Marc Powell: Community Building Through Food Hacking
from Ryan Is Hungry July 13, 2007
QuickTime | Flash | iPod Marc Powell is an anarchist, hacker chef who opens his kitchen up to strangers and friends every Thursday to cook up some amazing, hacked food creations. Attending a food hacking supper club is a mind expanding experience that teaches folks not to be afraid of experimenting with your cuisine. You can t cook wrong if you have the right friends to help you out! During this particular five course meal, we had, among many things, the most amazing savory mushroom soup, fava bean soufflé, candied bacon wrapped scallops and a citrus meringue your grandma would have been proud of. The synchronicity of friends- old and new, of food knowledge- a lot or a little, made this one of the most unique food and friendship building experiences we ve ever had. Marc fully believes that sharing knowledge through experimentation and cooking truly is revolutionary social networking. We would have to agree. Thanks Marc! Green Blogging: Green LA Girl
from Ryan Is Hungry June 14, 2007
Siel aka Green LA Girl, has been blogging about her personal experiences with green since 2005. Using her blog as a journal, a conduit and a clearinghouse for practical green information and advice, she urges her fellow Los Angelites (and beyond) to think critically about the choices they have for their lives. Siel explains that writing in the first person helps her to distribute information that she s learned in a non-obtrusive or judgmental way. We ve also found that this is particularly important when exploring new concepts or ways of living that might seem a bit strange at first to a new comer. It s so much more appealing to encourage and teach rather than berate and judge! Thanks Siel! ACCRC: James Burgett- Saving Computers from the Landfill
from Ryan Is Hungry May 04, 2007
James Burgett founded the ACCRC, Alameda County Computer Resource Center, to essentially make money off of equipment that other people thought was obsolete garbage. Thirteen years later he s reformatted, refurbished and donated thousands of computers to folks who might not ever have the chance to own one. The ACCRC offers workshops on how to refurbish and reuse junked equipment and how to install and use the open source OS Ubuntu Linux which is free for all. Saving valuable equipment from the landfill, James explains, is not exactly profitable for the California Electronics Recycling Initiative, which encourages recyclers to mine and grind parts rather than refurb for reuse. Thanks for the tour James! Thanks to Alex and Rudy at Monkeybrains.net for telling us about ACCRC! Transit Geek: Darius Robert, CEO DartCar.com
from Ryan Is Hungry March 21, 2007
We first met Darius through the Coworking experiment at The Hat Factory. Spending even a few minutes with Mr. Roberts and you will surely find out that his passion is transit. How can mass transit be more efficient? How can cities, metropolitan areas and even small towns make better use of the resources that already exist? What technologies will be up and coming to help transit in the US stay afloat in an age of ever increasing oil prices? Darius is currently starting up a car share program through DartCar.com, a site dedicated to helping people share the resources that exist all around them. Visit Darius blog for a glance into his transit crazed mind. Runtime- 4:40 Technorati Tags: ride share, dartcar, darius roberts, san francisco, transit, green, ryanishungry

Solar Las Vegas: Center for Energy Research
from Ryan Is Hungry March 07, 2007
Las Vegas is a pretty sunny place, right? So why isn t the whole city powered through solar energy? You could ask this question for a lot of places in the world. The answer we re hearing more and more is that alternative energy is not just about being good, but being politically advantageous and having the money for it. Bob Boehm from The University of Nevada s Center for Energy Research explains the ups and downs of trying to implement alternative energy as a primary source of power. He also shows us some of the mind blowing technology (our favorite being sun captured through fiber optics for lighting!) that they re testing at the CER. Thanks Bob!
