Psychiatry is different from psychology in that psychiatry is a branch of medicine aimed at treating mental illness whereas psychology is the science that studies the mental aspects of motivation and behavior. Both words, however, come from a common Greek root psyche. In ancient Greece psyche referred that ethereal aspect of ourselves that isn’t our physical self. And also more literally to our breath, needed for life.  By extension, this word for the fluttery breath of life became the Greek word for butterfly. In Greek mythology Psyche is also the name of a most beautiful mortal young woman with whom the young god Cupid falls in love. Cupid being the god of love this has a nice sort of “love of life” tone to it. The cover of my book Carnal Knowledge has two images of the human body on it; one male, one female. The male is Bacchus. The female is that beautiful Greek Psyche. Her image is actually a detail from a painting called The Awakening of Psyche by Guillaume Seignac. It isn t shown in the detail on the book but here s a link to a more complete image where you can see that the lovely Psyche actually has butterfly wings sprouting out of her back. Returning to our word of the day, psyche meaning “soul” or “spirit” came into English in the 17th century during the renaissance when the most scholarly things always had something Latin or Greek about them. The word psychology also appeared in English in the 17th century but psychiatry waited another hundred years before it appeared in print—this because there wasn’t much thought of curing crazy people before that, mostly they were locked up in asylums. The ending of the word psychiatry is also from Greek and means “healing” whereas the end of psychology is from the Greek word logos which literally means “word”—which is why a logophile is a word lover. But logos also has to it the sense of “to speak,” “discuss” and “reason.” So the literal meaning of psychiatry is spirit healing. Breaking down psychology into its parts we get spirit understanding.

Episode #48. Sloth. It's not all about the TV. Making war against sloth is of the greatest importance. Going to the big guns... St. Thomas! Sloth is a sluggishness of the mind and sorrow over doing something for God's sake. Refusal to do the good that God wants us to do. What we are to do is dependent upon our state of life. It is not about being busy all the time. In fact, you can be slothful in your busyness. Sloth is difficult to shake. A vice that rejects that which eliminates vice. Capital sin. Sin which causes other sins. Putting God on hold. Fear of God as a cause of sloth. Trying to "check the box." An artful, refined sloth. Never at rest. Never at peace. Sloth begins from ingratitude. God gradually withdraws his graces from those who neglect them. Combating sloth involves fighting your enemies one at a time and taking small battles. Expect challenges and setbacks. The Cross is central to Christanity. When God calls, fon't put him off until later because... there may not be a "later." How to know if your day has been profitable. Forgiveness does not mean the removal of consequences. Robe envy.

Episode #47. Lost luggage. Fighting impurity. Special tactics. Greater resolution. Sin against our own selves. Disunity with God through unity with something else. Sin of a different quality. Dangers of over familiarity. The phases of temptation: before, during and after. Avoid near occasions of sin. Don't presume on your own strength. Examination of conscience. Attacking the vice you struggle with the most. Danger is greatest where the appearance of evil is the least. Listen to your conscience as you read this text. Once passions are inflamed, not even the fear of the flames of hell will will be able to master the fury of the passions in your heart. Don't go there. Weak and pampered body. Weak and pampered soul. Let this sin go. Do not continue to reflect upon them. Reflect upon your savior, and do not exert yourself on driving the sin away. Mourning the distance we place between ourselves and God.

What to do when we recognize attachments, and detachment in our state in life.

The last brownie, pizza, fishing rods and an ipod...

What is detachment and why is it important? Discussion on the nature of detachment and what detachment is not. Detachment is not denying all sense pleasure, nor is it a feeling or inflicting pain on one's self for its own sake. Attachment is seeking pleasure for its own sake, rather than having the pleasure oriented toward God.

Sin is an attachment. It is taking something and using it in a disordered way and making it (and/or yourself) an idol.
