Video: Google Maps Navigation feature walkthrough

Video: Google Maps Navigation feature walkthrough

from Gear Live on October 28, 2009

One of the nicest features in Android 2.0 is Google Maps Navigation. In a nutshell, it s Google Maps with turn-by-turn GPS navigation, and voice guidance. Google has put together a video that introduces Google Maps Navigation, which we ve embedded above, but there are some of the features that stand out to us: Live traffic: Since Google Maps can show you traffic info, it s obviously built-in to Google Maps Navigation, at no extra cost. Routes always current: When you search for directions, Google Maps Navigation searches the cloud, and gives you the best current route based on the most recent data Layers: You can overlay different types on data over your maps, like restaurants, gas stations, and more. Live street view: This is just awesome. You can use the Google Street View feature to get a fantastic visual of your surroundings while driving FREE!: Google Maps Navigation is free. That includes the GPS, the live traffic data, and the always updated maps. That is a big deal. The first handset to ship with Android 2.0, and thusly Google Maps Navigation, will be the Motorola Droid. We'll just go ahead and get the bad news out of the way: if you call yourself a North American, and you're not gutsy enough to find an importer, you'll probably never own the downright beautiful device shown above. Known as the iSTATION S3, DigitalCube's latest arrives with 8/16/32GB of storage, an HDMI output, a battery good for 20 hours of audio playback (or 8 hours of video), an expansive 3.5-inch AMOLED display, WVGA (800 x 480) resolution and support for a veritable smorgasbord of file formats. Sadly, we've no price or release date to share, but by all means, give that read link a tap if you're looking for more eye candy. Bleeding Edge TV 316: Yelp Monocle Hidden Feature Brings Augmented Reality to iPhone

Bleeding Edge TV 316: Yelp Monocle Hidden Feature Brings Augmented Reality to iPhone

from The Bleeding Edge MPEG4 on August 28, 2009
Duration: 235
My pal Robert Scoble announced that the Yelp iPhone and iPod touch app that was recently updated included a hidden Augmented Reality feature. Obviously, as soon as we saw, we had to give it a shot, and we figured we d do it on video. Augmented Reality apps use the camera on the iPhone, along with overlaid information, to present location data while looking at the real world - it s very cool, and you can expect a bunch more of these types of apps to make an appearance on the App Store very shortly upon the release of iPhone OS 3.1. In this demo, we show you how to unlock the Monocle mode in the Yelp app, and also give you a look at what exactly it does. For now, our early opinion is that it s a cool idea it just needs to be refined a bit to be truly useful. We were able to spend some quality time with the Zune HD a couple of days ago, and we put together this video walkthrough of the interface on the device. Unfortunately, we weren t connected to Wi-Fi, so we weren;t able to show web browsing, downloading from the Marketplace, or Social, but this gives you a really good idea of what to expect when you get pick up your Zune HD (available for pre-order now) come September 15th. Our favorite feature? I ll probably be using the pinned items on the side quite a bit, especially for the recently synched stuff. Quick access to things like that have been much needed on touch devices. A runner up would have to be the quick scroll in the music browser. Again, it saves you on just quickly swiping a bunch of times, hoping to get to the right spot. All in all, we re impressed. Of course, we will have a full Zune HD review when we get our own device. For now, be sure to read up on everything we know about the Zune HD. FineDigital's FineDrive iQ Special helps commuters learn FineEnglish

FineDigital's FineDrive iQ Special helps commuters learn FineEnglish

from Engadget on August 05, 2009

Ah, those crazy-beautiful multi-purpose navigation devices of South Korea, is there anything they can't do? If your answer is that they can't teach you English, think again. The iQ Special features a language trainer built on voice recognition software from its predecessor, the FineDrive X700, alongside the usual fare of goodies we westerners rarely get to see: SiRF-based GPS, DMB digital TV, video and music playback, and even TPEG traffic alerts. Priced at 469,000 KWN ($384), this PND is available today, and it's probably redundant to note that it won't be making its way to English-speaking countries any time soon -- not that we doesn't need it, mind you.
