FAP844: Nursing shortage, cheaper textbooksFAP844: Nursing shortage, cheaper textbooks

FAP844: Nursing shortage, cheaper textbooks Listen now: Student Financial Aid News + Inside Higher Ed: An annual survey by the National Retail Federation to project back-to-college spending by college students sees a 7 percent drop this year, to $599.38, from $641.56 last year, Reuters reported. With college students paying more for gas, there is less money available for other goods. + US News: Textbook prices, which have nearly tripled in the past 20 years, may finally start to decline thanks to some new laws, technology, and upstart companies. Undergraduates who take advantage of the new alternatives could easily slash their textbook costs in half this coming academic year. That means the typical student could save more than $300. We re making progress, says Nicole Allen, who heads the affordable textbook drive for the Student Public Interest Research Groups. Things are changing for the better. + New laws, eBooks, open source, and rentals + Reason #5: piracy is easy. 31 seconds to find the book mentioned in the article on a DVD with 235 other textbooks, and no, I m not going to tell you how, but that s how easy it is + $83 on Amazon Scholarship Update + Connecticut League for Nursing Scholarships + CLN has a scholarship program for state residents enrolled in an accredited, CLN supporting member nursing education program in Connecticut. Awards are presented at the annual Student Day, held in late fall every year. + Students in Diploma nursing programs are eligible after completing the first year of the two-year program. + Students in Associate degree nursing programs are eligible after completing the first year of the two-year program. + Students in Bachelor s degree nursing programs are eligible after completing the third year of a four-year program. + Students in RN to BSN nursing programs are eligible when entering the senior year of study, verified by the dean or director of the program + Students in graduate nursing programs are eligible after successfully completing 18 credits in the nursing program, verified by the dean or director of the program The number of scholarships and the amount of each reward is determined by the Scholarship Committee and based on the amount of money available and the applicants qualifications. + $25,000 total + October 10 deadline + Details at our free college scholarship search site Mail Bag + Chris writes in: My mom, who is just turning 60, went back to school for nursing, and because her grades are so good in the prep classes, she s been accepted into the actual program. + My mother currently works at the hospital full time as a unit clerk, and makes just over $17/hour, and after taxes and retirement, she brings in just under $1,000 every two weeks. + Her tuition for the course will actually be covered by the hospital and student loans, so that s not a problem at this time. + The brick wall we ve hit comes from the course itself. It requires 40+ hours per week in class time and real-world experience. Real-world experience is basically interning without pay. She would have to change her work schedule to evenings and weekends, and would be lucky if she could handle 20 hours/week. + At her current pay, her income would be reduced to roughly $1000 / month. + Her living expenses amount to roughly $1800 / month. + She needs to come up with an additional $800 / month for 9 months. Then she would return to work full-time for the summer. Then she would complete her second year where she would again need $800 / month for the next 9 months. + Since this technically isn t tuition , where would we start to look for this kind of money? Obviously grants and/or scholarships would be the optimal choice, but most are geared for young people with their entire lives (or at least several decades of productivity) ahead of them. Any idea where to start looking for seniors grants/scholarships? + Barring free money and your own $10K scholarship, what are her other options, short of selling her house in this down market? I d appreciate any direction or links you could send our way. + Today s scholarship, of course + This is a unique time and opportunity for your mom due to a severe shortage - demand is on your side + Connecticut has had a major nursing shortage looming for quite some time + Contact CNA, CLN, CT DHE, and the administrators of every hospital nearby, and ask if they have a program for COLA issues exactly as you ve described + Would someone exchange a promissory note for $7,200 or more in exchange for X years of service? + Check out Three Rivers Community College nursing scholarships directory Did you enjoy today s show? FAP843: How to pick a student credit card, $25,000 scholarship Listen now: Student Financial Aid News + Bloomberg: 9% of companies plan to hire. Wages fall 2.4%. 28% of companies increasing prices. Tough economic times - if you re on the employment trail, there s a difficult road ahead in the short term. Read Purple Cow and Free Prize Inside, both by Seth Godin, for ideas on how you can personally weather the slump and help your respective companies turn things around. + BusinessWeek: Universities and their alumni associations have discovered an unlikely and disturbing source of revenue: Increasingly, they are selling students personal information to big credit-card companies eager for young customers. + Using state public disclosure laws, BusinessWeek has obtained more than two dozen confidential contracts between major schools and card-issuing banks keen to sign up undergraduates with mounting expenses for tuition, books, and travel. In some instances, universities and alumni groups receive larger payments from the banks if students use their school-branded cards more frequently. + Some of the country s