Palin Palin all the time, and never a peep of complaint. That's the long and short of the news cycle these past few day but there are just a few stories on which I'd like to see some follow up. Take the one about Peter W. Galbraith, a former United States ambassador who advocated tirelessly for Kurdish independence. Galbraith wrote scores of op-ed pieces for the New York Times and other outlets, while never disclosing to readers - or apparently, to editors -- that he stood to benefit, financially, from Kurdish independence. Now it turns out he had ties to a Norwegian oil company that scored an enormous stake in at least one of Kurdistan's oil fields -- a stake made possible by independence -- and worth something like $100 million to Galbraith. That's eyebrow-raising stuff. For your other eyebrow, how about the story about Afghanistan, heroin and the CIA. Is it Vietnam redux? Just maybe. Ahmed Wali Karzai, the brother of the Afghan president, apparently gets regular payments from the CIA and has for much of the past eight years. According to current and former American officials, the CIA pays Karzai for a variety of services, including helping to recruit an Afghan paramilitaries and stationing special forces. The hitch -- Karzai's long accused of being one of the country's chief narcotics dealers and Afghan opium sales are through the roof. If it sounds familiar, it should -- while the CIA operated in Vietnam, CIA assets controlled the world's heroin trade. Now it's Afghanistan. The story that hung around for a day or two, then poof. It's disappeared. Leave your news to the cable pundit shows and Palin's an easy, constant diet. We participated ourselves, so no one's innocent, but think you can leave reporting to fend for itself? You can't. This week it's Palin, last week it was Murdoch. Sitting for a television interview with Sky News Australia, he agreed with the claim made by Glenn Beck that President Obama (aka "this guy") was a "racist" with a "deep-seated hatred for white people." That's just out there, too.... But now back to Palin's book. Derivatives and credit default swaps might not sound as scary as death panels, but they're responsible, at least in part, for our economic meltdown. The Dow might be back up, but most of the country is still suffering from the aftereffects of the bankers' greed. The Showdown in Chicago protests this week attempted to attract attention to the conference, where bankers attended panels with titles like "Strategies for Acquiring Troubled Banks," "NonInterest Income," and "Unwinding Government Intervention," along with a keynote speech by Newt Gingrich.Joining us to discuss whether the American Dream should apply just to rich bankers or to the rest of us are Matt Taibbi, journalist with Rolling Stone and author of The Great Derangement: A Terrifying True Story of War, Politics, and Religion , George Goehl, executive director of National People's Action, Christina Clausen, International Representative, United Food &

GRITtv: The F Word: Palin's Pet Hoffman Has Taliban Ties

One week before Election Day, the special election to fill a vacant House seat in New York?s North Country is heating up. It's a three-way split, pitting a Republican, a Democrat, and a Conservative against one another. It's close. And the conservative on the ticket has the kind of support the Democrat running against him must have dreamed of. Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman has already received the backing of Sarah Palin, Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh and the anti-public-spending Club for Growth. On Monday he was endorsed by Dana Rohrabacher, the Orange County, California, Republican who began his career as a speechwriter for President Reagan. Said Rohrabacher ?We don?t need Tweedle-Dum or Tweedle-Dee, we need Hoffman. He?s not afraid to stand up and speak the truth,? Like Palin, Beck, Limbaugh et al, Rohrabacher's of the belief that if Hoffman wins, it will send a message to the GOP establishment that they should run hardliners in 2010 and pitch to the Tea Party crowd on health care, government and everything else. It's a great endorsement -- as far as Hoffman's opponents are concerned. As special assistant to Ronald Reagan, Rohrabacher played a key role in the late 1980s getting money and arms to Muslim extremists in Afghanistan. Throughout the 90s, he lobbied shamelessly for the repressive Taliban. A November/December 1996 article in Washington Report on Middle East Affairs said, "The potential rise of power of the Taliban does not alarm Rohrabacher" because the congressman believes the "Taliban could provide stability in an area where chaos was creating a real threat to the U.S." Nice. In April 2001, Rohrabacher met privately in Qatar with the Taliban's foreign minister, then seeking increased aid for his country. Rohrabacher's railed against the evil Taliban since, but still. Having a Taliban funder joining the rogue's gallery backing the other guy has got to make it easier for the Democrat, lawyer Bill Owens. If he ekes out a victory amid the Republican infighting he'll be the first Democrat to win that district in 140 years.

A brave man walks through the teabagger protest on the National Mall in Washington, DC, with a large sign that reads Public Option Now . If not for the cops that escorted him through the crowd, they probably would have eaten him alive.

The muted response to Van Jones resignation says volumes about where progressives stand in the Obama administration and whether so-called outsiders have a role to play in shaping the administration s policies. Judging by just how quickly the administration surrendered to Glenn Beck s assault Jones wasn t really worth defending. What does that say about his ideas?A recent story in AlterNet explores some of the ties between Astroturf groups and the FOX news campaign. Jane Hamsher at Firedoglake offers her take on why liberal institutions have distanced themselves from the whole affair. So what s really at stake? And what does the Van Jones story reveal about American politics?Ludovic Blain, Project Manager of Closing the Racial Wealth Gap Initiative, Rory O Connor, co-founder of Globalvision and the author of Shock Jocks: Hate Speech and Talk Radio , Tim Wise, the author of Between Barack and a Hard Place: Racism and White Denial in the Age of Obama , and Jane Hamsher, the founder of Firedoglake discuss the recent developments and what their impact might be.Then, Elmar Wigand, a German labor organizer, on European labor struggles and how the IWW has managed to organize the staff at Compass Group, a global catering company and the 20th largest employer in the world. They aren t exactly a household name but they have roots here in the United States as well. Finally, the Huffington Post Investigative Fund on the healthcare crisis in rural Virginia. A free clinic last month drew thousands of people seeking care. Even if healthcare reform is achieved this year, they say, millions will be left without insurance by the end of the decade. Another argument for single payer? Thanks to the Real News Network, Brave New Films and Bernie Sanders, and Rev. Billy for video in tonight s show.
