The high-class filly didn't make it, but the "blue-collar worker" of the barn did. Thunder Gulch, sent to the East last winter by D. Wayne Lukas as one of his second-string race horses, the "forgotten man" of the stable, won the 121st Kentucky Derby by 21/4 lengths today over Tejano Run at odds of 24-1. And one head farther back in third place, after passing six horses in the homestretch, came the star colt of the Lukas cast of talent, the juvenile champion of last year, Timber Country. But Serena's Song, the 36th filly to run in the Derby, failed to become the fourth to win it. After leading for one mile, she wearied of the battle and faded, finishing 16th in the field of 19 and casting doubt on the wisdom of the decision taken one week ago and announced by Lukas on national television: "She will run in the Derby and dare to be great." "She dared to risk greatness," Lukas said after the race. "She could have got loose on the lead, and did. But she ran up fractions that she couldn't live with." But Serena's Song was not alone. Also failing to cash in their dreams in America's most prestigious race were a string of horses who could have made history: Eltish, the colt from England, ran sixth; his traveling companion, Citadeed, ran ninth. Ski Captain, the first Derby horse ever from Japan, finished 14th. Talkin Man, last year's juvenile champion of Canada and winner of the Gotham and Wood Memorial in New York, ran up front, stalking the leaders into the homestretch, then dropped all the way back to 12th. Julie Krone, with a chance to become the first woman to win the Derby, never got Suave Prospect into contention and finished 11th. And the horse's trainer, Nick Zito, thereby failed in his hot quest to win the Derby for the third time in five years. But on this sunny and warm afternoon, all the dreams were played out before a gigantic crowd of 144,110, the second-largest throng in Derby history, jamming the old track and its grass infield with costumes, color and cash. The only time more people gathered under the famous twin spires, which became the track's landmark 100 years ago, was for the 100th Derby in 1974 when 163,628 watched Cannonade win. By contrast to last year's Derby, run in a heavy rain with roughhouse bumping that wrecked the chances of Holy Bull and other favorites, this one came close to being a textbook race. Most of the speed horses and favorites this time started from remote stalls in the two starting gates, but they turned to the inside as the gates opened and nobody got jostled or harassed. Serena's Song, running as a betting entry with Timber Country, broke to the inside from the No. 13 slot and seized the lead over Wild Syn, winner of the Blue Grass Stakes, and Citadeed and Talkin Man. Tucked behind them: Thunder Gulch, who broke from the No. 16 slot. "Obviously, we were concerned with the draw," said his jockey, Gary Stevens. "But 50 yards out of the gate, I was already where I wanted to be. The speed cleared out the inside, and I was ecstatic." Serena's Song, cruising in fast fractions, won the quarter-mile run to the first turn, where all kinds of mayhem took place last year. She glided the quarter mile in 222/5 seconds, too speedy even for a speed horse who still had to run a mile. She covered half a mile in 454/5 seconds; three-quarters in 1:101/5 ; the mile in 1:353/5 . Chasing her came Talkin Man, Wild Syn and Citadeed, with Thunder Gulch content to be fifth in a remarkably clean race. They came down the backstretch in the same formation, around the far turn and finally they reached the head of the stretch and turned for home. "She was right in there to the eighth pole," said Corey Nakatani, the filly's rider. "But then she started getting tired." In racing, it is predictable that a fast pace is likely to tire the frontrunner and set the stage for the closers. And there they came. Thunder Gulch shot from third place past Serena's Song and Talkin Man, and took the lead. Tejano Run, showing the powerful finishing kick that he displayed in the Jim Beam Stakes and the Blue Grass, moved from 10th place to third as they entered the stretch and kept driving into second place at the wire.
