OLPC group being called out for Missing Shipment ShenanigansOLPC group being called out for Missing Shipment Shenanigans
from News Cast Live, formerly Mike Thinks News
July 07, 2008

(click HERE to see the posting that prompted my to write this) It seems like a very very long time ago that I donated $50 towards the purchase of an OLPC. You probably never heard that I made this donation, because it was just that, a donation not a ploy for publicity, link love or anything other than money for a good cause. I only make the announcement here now because I am feeling a few steps past ticked off. you see, the people over at OLPC have, from all I can tell, have failed to act in good faith , and have apparently snubbed one of the most trusted and upstanding citizens in the new media space, Todd Cochran, and in the process, hosed over the many dozens of people who donated like myself. Full disclosure here, Todd Cochran is the CEO of Raw Voice , and its subsidiary companies Blubrry.com, and TechPodcast.com, and I do have an affiliation with Blubrry.com I can only imagine his frustration and embarrassment at being put in a position where he accepted donations for a charitable cause, and now must explain why, through no fault of his own the donations did not produce the promised result. Those of you who listen to my show on a regular basis know that I do enjoy going off on a rant every now and again, which is why I am writing this post free of hyperbole and wild accusations, this is a very serious issue. As a member of the Podcasting community, as a member of Blubrry, and as a member of the Geek News Central Ohana, I am very disappointed with the OLPC groups handling of this entire situation. I post this here in the hopes of helping other avoid a similar disappointment. Mike James Copyright 2008 News Cast Live, formerly Mike Thinks News. all rights reserved. Disclaimer: I have one of these devices that I am testing at this time. Vudu is one of the most unique products I have had exposure to in a long time. Vudu allows you to rent movies like you would on Pay Per View. Vudu also allows you to actually buy the movie and store on its internal hard drive. This box delivers 1000's of videos new and old. The releases of videos are on a very similar time table as standard pay per view. Since this interview the vudu box price has been reduced to $295.00 which is a much better price than the old price. I have been watching the OQO for over a year now and their Ultra Mobile PC's are some of the best out their in the market today. So when I got a chance to interview them at the Consumer Electronics Show I could not pass the booth by. What I like the most about this Ultra Mobile PC is the ability to get additional third party batteries for it that extend batter life on the unit. It has built in EVDO for either Sprint or Verizon making it the perfect device for streaming from anyplace with a decent EVDO connection. I want one of these devices pretty bad. One of the coolest products I found that is perfect for the traveling military person, someone on the go or even for someone looking to get rid of their monthly phone bill was being demonstrated by a company called MagicJack. I was able to get a MagicJack and plug it into my USB port on my Computer and I was making free phone calls in about 5 minutes. The software is loaded on the device and it installs virtually automatically. I was able to pick out a area code exchange of my choice and was dialing out and having people dial in. Sound quality was very good. Whats cool about the MagicJack is that plugs into your PC USB port then you plug a regular phone into it and your good to go. Pick up the phone and you have a dial tone. Very inexpensive product. Visit www.magicjack.com

Intel has an exciting new processor chip that will be in all new Ultra Mobile PC's in the coming months. Bringing more power, lower heat and significantly reduced power consumption. While I got to touch one of the chips I was not able to keep it. What this chip is going to do is cause Ultra Mobile PC to get smaller and provide more power to the end user. Next year when we go to CES we will have Menlo powered UMPC in our back packs streaming live. Really exciting stuff coming from Intel and we will have a whole slew of vendors putting out UMPC with this Intel Menlo processor.

The demonstrated their new "Video Transfer" product dubbed Press and Go.Press and Go is a very good term for this device and it is brillantly simple to use. You can plug and Analog Video feed into it and encode real time into a Apple iPod, Sony PSP, USB Memory stick. They were playing a "Home DVD" ;) and encoded it real time into the Sony PSP, iPod, Memory Stick. While not the first product to do this Neuros has a device that will do similar thing the price point on this will defnitley compete with Neuros.
