BAKOKO's Alastair Townsend participated in Pecha Kucha Vol. 64 held at SuperDeluxe, Tokyo on July 29th 2009. BAKOKO is a international design practice based in Tokyo, Japan, founded by architects Alastair Townsend and Kayoko Ohtsuki. Townsend presented the design and construction of the Cutty Sark Pavilion (the world's first building to have been realized using Bentley's parametric design software, Generative Components). The talk goes on to briefly present recent projects including Acacia Arboricola Synthetica (a synthetic tree house), a restaurant on the water (on top of a skyscraper), the Shi Shi O Doshi rain shelter, and the Matuso Mansion. for more: bakoko.jp Pecha Kucha Night, devised by Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham (Klein Dytham architecture), was conceived in 2003 as a place for young designers to meet, network, and show their work in public. The key to Pecha Kucha Night is its patented system for avoiding this fate. Each presenter is allowed 20 images, each shown for 20 seconds each giving 6 minutes 40 seconds of fame before the next presenter is up. This keeps presentations concise, the interest level up, and gives more people the chance to show. for more: pecha-kucha.org

This is a 3 minute excerpt of a 60 minute generative art video. It was created using genetic software coded by the artist. The software system used is called GA1 and is described in a paper that was presented at the Generative Art Conference in Milan Italy in 2000. More information is available at: http://philipgalanter.com. This piece is intended for installation using floor to ceiling projection and high fidelity sound. This online rendering has reduced resolution and fidelity.

Digital Creatures #1 - Ant Concert

A fun work I did recently. Little Ants, busy working together, randomly moving the notes around a bar of music whilst it is playing. This might become the first in a set of works, looking at using the movement of, and interaction between digital creatures to create musical works. Here is a screen-captured movie of what it looks like...

part of a performance by Jasch - generative audio and video soundscapes to immerse yourself in sunday 01/10/2006, Electrofringe 2006, Newcastle, Australia http://www.thisisnotart.org/http://www.thisisnotart.org/Members/ben/jasch-codespace/ http://www.jasch.ch/ Codespace integrates realtime drawing and motion-images with electronic sounds that evoke an abstract place where organical and crystalline shapes pulsate and flow. Generative (rule-based) processes or algorithms and realtime action by the artist are applied to basic shapes which in conjuction with finely graded colours comprise a rich palette of textures and shapes. empty dark space is inhabited by fast moving abstract shapes, structures with an architectural quality develop over extended periods of time. The piece evolves from dark and minimalist atmospheres to abstract densities, like a digital painting performed before the viewer s eyes. Memory of the images accumulates, obtaining qualities like a painting or etching. Reduction and concentration of elements helps to maintain the crucial focus, build the tension and give insights into the enigmatic and invisible world built of code.
