La selección artificial de seres humanos fue sugerida desde muy antiguo, al menos desde Platón, pero su versión moderna fue formulada por vez primera por Sir Francis Galton en 1865, recurriendo al reciente trabajo de su primo Charles Darwin. Desde sus inicios, la eugenesia (término derivado del griego ‘bien nacido’ o ‘buena reproducción’) fue apoyada por destacados pensadores, incluyendo a Alexander Graham Bell, George Bernard Shaw y Winston Churchill. La eugenesia fue una disciplina académica en muchos institutos y universidades. Su reputación científica se vino abajo en los años 1930, época en la que Ernst Rüdin empezó a incorporar la retórica eugenésica a las políticas raciales de la Alemania nazi.
