Cheap and Green Insulation: Recycled Paper CelluloseCheap and Green Insulation: Recycled Paper Cellulose
from Ryan Is Hungry
November 29, 2007

QuickTime | Flash | iPod | Ogg share by: vPIP Embed (copy s dad started building on some property he owns in Rural Virginia. The first structure built was the garage/workshop. Jay and I were eager for the chance to try out some green building materials as an alternative to the usual stuff. Before traveling over to the east coast for Turkey Day, we did some research along side his pops about what the cheapest, most green insulation material could be used (which could also be purchased at a major box store near by). We found that Recycled Paper Cellulose was the least expensive material you could buy, at 25 cents per sq. foot and it is available through most building material suppliers. The alternatives were The Pink Stuff , fiberglass rolls at about 50 cents per sq. foot. I was wary of using fiberglass because of its notorious itch inducing particles that will irritate not just your skin, but your lungs as well! If the particles ever become loose and get into your ventilation system, this can mean big trouble for your internal organs and cancer fighting immune system. Another recycled and mostly benign insulator are the trendy new denim rolls. These are made from recycled scraps from jean manufacturers. This was my top choice until I did a price check. This stuff goes for $1.00 per sq. foot. Yikes! The price factor is still top priority when you have to build, those square feet can add up fast. And when you re trying to convince a retiring baby boomer to go green even though it costs 4 times as much, they re gonna laugh and buy the usual Pink Stuff . So we were happy to find an alternative that was cost effective and recycled. The only downside was the actual packaging of the material. It came in plastic bags, which most of you know, drive me crazy and can not be easily recycled or degraded. A would love to see this company really pull through and start packaging the product in, you guessed it, recycled paper!

Real Goods: A Workshop at The Solar Living InstituteReal Goods: A Workshop at The Solar Living Institute
from PodTech.net: Technology and Entertainment Video Network
July 06, 2007

The Solar Living Institute, home of Real Goods (one of the first Green Catalogs), is like a big, green playground. The 12-acre plot was developed as a demonstration site for renewable and clean technologies like solar and wind power, green building and permaculture. We were excited to be able to spend some time on the campus while participating in a workshop on how to build an electric vehicle. Although the workshop turned out to be a wee bit overwhelming, we felt we got a pretty good primer into the world of electric vehicles. That said, we encourage y'all to take a workshop or class on some of these green ideas. Meeting people and gathering resources for getting started on this stuff is a good motivator for really making change. Tags: Real Goods, green building, permaculture
Termites? Earthquakes? Mold? No Problem with a Steel FrameTermites? Earthquakes? Mold? No Problem with a Steel Frame
from YouTube :: Videos by BuildingGreenTV
June 29, 2007

As Building Green TV host Kevin Contreras often says, if you're going to build it, build it green. When he weighed the options, a steel post and beam frame for his straw bale dream home made the most sense. It's half the weight of wood after all, and yet it has twice the strength. It is guaranteed to be straight, comes pre-cut and is made from 66% recycled materials - leaving our precious forests untouched. Termites and earthquakes beware! Watch this episode of Building Green for more on the latest in steel framing and other green building solutions for a greener, healthier, more energy efficient home. Top it all off with a green roof, and you are well on your way to helping save the planet. Originally built for The World s Fair in 1939, it s been used as a movie studio, a naval base and now for residential housing. By 2020, the city plans to have this little plot of land revamped and functioning as green as possible. Jennifer Kass, from the Dept of the Environment, explains the city s process of planning holistically with all aspects of urban living in mind. Treasure Island could possibly inspire future models of sustainability because of its unique geographic challenges. From transportation to green open spaces to building and construction to where you get your groceries- if it can happen self sufficiently on a 400 acre island, maybe it can happen anywhere. What Makes it Green, Building Greener BuildingsWhat Makes it Green, Building Greener Buildings
from KUOW 94.9 Weekday with Steve Scher Hour 1
May 03, 2007

Our buildings are major contributors of greenhouse gas emissions and big consumers of energy. If a greener world is supported, how will green buildings help? As the green building movement grows, with more builders using sustainably produced materials and building smaller buildings with a lower energy profile, consumer education is lagging. How are consumers to know if the claim for a green building is legitimate? How is green building defined? Do greener practices translate into a lesser environmental impact or not. Do we get the building equivalent of Performance hybrid SUV's or the Prius? Tomorrow on Weekday: Toy boat, Toy Boat, Toy Boat: The opening day of boating season
