actually in a fight. Nancy Pelosi has vowed to bring a plan with a robust public option to the House floor, and even Senate leader Harry Reid Twittered his intention to strip insurance companies of their protections from anti-trust laws. Reid says that the law allows insurers to fix prices and monopolize markets in ways that are illegal and uncompetitive. Surprise surprise, some senior Democrats are starting to back him up. The President even mentioned the exemption in his weekly address. So are Democrats finally growing spine? Well, not so fast. Obama still won't commit to ending the exemption that allows insurance companies to do with our health what we don't let Microsoft do with computer software . And he hasn't declared a war for Medicare for all. Getting insurers to agree to cover everyone is nice -- but without a public option, it does nothing to drive down price. With new polls showing that public support for the public option has only increased since August, it's time for Obama to take a stand. Americans didn't elect a president of insurance, they elected a president of the country. It's Obama's job to lead on this issue, to fight for the promises he made on the campaign trail: a public plan to keep insurance companies honest, no individual mandate and no taxes on employer-provided care. It's time for the Democrats to fight for measures that will actually improve care, not just sound nice on CNN. Go for it.

Once again, the mainstream media missed the boat on quite a few issues this week, though CNN did realize that Latinos deserve some attention. While still airing Lou Dobbs, though, it's hard for us to take them seriously with their attempts to reach out, and they missed such major stories as a general strike in Puerto Rico, attempts to fearmonger around the census, and the continued standoff in Honduras.Joining us to discuss these issues and more are Roberto Lovato of Presente.org and New America Media, Erica Gonzalez of El Diario/La Prensa, and Cathy Areu of Catalina magazine and the Washington Post magazine.Rana Husseini has been covering "honor killings" in her native Jordan and across the world for years, and has become one of the world's most respected voices on the subject. Her aim is to at least give them the right to be reported, that they died," and her new book, Murder in the Name of Honor , gives voice to many of these women. Husseini speaks to Laura about her experience working on the book and offers suggestions for what activists can do to help.In Puerto Rico last week, over 100,000 citizens marched in protest of Republican governor Luis Fortu o's job cuts. Fortu o threatened to charge protesters with terrorism, but is now backing off. SEIU sent us video urging action in Congress, keeping the pressure on Fortu o to do right by Puerto Ricans. This week's Got Docs feature is The End of Poverty? The film gives a deeper perspective on what really causes global poverty, and the role of our financial system in keeping people around the world struggling to survive. We also have video from Kate Clinton and Senator Bernie Sanders, and the Huffington Post Investigative Fund. Thanks for watching!
