Ah candy corn. This delicious but deadly candy confection connotes images of the fall in the United States, of childhood and our beloved neo-pagan holiday, Halloween. Thanks to a growing acceptance of weird things in our culture, Halloween has grown in a big way to rival Christmas as American s favorite holiday. For many queer folks, it s the first time they don a drag outfit and explore what it s like to dress up as a man or a woman. For me, it s a chance to do really weird things in the name of Holiday Spirit. You should see me at a Christmas party. Is that mistletoe above your camel-toe? One of the best things about living in Chicago is our local, small and low-key Halloween parade centered in the heart of the gay part of town, Lakeview. Also known as Boystown, the modest parade attracts people from all walks of life, but a good percentage of the audience is Korean tourists. Don t ask me why, it just is. Here s a picture of me with Saan Huan, a costume-less, Korean Christian minister who somehow made his way to Boystown last year and was acting all weird around us, but somehow wouldn t stop following us with his camera. We invited him to hang with us for the rest of the night. It all turned bad when he thought we were putting drugs in his beer. I love to dress up as a combo of any costume and a vampire, because it s sexy and weird all at the same time and because it s an excuse to bite someone on the neck! Last year I was a knight in shining armor + vampire. This year I think I ll get myself a cowboy gear and be a cowboy vampire. Amanda s Halloweens turn out to be like Charlie Brown s Christmases. One costume idea Amanda had is to take a cardboard box and turn it into a Rubix cube. Another year she had nothing to wear and so she took her purple curtains and turned it into an awkward puple ghost costume that unintentionally offended a lot of people. Think the Teletubbies meets the Klu Klux Klan. Here s a bad costume idea: go as a blind date (a date wearing dark sunglasses). Be prepared for everyone to ask you if you are Ray Charles or Hellen Keller. Marc suggests wearing underwear, wrapping yourself up in salami and saran wrap and going as leftovers. I think he just wants to wear a costume he can eat. Another cheap, messy and dramatic costume idea is going as the classic Sissy Spacek character Carrie. Just put on a nightgown, a blonde wig and a tiara, then drop a bucket of fake blood on yourself at an inappropriate time. But the best costume you can wear 365 days a year is as a Feast of Fools fan! The wait is over! Here it is, the taping out live show from the Akbar in Los Angeles. What a great night it was for us. Performing before a live audience always is such a thrill. We had the best audience any podcast could ever ask for. All of us here at the FOF compound are very proud of everyone who participated in the live show and blown away by their performances. Ronnie, Sal-E, Sabrina Matthews, Steven Peterson and Buzz were all were amazing and delivered their bit with great skill. Ronnie and Sal-E, we discovered have a great knack for stand up and so we re looking forward to seeing them exploring this talent. We d go see them anytime anywhere. During the middle of the show, Fausto saw the opportunity to electrify the audience with a demonstration of Buzz s, one of our dedicated listener, fetish- taser electrocution. He picked himself to get shocked, just to get a little taste of what that poor student in Florida went through. Many of you asked him afterwards what it felt like, and all he could say was that he didn t need to drink any caffeine afterwards! It certainly woke me up. Buzz certainly knows his way around a taser. Sabrina Matthews thankfully turned up towards the end of the show. We were afraid she wasn t going to make it due to a previous engagement in Beverly Hills. We re glad and honored that she made it and she left us chuckling at her real life tales of being a bridesmaid. Check out the interview we did with Sabrina here on the Gay Fun Show. A real pleasure was meeting with many of the listeners after the show. There are definitely too many to mention here but it was nice to see faces from last year too like Mario, PupDon, Buzz, and Mike Rocco. TheThe Sister of Perpetual Indulgence also came out en masse. We re not sure if they are trying to convert Sal-E or just sharing make up tips. It was also nice to meet some new people like John M, Mike, Luis and.that guy who use to live at 12th and Powell in Erie We even had some surprise attendees like this gay wrestler we interviewed last year at the Gay Games and good friends Marsian, Jason Schupp, and Robin Monks. Steven Peterson represented in royal fashion as our honorary cake sitter. As you may remember, our first live podcast had Victoria Lamarr dressed up as Ann Coulter sitting on a cake. So you see, Steven had some big shoes (and a seat) to fill and passed with flying colors! It really is a skilled art and he mastered it perfectly. Gonna fly now, because today the Feast of Fools takes you to Philadelphia. We re knee deep in cheese steak sandwiches, Liberty bells and the origins of fabulous 70s disco music, we re talking about the city of brotherly (and sisterly) love: PHILADELPHIA. The city that s home to the first Oscar-winning Hollywood motion picture about HIV/AIDS wants the gay tourists to come and shake your booty. So listen up as our pal Gregg Shapiro talks this fabulous city and all the great things they offer. One of my personal favorite is the Philadelphia Live Arts Festival (Philly Fringe) that draws thousands of performers and audience members in what probably is the nation s best live theater, music and new art festival. My advice is get yourself a festival pass and try to get on the list to the more popular shows, as those sell out quickly. But don t fret, most of the stuff happening in the two week extravaganza is high quality work, and sometimes the quieter shows are some of the more exciting ones. In 1997 I performed there as part of the Ladybeast Linkup, where Asimina Chremos (one of the founders of the Feast of Fools) and I and a bunch of other dancers and queer inspired performance artists shook our booties on the Philly stage. I popped out of a paper egg and sang some cabaret songs while balancing a martini glass on my forehead, all the while eating fire and looking like a hallucinogenic extra from a Sid and Marty Krofft TV show.
