Reconstructing Historical Climate From Tree Rings and Clam Shells

from KUOW News Podcast on July 31, 2009
Duration: 0
Heat wave records abound this week. But there's a caveat. Northwest weather records don't date back very far, relatively speaking. They're spotty prior to the 1940's. Now an Oregon State University researcher is having success using long lived trees and sea creatures to lengthen our climate record.

Finding Flavor Notes in Food

Finding Flavor Notes in Food

from KUOW Presents Podcast on July 01, 2009
Duration: 0
Wine can have flavor notes like leather or vanilla or minerals. Local, seasonal food can also have distinct notes of flavor. And those notes can lead a cook to come up with unexpected food combinations. That's how the chef at Seattle's Canlis restaurant develops his specials. Jason Franey moved here last December and has since discovered that the sky is the limit when it comes to flavor in the Northwest. Jason talks with KUOW's Megan Sukys about how to identify flavor notes and a few creative combinations he's developed like watermelon and geoduck.

Clam Wars

Clam Wars

from Specials by KUOW Podcast on September 25, 2008
Duration: 0
Geoducks are a native Northwest species, and are plentiful in Puget Sound. The huge clams may not be a staple of local diets, but Asians pay top dollar for them. In China, geoducks are steamed or sauteed, in Japan they are made into sashimi. Local shellfish companies are rushing to expand geoduck production to take advantage of the Asian market. But homeowners along the coast are trying to stop them. They argue that geoduck aquaculture is both unsightly and ecologically damaging. Shellfish companies respond that geoducks don't hurt the environment, they actually help by filtering water. So who is right? The dispute has become so heated that teams of scientists are now embarking on a multi year study to put the issue to rest.

Mother Internet and her children partied this week. Listen in. If you ve been pining away for the good ol days of Etcetera (read: studio packed with way too many people and bordering on hysterical chaos), then this show is for you. The three-legged-stool of podcasting was joined by Nino (yeah, that Nino) along with Forwarding Andrew and Silent Roger for a rockin good time. We also talked with Professor Melissa-Mrs. Geoduck Joe from Watching the Directors. Feminist film theory and the proper role of men in the overall order of things were among the talking points. Programming note: The show will now be streamed live as we record on Tuesdays at 4 PM ET.
