When Gary Krakow said no gPhone in 2008, people scoffed, but they were wrong. T-Mobile will have the Android, but Google is facing tough roadblocks that prevent the company from distributing its operating system to other phones. This leaves the door wide open for the competition. Author: TheStreetTV Keywords: android apple blackberry bold cell centro cool gphone iphone palm phones Added: June 25, 2008

This is the third year that I will be in Las Vegas, walking the halls and interviewing companies, generally keeping an eye on things, and marveling at the entire consumer experience from a geek s point of view. Todd and I will be producing our regular shows, in addition to formal, produced videos of the show for TPN. We are also experimenting with a second background channel that will let our listeners and viewers have some idea of what it is like to cover the CES show as an independent podcast producer. To get some test material, I shot the production of tonights SDRNews episode on video, and will be figuring out how to get it posted on various video sites in the next day or two. I ll have some other video on the preparations for the big trip - and see what we can do to get this working. Stay tuned ! Thumbnail Views: Via Thumblicio.us SEARCH ANY STORY YOU HEAR ON THE PODCAST The Downside of Wireless Keyboards The wireless keyboard encryption system (at least on Microsoft keyboards - the Logitech units haven t finished testing yet) seems to be leaving a lot to be be desired from a security standpoint. That is a part of the tradeoff that we make for the convenience. I have several wireless keyboards in constant use - and not a fancy bluetooth one to be found. The HP, Dell and Microsoft wireless in the house are all 27 Mhz units - and it seems that breaking the encryption is pretty close to trivial - in fact just the sort of project that would be an excellent science fair project for a bright ninth grader. I have to admit that a lot of the convenience factor comes from the removal of cord tangles at the desk from multiple keyboards. In fact, the more that I consider the risk and tradeoff, the more I m inclined to believe that I ll take the risk. At least until the sunspot cycle gets to higher numbers, and 27Mhz, even at milliwatt power levels, become interesting. Thumbnail Views: Via Thumblicio.us SEARCH ANY STORY YOU HEAR ON THE PODCAST WiFi Survival It has been almost a year since I became aware of the risk of connecting to open WiFi points without the benefit of a VPN. Perhaps it was due to some of the travel that I had through O Hare over the course of a few points. Over the course of six or eight weeks, I was traveling through the same terminals and firing up the laptops. What I was seeing were more and more Free Access , Open WiFi , Consumer WiFi, Courtesy Acces Point and similar ID s showing up. Of course, as different sections of the official O Hare network opened up, more and more transient bad guys were putting up fake access points. I discovered Public VPN - and have been pretty happy with their service. It s a pleasure to use on the Mac with OSX - totally transparent. On the Toshiba box WiFi in general is a different story - but when I am able to get XP , the un-disconnectable Toshiba wireless manager, and the Intel chipset manager to quit fighting, the VPN is well worth the trouble. Or at least I feel better seeing the test site indicator turn from red to green. After all, in the wide open jungles of O Hare, you don t have to be able to outrun the bear, you just have to outrun the other guy, and make him a more attractive WiFi target. Public VPN fills the bill for $60 a year - and combined with a $200 limit Visa card used only for online logins and day passes, it makes open WiFi computing just a bit more sane. Android does not differentiate between the phone's core applications and third-party applications. They can all be built to have equal access to a phone's capabilities providing users with a broad spectrum of applications and services. With devices built on the Android Platform, users will be able to fully tailor the phone to their interests. They can swap out the phone's homescreen, the style of the dialer, or any of the applications. They can even instruct their phones to use their favorite photo viewing application to handle the viewing of all photos. Thumbnail Views: Via Thumblicio.us SEARCH ANY STORY YOU HEAR ON THE PODCAST Online Video and the Business Model The Penn State study on the impact of video availability does not offer much of a surprise to me. The conclusion of the study was that while online video might be bad for over the air broadcast TV, it is actually quite good for the networks - because of the opportunity to interact with viewers and fans on so many levels through their web site. I realize that they are almost separate worlds for most people - but if you take the time to look at shows from Monk, NCIS, or Eureka and then look at the very closely coupled web site content that expand the backstory, stars, and episodes - you can see the way that smart commercial programmers are moving with all haste. The microcosm world of podcasting has the same issues- discovery, development of a family of content services that are of interest to listeners or viewers, and then making sure that the fundamental dictate of digital media - consumption when, where and how at the convenience of the consumer is met. It looks to me that the first television network or producer to figure that out is going to have no problem making the transition. The fellows that are trying to upsell me on HD Radio or another tier of satellite service are not. Click to view videos submitted or recommended by other SDR podcast listeners. . . Thumbnail Views: Via Thumblicio.us SEARCH ANY STORY YOU HEAR ON THE PODCAST Electric Cars - A Mighty Big Bite The San Jose Mercury News highlights the story of the role that the tech industry could have in the refinement, manufacture and development of the next generation of electric automobiles. As the the theory goes, the California business model of technology, finance and innovation is just the sort of breakthrough thinking and expertise that can break the electric car bottleneck. The practice may turn out to be something different. For all of the faults of the auto business, it must be pointed out that the sheer size and scope of the operations of a GM or a Toyota producing tens of millions of vehicles per year is something that is pretty ambitious, even by Valley standards. One bit of rationality that has crept into the discussion is the realization that we probally need at least two sets of vehicles - small and economical city cars and bio-diesel / extended range vehicles for long haul or thinly populated areas. The only fly in the ointment ? Rationality does not rule. If it did, there would be an immediate mandate on any Federally funded project to require paved sidewalks on any new construction from here on out. Consider how many miles of sidewalk got paved in your neighborhood and just how much of your daily life is walkable. That s the challenge. And it is just as big as the challenges facing the electric car. Click to view videos submitted or recommended by other SDR podcast listeners. . . Today we learned the Gphone  is an alliance committed to building a new open platform that just might result in the phones of our dreams.  Bug Labs is releasing a build-your-own gadget system called BUG.  It starts with the BUGbase, a small, fully programmable Linux computer that can be expanded with a set of hardware add-ons and an open-source development platform.  I founded the Geek Intelligence Agency, so obviously I'm a James Bond fan.  The James Bond Ultimate Collector's Set  is about to be released and it includes all 21 films and 21 discs filled with extras.  Did you know Google Docs  now works in Safari?  Not many people seem to be talking about it.  If you ever wanted to predict the weather in your backyard, I've got the gadget for you!  I end the episode with an A/B look at the movie Serenity on our sub-$100 HD-DVD player.
