Ruairidh leaves the Isle of Eigg this week, but he remains in the Small Isles as he heads off to the Isle of Canna.nnThere is a place in Canna called Coroghon Castle. It’s not a normal castle. In Gaelic it’s called the Corra-dhùn. The steep fort or hill. Although it is not big, it is steep. The building is next to the shore. It is very old. It is in a poor condition. If somebody doesn’t do something soon, it won’t be there long.nnAccompanying Gaelic text, grammar points and vocabulary are all available at bbc.co.uk/litir.

The Isle of Eigg’s nickname is the Isle of the Big Women. According to oral tradition, it goes back to the Seventh Century. The island was still under the control of the Picts. Indeed, it was under the control of a Pictish queen. Find out more about Eìgg’s nickname and this Pictish queen in this week’s podcast. FEAR A' BHATA

FEAR A' BHATA

from Dailymotion - most recent videos on November 07, 2009

I did some research and discovered that one of the most often sung Gaelic songs, which I think could be the unofficial Anthem of the Highlands and Islands, was written for a member of our little Clan by someone who married into our Clan! The song Fear a' bhàta mentioned in this text and usually given as traditional was composed in the late 18th Century [the late 1700s - after Culloden, but before the Highland Cleareances (read; de facto Ethnic Cleansing) - ROB] by Jane Finlayson (Sìne NicFhionnlaigh) of Tong, Lewis for a young Uig fisherman, Donald MacRae (Dòmhnall MacRath). The part of this story which is rarely told is that they married each other sometime after she wrote the song. Last week, Ruairidh was telling us about what the opinion Gaels had of goats in times gone by. That was that they were capable of killing and eating snakes. Well, it’s interesting how often the goat appears in Gaelic proverbs “The thing that kept the ivy from the goats”. What does that mean? Find out in this week’s podcast. The last day of the Mod 2009, a festival of Scots Gaelic music, dance and culture. Above the bay in Oban, it's a sunny Saturday morning in mid October 2009 as the complex ancient Gaelic tunes come with a mighty joy and laughter. NB the language chooser does not include an option for Gaelic, nor even one for 'other'. which seems a bit unfair. I'm loath to label this singing 'English, because it most definitely is not English, it's even a celebration and reclamation of one of the first languages our English overrode! But I am writing in English, so I guess I better leave it.. Sorry Scots! xx

The Irish poet and philosopher John O'Donohue was beloved for his book Anam Cara, Gaelic for "soul friend," and for his insistence on beauty as a human calling and a defining aspect of God. In one of his last interviews before his death in 2008, he articulated a Celtic imagination about how the material and the spiritual, the visible and the invisible worlds intertwine in human experience.
