Building Trust Between IT and the Internal Customers: Suzanne Gordon, vice president of information technology and CIO at SASBuilding Trust Between IT and the Internal Customers: Suzanne Gordon, vice president of information technology and CIO at SAS
from Enterprise Leadership Podcasts for the CIO
October 03, 2008

During her climb up the corporate ladder at SAS, the world's largest privately held software company, Suzanne Gordon, SAS's vice president of information technology and CIO, developed an air-tight strategy for how IT could work in lockstep with internal SAS customers to reinforce the company's success. A roadblock stood in the way of selling her idea to management. Meanwhile, she decided to move out of IT and into the sales consulting side of SAS. It was here that she saw IT from the customer's perspective. In 2003 when the CIO position came opened at SAS, a company that provides 44,000 customers with analytics software, Gordon got the job. She now could turn her vision into a reality with her IT staff of more than 300 employees. In fact, that same year, Computerworld recognized Gordon's leadership talents by including her in the list of Premier 100 IT Executives for that year.
The Danger Within: Mitigating the Risk of Insider Threats to Business and GovernmentThe Danger Within: Mitigating the Risk of Insider Threats to Business and Government
from Deloitte Insights Podcast
September 30, 2008

We all know what happened when the Trojans brought a certain horse into their city. But many companies fail to appreciate, let alone take steps to deal with, the gravity of the threat posed by their own disgruntled employees. Classified and proprietary data, supply chain integrity, public confidence and financial assets are all at risk, but so too are lives — and national security. And technology is only making it easier for insiders to wreak havoc. The human resources (HR) department has to be alert to identifying individuals who are potential threats, and the culture of the workplace also comes into play. Employees can intervene to help coworkers who may be potential risks or report suspicious behavior. Putting new security measures in place may be part of the solution, but insider threats are a people problem — and only other people can solve it. Highlights: -How serious are insider threats, especially when compared to external threats? -How can HR identify individuals who pose potential inside risks before they’re hired? What are the indicators of a potential threat? -The very skills Generation Y brings to the table can also increase the potential for insider threats, especially where confidential information is concerned. Why is that? -What does an Employee Assistance Program or EAP entail, and how can it impact workplace behavior and performance? What it Takes to Succeed in Today's Marketplace:Ian Patterson, CIO and Executive Director of IT at ScottradeWhat it Takes to Succeed in Today's Marketplace:Ian Patterson, CIO and Executive Director of IT at Scottrade
from Enterprise Leadership Podcasts for the CIO
September 24, 2008

Since joining Scottrade as CIO in 2005, Ian Patterson has racked up a series of IT accolades for the stock brokerage firm, which manages $55.7 billion in assets. In both 2008 and 2007, Computerworld named him to its Premier 100 IT Leaders, a list of the country top IT executives. In 2007, under Patterson's leadership, Scottrade got named to the CIO magazine's CIO 100, an award that recognizes outstanding strategic IT leadership. Scottrade has also made it on the InformationWeek 500 list of the most innovative users of IT in the U.S. What has made Patterson so successful? As a former consultant with Deloitte, Patterson realized that many companies view the IT organization as an outsider, different from other business units. He says, "This never made any sense to me. Why should IT be treated any differently from marketing or finance?" At Scottrade, Patterson created an environment to converge IT into the overall corporate strategy to promote growth and profitability. He says, "Of course, a strategy without execution is just a dream. Our leadership meets regularly to review our five-year plan and to make any adjustments to it."
Delivering the Goods: How to Generate Added Value From IT Internal AuditDelivering the Goods: How to Generate Added Value From IT Internal Audit
from Deloitte Insights Podcast
September 23, 2008

Getting stuck in a ditch is no picnic, but if you have the tools to extricate yourself and don’t use them, you have only yourself to blame. Yet that’s the situation many companies find themselves in. They already have a resource available to help assess their strategic risks, control their spreadsheets, oversee data management, support sustainable environmental initiatives and ease the migration from one operating system to another. That resource is IT internal audit, but it’s not always invited to participate in these areas. Organizations that encourage IT internal audit to take on a leadership role in implementing strategic initiatives can generate a great deal of added value — and help keep them from ever getting stuck in a ditch again. Highlights: What do companies gain by making IT internal audit an integral component of their business strategy? How can IT internal audit help companies with their regulatory compliance issues? What about IFRS and the impact on IT systems? What is IT internal audit’s role in monitoring contracts for external relationships to make certain that costs are minimized and profits maximized? How can IT internal audit help companies effectively manage and secure data? Can IT internal audit play a leadership role in monitoring controls for Sarbanes-Oxley costs? Guests: Sarah Adams, director, Deloitte & Touche LLP Michael Juergens, principal, Deloitte & Touche LLP
ALDE Seminar on Arctic GovernanceALDE Seminar on Arctic Governance

