Hanford's F Reactor Gets a Cocoon Check Up

The Hanford site in southeast Washington is home to nine closed reactors that once made plutonium for atomic bombs. The ghostly buildings along the Columbia River are isolated and get few visitors. One of the oldest of the reactors just got a checkup to make sure nothing's gotten in or out. Richland Correspondent Anna King reports whether anything was found amiss.

Uranium Worker Compensation

Federal Government Releases Review of Hanford Waste Treatment Plant

Nasty Pool Once Filled With Radioactive Sludge Being Cleaned Up At Hanford

Just paces away from the last free-flowing stretch of the Columbia River sits a infamous holding tank. The giant underground pool at the Hanford Nuclear reservation was filled with radioactive fuel rods, sludge and garbage shielded by water. The only problem? It's leaked millions of gallons of that radioactive stew. Now workers have emptied the pool of its dangerous contents. This week they started to dismantle the structures surrounding it. Our Richland Correspondent Anna King visited the site to check up on the demolition project.

Imagine radioactive goo the consistency of peanut butter. Now imagine 177 massive tanks full of that dangerous goo. Some of it has leaked into the soil at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation in southcentral Washington State. But federal officials say they have a final solution for this nuclear garbage. It's called the Vitrification Plant, or the Vit Plant for short. Hanford Tank Waste Continues to Bedevil Clean-Up Crews

The Hanford Nuclear site in South Central Washington State is the most polluted radioactive waste dump in the country. At the center of the Hanford reservation are hundreds of buried tanks that hold waste left over from plutonium production during World War 2 and the Cold War. A multi year, multi billion dollar clean up is underway. But there are problems: an accidental spill of tank waste shut down clean up for nearly a year. Recently, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) raised concerns about how much longer the aging underground tanks can hold up. Correspondent Austin Jenkins reports in the first of a two part series on Hanford clean up efforts.

Hanford Workers Get Another Shot at Compensation

Scientist Collects Hanford Dust

A Massachusetts scientist is spending this week standing on Tri Cities area toilets and peering under refrigerators. An Indian tribe and a Hanford watchdog group hired him to analyze dust. Washington Closure Hanford Gets Fined