best-known and largest schools have multimillion-dollar credit-card deals, including the Universities of Michigan, Minnesota, and South Florida. + Inside Higher Ed: New York’s governor, David A. Patterson, plans today to back the creation of a major new student loan program for the state, potentially providing hundreds of thousands of students with loans at significantly lower interest rates than they now obtain through private borrowing, The New York Times reported. The loan proposal is part of the final report of a special commission on higher education, appointed by Eliot Spitzer during his brief term as governor. The final report — also due out today — reiterates many of the themes and ideas of the commission’s first report, and calls for a major infusion of funds into higher education. It is unclear, however, how much money and political will are available for these ideas. Schools that register for the Bee receive materials to hold their competitions. Each school winner takes a written test, and the top hundred scorers in each state and territory compete at the state level. State-level Bees are held in the spring, and the winner of each state Bee proceeds to the national competition. The 55 state and territory winners meet at National Geographic Society headquarters in Washington, D.C., for the national competition. The number of contestants is narrowed to ten finalists, who compete for a $25,000 college scholarship. The second- and third-place winners receive $15,000 and $10,000 scholarships, respectively. + Deadline October 15 + Your school must enroll - contact your principal! + Details at our free college scholarship search site Financial Aid 101 + How to pick a student credit card + You probably don t need one + A debit card is good enough 99% of the time + A stored value card is also a great idea + If you do get one, look for rates and fees + No annual fees! + Grace period - as long as possible + Look at how rates are calculated - many are Prime Rate, which is not bad now. from Financial Aid Podcast Daily Free Internet Radio On Demand
July 18, 2008

FAP842: Illegal downloads of textbooks, Free Stuff Friday Listen now: Student Financial Aid News + Boston Globe: Faced with soaring prices for textbooks, cash-strapped students have discovered a tempting, effective, but illicit alternative - pirated electronic books, available for free over the Internet. + It s not just textbooks that are being downloaded improperly. Ed McCoyd, director of digital policy at the Association of American Publishers in New York, said a survey in May located about 1,100 titles available illegally online, including novels and books on current events. + But textbook piracy is particularly seductive, McCoyd said, because students are often hard-pressed to pay for academic books that can cost more than $100, three times the price of most other books. + Well duh. College is more expensive than ever, the economy s in the toilet, and every other expense is through the roof. What did you expect? + The Student Loan Network does not condone infringement of intellectual property, but stay tuned in August for our cheap textbooks eBook + Inside Higher Ed: Undersecretary of Education Sara Tucker’s plan, students would find out almost immediately after submitting their much shorter federal student aid application — truncated to just 9 questions from the current 102 — exactly how much federal grant, subsidized and unsubsidized loan and tax break funds they would qualify for, based on their adjusted gross income and number of family members. (Right now students find out at that stage, usually in January or February, only how much their family is expected to contribute, which may discourage rather than encourage students to go to college, Tucker said.) The awards would be indexed based on an as-yet-undetermined formula — something like the average cost of attendance at a four-year public institution, for instance — that would essentially set a maximum amount of federal aid for which a student could qualify. + The sources of federal aid would be greatly streamlined. Federal grant aid, which now flows through about a dozen programs (and rising), would be consolidated into just the Pell Grant Program, providing an additional $1.7 billion that would increase the maximum grant by $370, Tucker said. (No Perkins Loans, no Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants, no SMART Grants.) What the student loan program would look like is unclear, Tucker said, given the recent turmoil in that sphere. Work study and education tax breaks would continue to be part of aid packages, the latter particularly for upper-income students. + Still some work to be done, but that s some progress Scholarship Update + Show Us Your Art Scholarship + Submit a picture of a drawing, painting or other mixed media project of your original work for a chance to win $1,000 scholarship. FAP841: Read your student loan applications before you sign Listen now: Student Financial Aid News + Star Tribune: A class-action lawsuit has been filed against St. Paul-based student lender Northstar Higher Education for allegedly breaking its contract with student borrowers. + The suit, filed Monday in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles, says the lender broke its contract by eliminating its T.H.E. Repayment Bonus a 0.75 percentage point interest-rate reduction to cope with the credit crunch. + While Northstar might be facing financial difficulties comparable to other banking institutions, this does not provide it with carte blanche to breach its contractual obligations, said the suit, which is seeking monetary damages and contractual interest-rate reductions for anyone who had a loan with Northstar on Feb. 18. The suit was filed on behalf of plaintiff Jennifer So of California by the law firm of