HEALS

HEALS

from recent posts tagged uganda - blip.tv (beta) on September 18, 2009
Duration: 1029
Since 1986, a rebel group called the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) has led a brutal civil war in northern Uganda. The primary victims of this war have been the children. Over 30'000 children have been abducted by the LRA and forced to become child soldiers in the rebel army. Many children s parents were killed by the LRA and families have been forced from their ancestral land into overcrowded internally displaced camps. Due to the war, children have lost their homes, their parents and their childhood. Jolly Grace Okot is a former child soldier who escaped the rebels after 2 years. Jolly recognized the needs of these children and was inspired to start an after-school program in northern Uganda for war-affected children called H.E.A.L.S (health, education, arts, literacy and sports). H.E.A.L.S provides play and sports activities, art, music and school scholarships to help rehabilitate war-affected children and give them hope for their future. HEALS is a story of hope for war-affected children in northern Uganda. This documentary shows how H.E.A.L.S uses activities to heal trauma, provide life skills and bring back a culture that is being lost due to the war. Verite footage of traditional dance and music, sports, games and art classes are interwoven with stories from Jolly Grace Okot and three 15-year-old children. Through Jolly, we are guided through the H.E.A.L.S program and the children tell their devastating personal stories and the life-changing benefits of participating in the H.E.A.L.S community.

Prayercast 004 | Uganda

Prayercast 004 | Uganda

from popular posts - blip.tv (beta) on July 31, 2009
Duration: 138
The name Idi Amin may sound familiar. It is infamously linked to the nation of Uganda, which underwent a brutal 8-year period of violence under his presidency in the 1970?s. It is estimated that roughly 300,000 may have died under his reign of terror. Life in Uganda has not been easy even since then. Two military coups in the mid-1980?s have been followed by the 23-year rule of President Museveni, who has done much to rebuild the Ugandan economy. Peace, however, has yet to firmly take hold in the nation. For the past 23 years, Uganda has struggled against the brutal Lord?s Resistance Army, a rebel group based in Sudan. An estimated 30,000 children have been abducted to serve as child soldiers or sex slaves. Up to 1.8 million people in northern Uganda have been displaced due to violence and the fear of child abduction. Despite all of this, the church in Uganda is large and the response to the gospel has been substantial. Yet the church also battles against widespread nominalism, false teaching and corruption. We need to pray for the restoration of a country left riddled by years of war and terror, and also for the revival of a church so badly needed to shine the pure light of the gospel. In closing, think about this. How would we want people to pray for us if we were among the millions in Uganda, destitute both physically and spiritually? Let?s pray like that today.