September 18, 2008

Video summary of the ALDE Seminar Arctic Governance in a global world: is it time for an Arctic Charter? Event date: 07/05/08 16:30 to 19:00 Location: Room A3G3, European Parliament, Brussels More than Twenty Year's ago, Gorbachev expressed that the Arctic States should form a genuine zone of peace and fruitful co-operation in the far north. Over that period several key issues - pollution, climate change leading to the opening of hitherto closed seaways, resource use, sustainability, security of energy supply, fish stocks - have emerged which have focussed attention on the High North. With this background in mind the question which needs answering is whether the current governance structures in the High North are sufficient to deal with these challenges. Questions which need answering are e.g. Could the Arctic Council be overhauled so as to provide the vehicle for improved Artic collaboration? Might there be the opportunity to consider a binding Arctic Charter? In view of these aspects, an ALDE seminar with elected representatives from the Arctic, academics, scientists and other experts could provide a thorough contribution to the debate. ----------------------------------------------- MEP's Concerned: Diana Wallis For more information Krings Thomas - Tel: +32 2 284 32 42 On ALDE Website: http://www.alde.eu/index.php?id=42&no_cache=1&tx_ttnews[tt_news]=9348 [ALDEEVENTS] [Events] [Seminar] [Language EN original]Author: ALDEADLE Tags: ALDEADLE ALDE ADLE ALDEEVENTS ALEV EVENTS Seminar VIDEO SUMMARY EPPE BXL Diana Wallis Arctic Governance in global world Agriculture Posted: 18 September 2008 Rating: 0.0 Votes: 0
TAKING A BOTTOM-LINE APPROACH FOR IT:Toby Redshaw, Global CIO of Aviva GroupTAKING A BOTTOM-LINE APPROACH FOR IT:Toby Redshaw, Global CIO of Aviva Group
from Enterprise Leadership Podcasts for the CIO
September 09, 2008

In 2007, Andrew Moss, the former chief financial officer at Lloyds, became the chief executive officer of Aviva Plc, the world's fifth largest insurance group and the largest insurance company in the U.K. He immediately devised a strategy to drive 20 percent growth across Aviva's three lines of business: long-term savings, fund management, and general insurance. The company manages about $800 billion for about 45 million customers. Moss's strategy includes transforming the business by streamlining costs and making sure that all 57,000 employees work toward the goal of providing better value to customers. Since becoming global CIO of the Aviva Group in January 2008, Toby Redshaw has had no problem incorporating Moss's strategy into how IT operates across the three lines of business. Redshaw says that his role is to make sure IT operates at the right pace, with the right resources, and with the right talent. He also takes a bottom line approach to IT by challenging his front-line IT managers to ask their financial counterparts how specific IT projects relate back to the profit & loss statement. Redshaw says the conenction between IT and the company's bottom line is the biggest gap that IT has with the business. Getting and keeping customers or customer turns shows up on the bottom line. IT managers need to understand what they can be doing to improve this metric, and thus the bottom line."
The ABCs of Litigation Document Review: How to Build a Plan to Stay Ahead of the GameThe ABCs of Litigation Document Review: How to Build a Plan to Stay Ahead of the Game
from Deloitte Insights Podcast
August 19, 2008

Imagine that you’re building a road and you come up against a mountain. Whether you drill through the mountain or build around it depends on what tools you have at your disposal. The same holds true when sorting through the mountains of paperwork a company is required to produce for litigation or an investigation. Failure to know what tools are available and when to use them can expose a company to substantial sanctions even before the company gets its day in court. There’s more than one way to build a road, but you’d better be sure it gets to the destination you want. Highlights: • Electronic Data Discovery, also known as EDD or E-Discovery, is changing the way traditional document reviews have been done. What are some of the general challenges involved in performing a document review in today’s environment? • Document review costs often eat up a huge chunk of a litigation budget. Why is this process so expensive? • What are some ways companies can reduce costs by streamlining the document review process, without jeopardizing compliance? What’s an example of an efficient mix between manual and automated tools? • What are some safeguards companies may be able to use to prevent a “brain-drain” of sensitive data being leaked to outsiders? Guests: Diane Barrasso, principal, Forensic & Dispute Services, Deloitte Financial Advisory Services LLP John DiMatteo, partner, Wilkie Farr & Gallagher LLP

Geneva, June 2008. The pre-conference programme of the 2008 EADI General conference closed with the Dudley Series public lecture by Tariq Banuri. He presented a view of the world as one country. He started his premise with the view that if the world were a country it would be considered an unstable state. If we wanted to seek the skills to formulate global policy, we would be best served by finding those with experience in developing countries, as the Earthland as he called it would be a developing country.

