http://go.tagjag.com/7 - During a recent live call, Charles nearly knocked me out of my chair when he proclaimed that he LOVES Windows Vista. I was honestly shocked, especially since the calls were supposed to be about Windows 7. Charles stated emphatically that he never had issues with Vista, and that it actually just worked for him. We did, of course, end up discussing his views on Windows 7, and about Microsoft in general. http://twitter.com/chrispirillo - http://chris.pirillo.com

Foxit Screencast

Add to iTunes | Add to YouTube | Add to Google | RSS Feed I recently asked all of you to submit your screencasts to me for review. The best of the best will be chosen to be featured here, in my various channels and outlets. This provides content of a different perspective for our community, and gives you new exposure for your work! Marques has submitted an excellent screencast, showing you an alternative to Adobe s PDF Reader 8 FoxIt. Foxit Reader is a free PDF document viewer. It is incredibly small, and exceedingly fast. It supports virtually all versions of Windows. In the past, you had to download a huge PDF reader from another company, sit and wait for installation and updates, and then finally open your PDF. With Foxit, you simply install one small file and you re ready to go. Foxit also features an annotation tool, and text conversion. What other free PDF reader can say that and mean it? For Marques, it only took about half the time to open and load as Adobe did. That is a significant improvement. He didnt have to wait on a splash screen the document just opened. You can also view your PDF as a text document using Foxit thereby copy and pasting things from the PDF to any word editing program. In my book, free software that has better features than its paid counterparts is nothing but pure win. Thanks to Marques for providing this look at Foxit Reader for the community! The USB Breast Warmers may have been created just so engineers could look at women in bras, but I'd like to know if I'm missing something here. We'll be gettting a hands on with the Droid tomorrow. The HTC Droid ERIS is also launching for $99 after a $100 mail in rebate. Sony Ericsson's new phone is called the Kurara. The OS is Symbian S60, it'll have a 3.5" touch screen with an 8.1 megapixel camera capable of 720p video. We're having a meetup in New York on November 20th. Details are being worked out over on my blog, calilewis.me. Many people have been waiting for the E-P2 Micro Four Thirds Camera from Olympus. They finally announced the launch today. One of the reasons we want one of these cameras is that it has Full Manual Control of shutter and aperture when the camera's in Movie Mode. Brief 656 was brought to you by AngiesList.com/geek. As an Angie's List member you get access to fellow member reviews of contractors and healthcare providers. How to Disable the UAC in Windows Vista

Add to iTunes | Add to YouTube | Add to Google | RSS Feed Recently I threw down the gauntlet, asking all of you to submit your best screencasts. I plan to highlight the best of the best here in my channel, and help promote yours. Dylan has sent a few in to us now, and they re fantastic. This particular screencast is going to help you quickly and easily turn off the UAC in Vista. The first way that Dylan shows us to disable the UAC is to go into your control panel, and select User Accounts and Family Safety . Then go to Add or Remove User Accounts . Highlight your account so that it s selected. You ll see an option at the bottom that says Go to the Main User Accounts Page . Select that, and at the bottom of that screen, you ll see where it says Turn the User Account Control On or Off . Choose that, and uncheck the box. You ll then need to restart your computer for the changes to take effect. For more advanced users who are comfortable when using msconfig, you can use this method, instead. Go to your Start menu, and type msconfig in the search box so that it will open that up. Once in msconfig, click on the Tools tab. Scroll down until you see where it says Disable UAC . Click the Launch button, and another small box will pop up telling you the operation was completed successfully. Close that little box, click OK in msconfig, and close everything. Reboot your computer, and you re finished! See how easy that was? Thanks much to Dylan for providing us with this screencast. Keep them coming, everyone! Who knows you could be featured next. Phil Plait – Active Skepticism Online

Add to iTunes | Add to YouTube | Add to Google | RSS Feed Phil talked to us about science communication online, and how the new (now teenaged, in more ways than one) media has affected it. Specifically how instant info passed on Twitter can actually make misinformation spread faster than good info, and how freaking hard it is to clean up once that happens. Phil Plait is an astronomer, author, blogger, and skeptic which means you better have some good evidence for any claims you make to him! In fact, Phil is the President of the James Randi Educational Foundation, a non-profit based on the works of noted conjurer and skeptic James Randi famous for debunking the spoon-bending efforts of Uri Geller. The critical thinking movement is growing by leaps and bounds, and the JREF has been at the center of a grassroots effort to bring more skepticism into everyday life, especially online. Phil writes the Bad Astronomy Blog, now hosted by Discover Magazine, and he blogs for the JREF and for SkepticBlog. His books debunk many misconceptions about astronomy, and to his chagrin he still deals with Moon Landing deniers, astrology, and UFO believers to this day. In his opinion and he s right the Universe is cool enough. Why make up stuff about it? Want to embed this video on your own site, blog, or forum? How to Install Your Favorite Windows Software
from The Chris Pirillo Show on November 04, 2009
Duration: 0

