UNICEF: Thousands of schools forced to close in DR Congo

NEW YORK, USA, 21 November 2008 Fighting in the North Kivu province of eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo has caused massive disruptions in schooling for hundreds of thousands of children. Throughout the province, thousands of schools are closed. Many schools are now occupied by displaced people. UNICEF estimates that 60 per cent of the newly displaced people are children. Since late August, over 250,000 people have fled conflict, bringing the total number of displaced in the province to over 1 million. In the last few days, rebel soldiers have pulled back their positions in North Kivu, but humanitarian access is still limited. UNICEF: A day on the ground in crisis-stricken DR Congo

UNICEF: A day on the ground in crisis-stricken DR Congo

from mrpregnant on November 18, 2008

UNICEF Communications Specialist Jaya Murthy has been on the ground throughout the latest round of violence and displacement in eastern DR Congo. Here, he reports on a day spent among the displaced. KIBATI CAMP, Democratic Republic of the Congo, 18 November 2008 In the last two weeks, well over 100,000 people have fled their homes due to fighting and insecurity in eastern DR Congo. Over 35,000 are on the move as I write. In the last two and a half months, around 250,000 people have fled their homes. Some 1.1 million people in North Kivu or 20 per cent of the provinces population are now in displacement. We spent a day last week in the Kibati settlement for displaced persons, 9 km north of Goma, the provincial capital. Over 60,000 people have settled here since fighting intensified. Thousands of them have fled multiple times. Fleeing from conflict has become 'normal' in their lives. NICEF and our partners are carrying out emergency measles and polio vaccinations for 13,000 children. Measles is a contagious disease that spreads very quickly when people are on the move. Hundreds of childrens lives are at risk if it is not immediately contained. To read the full story, visit: http://www.unicef.org/infobycountry/drcongo_46428.html

UNICEF: Aid slowly reaching displaced in DR Congo

UNICEF: Aid slowly reaching displaced in DR Congo

from mrpregnant on November 06, 2008
Duration: 121
NEW YORK, USA, 3 November, 2008 After several days of uncertainty, aid is slowly beginning to reach some displaced people in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo's North Kivu province. Hundreds of thousands more still await assistance. Over the last two months, more than 250,000 people have been forced to flee fighting between the Congolese army and a rebel group nearly 100,000 of them in the last four days. A fragile cease-fire has allowed a handful of aid trucks to bring supplies to at least one camp, and humanitarian groups are performing rapid assessments in preparation for a massive aid response. At one site where 50,000 people sought refuge from the recent fighting, UNICEF and its partners were able to ship in water, a weeks worth of medical supplies and about 15,000 biscuits for children. According to UNICEF Communications Specialist Jaya Murthy in Goma, the distribution of food among the displaced nearly caused a riot. Many havent eaten for days. UNICEF: Continuing violence hampers aid efforts in DR Congo

UNICEF: Continuing violence hampers aid efforts in DR Congo

from mrpregnant on November 06, 2008
Duration: 145
NEW YORK, USA, 6 November 2008 Continued violence in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo is seriously hampering humanitarian agencies from reaching more than 1 million displaced people in the region. In spite of a rebel ceasefire, fighting flared up again in North Kivu province over the last two days between government troops, their allied militias and the rebels. More than 250,000 people have been forced to flee fighting that began in late August more than 100,000 of them in the last six days. In spite of the fighting, UNICEF and other humanitarian groups are preparing a massive aid response to those displaced by conflict. Earlier this week, at one site where 50,000 people sought refuge from the recent fighting, UNICEF and its partners were able to ship in water, a week's worth of medical supplies and about 15,000 biscuits for children. UNICEF: Aid on hold in DR Congo as crisis worsens

UNICEF: Aid on hold in DR Congo as crisis worsens

from mrpregnant on November 02, 2008
Duration: 150
GOMA, Democratic Republic of the Congo, 30 October 2008 In eastern DR Congos North Kivu province, war rages on between government forces and rebels. Over the last six weeks alone, more than 250,000 people have been forced to flee fighting, bringing the total number of displaced people in the province to over 1 million. Were now starting to see internally displaced people who have been displaced for the second, third, fourth and even fifth time, said UNICEF Communications Specialist in Goma, Jaya Murthy. Nearly 20 per cent of the population of North Kivu is now displaced. However, the current violence has forced aid organizations to suspend their humanitarian activities temporarily throughout most of the province. Because of the insecurity, humanitarian access is virtually zero right now, said Mr. Murthy. We just cant get to the places where we need to get to assist these people who are truly desperate in need of assistance.