Kabateck Brown Kellner. + Northstar has yet to receive a copy of the complaint. Image via Wikipedia FAP838: Student loans and bank failures Listen now: Student Financial Aid News + IndyMac Bank failed over the weekend, taken over by the FDIC. + NASFAA: After rushing to enact a law that makes it easier for students to obtain more federal student loans, Congressional leaders and lobbyists for for-profit colleges may now be close to a deal to help those colleges avoid an unintended result of that new law, The Chronicle of Higher Education reports. The parties are seeking a measure to keep the colleges from running afoul of the requirement that at least 10 percent of their revenue comes from nonfederal sources. The colleges have been concerned about the requirement, known as the 90-10 rule, ever since Congress this past spring raised the limits on the amounts students may borrow under federal loan programs. One option under discussion would allow the colleges to temporarily treat the $2,000 of newly allowed loan funds as part of their 10 percent. + Bloomberg via NASFAA: Five months after the collapse of the $330 billion auction-rate securities market, bonds backed by student loans show no signs of recovering, Bloomberg News reports. The $85 billion of auction-rate securities sold by state agencies and private lenders to finance student loans are emerging as the most toxic type since Wall Street dealers abandoned the auction-rate market in February amid worries about the financial health of the bond insurers who guaranteed the debt. The collapse of the auction-rate market compounded the financial problems for lenders after Congress last year cut the subsidies it makes to those who sell bonds backed by federally guaranteed loans. + U Ohio: Ohio Governor Ted Strickland today signed an executive order establishing The Ohio GI Promise, which changes Ohio’s residence requirements to allow all veterans of the U.S. Armed Services, their spouses, and dependents who choose to attend Ohio colleges and universities to do so at in-state tuition rates. FAP837: Review of the NASFAA National Conference, Free Stuff Friday Listen now: Student Financial Aid News + A review of the NASFAA national conference in depth + A longer than normal show Scholarship Update + Scholarship Points, kids. + Scholarship Search Secrets eBook. + PodCamp Boston scholarships Free Stuff Friday + I d encourage everyone, regardless of whether you re a student or not, to actively research cost-saving options for fuel and food. Take a look at community supported agriculture (CSAs) in your area - you may find a community farm that will save you significantly over the grocery store. + If you use oil heat, ask your furnace manufacturer if your heater can accept a mix of fuel oil and waste vegetable oil, or even straight waste vegetable oil, which could save you hundreds, even thousands, of dollars this winter. + For those families with fireplaces, investigate the potential cost savings of a wood stove fireplace insert, which will let you burn firewood instead of propane, natural gas, or oil. + Consider alternate modes of transportation - Matthew Ebel has recently highlighted a conversion kit for a bicycle for $1,000 that will transform a regular bicycle into an electric vehicle, which could be practical for those with relatively short commutes. If your budget permits, consider a hybrid vehicle; at the least, reduce your driving and inflate your tires to the maximum safe pressure. + Be mindful of your other utilities as well. Use power strips with off switches to prevent appliances like DVD players from consuming electricity unnecessarily. If you have access to your toilet tank, put a fist-sized rock in the tank to reduce the amount of water used per flush. If you find that your toilet performs satisfactorily, replace the rock with a brick or sealed, water-filled glass bottle to further reduce the water used per flush. + Make liberal use of free entertainment. Your local library has likely evolved quite a bit since your early childhood days, and if you haven t been back recently, you may be surprised at what you ll find. Local libraries often have significant CD and DVD collections which you can borrow for free or at nominal cost - my local library charges $1 per week for hit movies, and no charge for CDs and non-fiction DVDs, including past seasons of popular TV shows. + There s tons of free entertainment online - download popular podcasts like the TED conference for some videos that will blow away anything you can find on television, plus thousands and thousands of other great shows. There s still lots of free wireless to be found at places like public libraries, some fast food and coffee shops, and other locales. You can find great audio and video all over the place, and if you download it onto a laptop, you can take it home with you and watch it with the entire family. + Check out the events section for your town on popular event sites like Craigslist, Upcoming, and Eventful, as you may find terrific local music festivals and other community activities that are free. Many unconferences such as BarCamp and PodCamp are free, and those that charge may have scholarships for students to attend. + Your town may have lots of free stuff you don t even know about. In the town I live in, there s a weekly events calendar which is poorly organized and poorly publicized, but has lots of great events and activities on it, from free play groups for kids to free movie nights, and many other free or very low cost activities. Your tax dollars already go to support these activities, so make sure you check out your town s municipal web site. + Check out the Friday episodes of the Financial Aid Podcast, where we highlight every week a bunch of free stuff online and offline that can save you significant money.
