Who Was Ozzie Nelson?

Who Was Ozzie Nelson?

from The Palomar on September 14, 2007
Duration: 0
Recently, Bill Cahill asked the question about Ozzie Nelson and whether Ozzie did anything other than swing? During the 1930's, Ozzie Nelson was one of the most popular swing bands in New York City, with 15 percent of the United States population and the center of the broadcasting and entertainment industry. In the 1920's, he learned to accompany himself singing with a ukulele as well as the banjo. Nelson also taught himself the saxophone. In college, he played football and earned a gold medal in boxing. By 1929, he was playing with a small swing orchestra at a tavern on City Island in New York. Ozzie’s striking resemblance to Rudy Vallee, with a similar singing style, allowed for his popularity. In the 1930’s, The New York Daily Mirror ran a contest to see who was the most popular orchestra in town. Nelson learned that newspaper dealers got credit for unsold papers by returning the front page only; he in turn secured hundreds of ballots which were on the back pages and submitted the ballots in the contest. Ozzie’s band beat Rudy Vallee and Paul Whiteman and won the contest! The Glen Island Casino on Long Island was looking to book its first swing band, and Nelson's manager used the contest results to get the booking. Nelson met Harriet Hilliard in 1931, who became his full-time singer and wife. Paul Whiteman was the only other jazz orchestra with a full-time singer, Mildred Bailey. By 1932, Ozzie Nelson's orchestra had a fully sponsored radio show and was among the most popular bands around. By 1952, the Nelsons and their two sons, David and Ricky, went into television, following Ozzie’s 1951 feature film (Here Come the Nelsons). He was also both producer and star of his own radio and TV shows. Ozzie Nelson, Hugh Beaumont (Leave It to Beaver) and Fred MacMurray (My Three Sons) were all popular TV dads at the time. Ozzie Nelson died in 1975 of lung cancer. I hope that was a good answer, Bill! That was the most I could glean from the internet, Wikipedia, ask.com, etc. Spencer "Wolf" Smartt Dallas, Texas Email Me