Add to iTunes | Add to YouTube | Add to Google | RSS Feed The easiest ways to get programs these days is to download them. When I was getting started with software, you had to actually go to a store and buy them. The Internet didn t really even exist back then! There s software available for any platform these days, but this video is all about Windows and the ease with which you can install programs using Ninite. Choose your software, and let Ninite do the rest. It will download and install your programs with the default setup. It will even say NO WAY! to installing toolbars and other such nonsense that some programs try to sneak past you. All Ninite will do is install the latest versions of the programs that YOU choose. Nothing else is downloaded or installed onto your system. I can t think how it could get any easier than this, other than if the service could read your mind and know what programs you want without your having to click anything. Ninite has excellent choices, as well. I recommend and use many of them already! Choose your favorites in the following categories and get ready for easy install: Web browsers Instant Messaging programs Media Players Photo/Graphic Editors Document creation and editing programs Anti-Virus programs Runtime utilites (such as Java) Utilities Compression programs Developer tools The list is very good, with excellent choices and it sticks them all into one nice, neat little installer. If you know of any other easy ways to get the latest and greatest software, I d love to hear about it. Want to embed this video on your own site, blog, or forum? Christine Peterson – Life Extension for Geeks
from The Chris Pirillo Show on November 04, 2009
Duration: 0
Duration: 0
Add to iTunes | Add to YouTube | Add to Google | RSS Feed Compared to our computers, our bodies are mind-bogglingly complex systems. There s no life extension pill available today, and none is likely to arrive soon. Fortunately for us, we can use our technical skills to evaluate and implement today s life extension techniques, some of which can be fun at least from a geek perspective. Christine Peterson catalyzes new technologies: first, focusing on atoms, she co-founded Foresight Instituteto advance the field of nanotech. This work is accomplished by providing balanced, accurate and timely information to help society understand and prepare for nanotechnology through public policy activities, publications, guidelines, networking events, tutorials, conferences, roadmaps, and prizes. Her work is motivated by a desire to help Earth s environment and traditional human communities avoid harm and instead benefit from expected dramatic advances in technology. This goal of spreading benefits led to an interest in new varieties of intellectual property including open source software, a term she is credited with originating. More recently, having noticed that — as some crudely put it — aging sucks , she works to further life extension, especially within the tech community. She serves on the Advisory Board of the International Council on Nanotechnologyand the Editorial Advisory Board of NASA s Nanotech Briefs, and served on California s Blue Ribbon Task Forceon Nanotechnology. Christine is the co-author of one book on nanotech, and another on collaboration technologies. She is a member of IEEE, and an alumna of MIT. Firas Khatib – FoldIt
from The Chris Pirillo Show on November 01, 2009
Duration: 0
Duration: 0
Add to iTunes | Add to YouTube | Add to Google | RSS Feed Firas Khatib is a postdoctoral researcher in David Baker s Laboratory in the Biochemistry Department at the University of Washington. He is currently trying to cure cancer by getting people to play online video games, specifically Foldit, but has yet to break the news to his grandmother who would not approve. Firas received his PhD in Bioinformatics from UC Santa Cruz in 2008 where he gave the graduate commencement speechfor the school of engineering; luckily they still gave him his degree. The University of Washington are investigating whether the brainpower of humans worldwide can be brought to bear on critical problems posed in computational biology. The long term goal of this project is to utilize the combined power of humans and computers in order to build accurate models of disease-related proteins by introducing a new approach: distributed computing driven by human intuition. The problem of accurate prediction of protein structures remains one of the most important unsolved dilemmas in biology. Determining the correct structure of a protein helps researchers successfully target them with drugs. Currently, experimental methods for solving protein structures result in accurate, high-resolution solutions, but cannot keep pace with the quantity of information. Developing new computational techniques to produce experimental-quality models is one of the most important problems in computational structural biology. While progress in high-resolution protein structure prediction is being made, particularly here in David Baker s research group using our Rosetta prediction algorithm, consistent computerized production of models with atomic level resolution are still out of reach. Even with the current supercomputing and distributed computing power available, the protein structure prediction field is still years away from being able to predict the 3D structure of any protein whose genome has been solved. A novel approach to this problem is the use of human puzzle-solving intuition and pattern recognition skills in conjunction with computers running the Rosetta algorithm. Foldit is an interactive Rosetta-based program that was recently developed by the Baker Lab and University of Washington s department of Computer Science and Engineering. This program allows users around the world to directly manipulate protein structure models on their home computers in real-time using Rosetta s energy function. The ultimate goal of Foldit is to use results from the computer program to improve protein structure prediction algorithms by capitalizing on human 3D problem-solving skills. Human users can recognize that certain moves they make might temporarily result in a worse Rosetta energy score, but lead to a better overall energy score. Humans have the advantage of awareness that often the only way to get to the correct low energy state is to go through many high energy conformations. Foldit users are also able to share their solutions with others around the world, taking advantage of the strengths that different people have. The more knowledge we have on how proteins fold, the better equipped we will be in the fight against protein-related diseases, such as cancer and HIV. Foldit can contribute to this global fight by giving worldwide participants an immediate and relevant application for scientific knowledge, and hopefully reinforcing motivation to understand the underlying science. What Does Windows 7 Bring to the Table?
from The Chris Pirillo Show on November 01, 2009

Add to iTunes | Add to YouTube | Add to Google | RSS Feed During live calls recently, the main topic of discussion was Windows 7. Ross was happy to get through, and immediately asked what he felt I think Windows 7 brings to the table for an average or intermediate computer user. I have my own opinions, of course. I m interested in seeing what all of YOU think. So, let s hear it! I feel there are a variety of features that Windows 7 brings to the table. The most prominent ones are the taskbar and Start Menu changes. Those are excellent, for sure. Some people are complaining about them, of course, wishing they were more like very old versions of Windows. Personally, I think it s about time they were so different! Functionality-wise, everything works very well on these. I feel there is an epic UI fail, but that s just me. Maybe it s because I m anal-retentive? Do you think? But I just don t like that the popup menu where it shows recent programs has huge gaps between the program names. However, the normal all programs menu is missing those gaps.