Iran: Judicial Investigator Publically Accuses Ayatollahs of CorruptionIran: Judicial Investigator Publically Accuses Ayatollahs of Corruption
from Global Voices Online » Video
June 09, 2008

A member of Iran s Judicial Inquiry and Review Commission, Abbas Palizdar, created a scandal this month by accusing several top clerics and influential members of the Islamic Republic of corruption in a speech a Booali University in Hamadan. He offered details of many illegal business deals and criminal offences, and accused several of Iran s leading political figures, including influential Ayatollahs, such as former president and chairman of the Assembly of Experts, Hashemi Rafsanjani, the Interim Friday Prayer Leader of Tehran, Emami Kashani, and the head of the Imam Reza Shrine Foundation, Ayatollah Vaez Tabbasi, of illegally accumulating hundreds of millions of dollars. Several Iranian bloggers published parts of his speech and shared their opinions on this exceptional event in the Islamic Republic. After the controversial speech, the university s Islamic Society of Students was allegedly shut down. The Mano Shoma blog recounts [fa] that Abbas Palizdar named several “corrupt influential personalities” in Hamadan: Ayatollah Emami Kashani came and said he wants to register an institution for handicapped people because he has a handicapped child, and he wants his own child be in this institution. Then he came back and said he needs financial support for this institute, and he wants a stone mine in the Fars province. It is the best mine in the world. Then he came and said that mine is not enough, and he took another one in Zanjan. At present he has four different mines supporting his institute for disabled people. There were many more examples. Palizar described how Ayatollah Yazdi, the former head of the Judiciary was allowed to purchase the Dena Tyre factory in order to support a new law faculty for women in Qom. The factory was valued at 600 million dollars, but he was allowed to acquire it for only 10 million dollars. The cleric then said he could only pay 20 per cent in cash, and proceeded to sell the factory on the Iranian stock market at a massive profit. Azarmehr links to a video of Abbas Palizdar delivering the speech on the Internet Archive and translates the key points to English: During the question time, Palizdar is asked why he has not talked about the corruption by the Rafsnjani clan, is it because he fears the power of Rafsanjanis? Palizar replies that there is so much abuse of power by Rafsnajanis that he would need an entire meeting dedicated to this subject According to Palizdar, Ayatollah Rafsanjani has major financial interests in an oil company in Canada, and also the touristic island, Kish. He also said there is video evidence of Rafsanjani s son, Mehdi, sexually exploiting his female employees. Dilemma of the Islamic Republic Abdollah Shabazi an Islamist historian says [fa] that owners of the revolution , according to the definition of the Islamic Republic leadership, face a dilemma between either: the status quo, continuing the present situation and making Iran a second Pakistan, or renewing the Islamic Republic. There is no third option. The choice is either to accept institutionalised corruption, or fight against it to realise the goals of late Ayathollah Khomeini, the leader of the Islamic Revolution. Why now? Mahameh Khobim wonders [fa] about the timing of such a surprising revelation. Why? And why now? The blogger speculates that a group of the conservative right must be targeted to be disappeared. Hassan Agha draws parallels [fa] between what is going on in Iran now and at the end of the Shah s regime: inflation, unemployment and these kinds of political revelations.

June 03, 2008

Jeffrey has a powerful conversation with Steve McIntosh, a first generation American, born to an English mother and Australian father. His parents divorced in 1962 when he was two years old, after which he lived with his mother as an only child, growing up in Los Angeles. In 1984 he graduated from the University of Southern California business school and later the University of Virginia Law School where he served as articles editor of the Virginia Law Review. After becoming a member of the California Bar in 1987, he worked for California’s biggest law firm, Pillsbury, Madison natural lifestyle products , featuring the famous Zen Alarm Clock, which wakes users gradually with a series of acoustic chimes. All Now & Zen products have been conceived and designed by McIntosh, with a brand aesthetic that combines the harmonic proportions of sacred geometry with motifs from traditional Japanese culture. The company’s mission is to provide products that remind people that they live in the presence of the sacred, however they may define it. As a result of his focus on progressive spirituality and cultural evolution, in the late 1990s McIntosh became involved in the integral movement. In 2000 he was invited to join leading integral author Ken Wilber’s Integral Institute, where he served in both the Integral Art branch and the Integral Business branch. Steve left the Integral Institute on good terms in 2002 in order to establish himself as an independent voice in the integral movement. This led to the 2007 publication of his book Integral Consciousness and the Future of Evolution: How the Integral World view Is Transforming Politics, Culture and Spirituality. In addition to his book, Steve also appears in the DVD interview: The Evolution of Consciousness, and is the author of a variety of scholarly articles on integral philosophy and politics. What Is Enlightenment? Magazine has featured numerous interviews of McIntosh, with a special emphasis on his political views. He has also been interviewed by New Dimensions Radio, the Institute of Noetic Sciences, and other progressive media. In 2004, his focus on the application of integral philosophy to politics led him to found The Project for Integral World Federation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to cultural and political evolution. The organization’s primary activity is the hosting and promotion of the on-line petition: A Declaration of the Value of Global Governance. This declaration, modeled after Thomas Jefferson’s 1776 Declaration of Independence for the United States, seeks to raise consciousness about the benefits of a future system of limited, democratic, federal, integral world government. I have known Steve for 15 years and I am very happy that we could have this scintillating conversation about his passion to provide greater definition to the trends in consciousness that are shaping our world and are bringing greater understanding to the fascinating evolution of human consciousness on earth.
