Thanksgiving is about more than turkeys and football. It's a day dedicated to our Lord and Creator. As we approach the holiday this year, let's remember and acknowledge Him, and His role in our national blessings. http://www.gnmagazine.org/video/11252009-thanksgiving-blessings.htm

ROCKOLLECTIONS: GETTING HOME FOR THANKSGIVING: BOATS PT.3

ROCKOLLECTIONS: GETTING HOME FOR THANKSGIVING: BOATS PT.3

from WLSO.FM on November 24, 2009
Duration: 1635
These next 2 chapters can be listened to either BEFORE or AFTER Thanksgiving. So no need to take time away from your turkey preparation, just listen at your leisure. I open this one in a similar fashion to Part One, but from across the Atlantic. Did you know George Washington declared a Day Of Thanksgiving in 1789, but my man Thomas Jefferson dismissed it? What the hell was he thinking, lol? A women s magazine editor named Sarah Hale felt we should have one though, and wrote editorials and letters to presidents, governors and other influential people for FORTY YEARS, until President Lincoln proclaimed a National Day Of Thanksgiving in 1863. In 1941, Congress made it a Holiday- the 4th Thursday in November. In this episode, songs about Ships- including one co-written by David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Paul Kantner (Kantner for years couldn t collect on it because of contractual obligations- don t you love those?). Then I will begin a collection of songs for people heading for the dock, port or harbor, and those who are there waiting for them. Starting with another contrast- this time between some old, poetic Dylan and the Hollies. I will continue with that sub-topic in our final, concluding entry with a varied selection of songs you should enjoy. Getting closer and closer to Turkey Time! Mike

A.J. Jacobs, THE GUINEA PIG DIARIES author: Mr. Media Interview

A.J. Jacobs, THE GUINEA PIG DIARIES author: Mr. Media Interview

from Mr. Media on September 09, 2009
Duration: 0
A.J. Jacobs I’m a little worried about A.J. Jacobs. His latest book, The Guinea Pig Diaries: My Life as an Experiment, takes the social tests he put himself through in previous books such as The Know-It-All—in which he read the entire encyclopedia—and The Year of Living Biblically—in which he followed every single rule of the Bible—and reveals a funny, introspective man who may be in danger of becoming a caricature of himself. The Guinea Pig Diaries compiles some of his most brilliant experiments for Esquire magazine, where he is an editor at large, and adds in several new trials. It’s all good, meaty reading, but I’m starting to wince more than laugh at A.J.’s escapades. Where is the line for a man who once outsourced his life to India but more recently spent a month being whipped—figuratively, I think—by his wife? And how much is too much information for readers about a writer’s personal life? AUDIO EXCERPT: "I found this device on the Internet that I never knew existed: a chastity belt for men. If she's going to be in control of my life, it would be interesting if she could also control my private parts. So I did order one of those for her and I did strap it on for a couple days..."Don’t get me wrong. I’m a big fan of A.J.’s work—and have been for a long time. If I could have another writer’s career, I’d admit to wanting his. But I do wonder, honestly, if it might not be time for him to point that giant, sensitive brain of his in a different creative direction for a while. I’m curious to see if he agrees. HMHS Remembering Radio: Mr. President - George Washington

HMHS Remembering Radio: Mr. President - George Washington

from recent posts - blip.tv (beta) on August 24, 2009
Duration: 1791
Mr. President was a radio series that ran from 1947 to 1953 and starred Edward Arnold as a different U.S. president each week. The episodes focused on an event in the life of a particular President. A research staff made certain that the stories were accurate, but the script was constructed in such a way that the identity of the President was not revealed until the very end of the show. The challenge was to guess which President was being presented. This episode is about George Washington, but we propose that parents play this for their children without revealing who it is about and see if they can identify which President is featured.
