Episode 120: June 2008 Monthly MixEpisode 120: June 2008 Monthly Mix
from The Bay Bridged - San Francisco Bay Area Indie Music » Podcast
June 24, 2008

It s time once again for the latest installment in our Monthly Mix series of episodes, where we collect a number of songs from new and recent releases by a variety of Bay Area bands. This episode also marks the debut of a new feature we re going to start incorporating into our mix shows, a new short interview with a band we featured a year or two ago on The Bay Bridged to discuss a new album released since our first conversation. About all of the bands: Ted the Block ( Kicking Down The Ladders ) is the name of the solo project from Winston Goertz-Giffen, also a member of Saything and formerly of The Aimless Never Miss. His latest album Thinkinging is an eclectic collection of patchwork rock full of melodic twists and turns. He doesn t have any future shows listed, but we ll keep you posted. Love is Chemicals ( Over Land, Over Sea ; later, My Ticker Tape Parade and Agitator ) kick off our series of new interviews with Bay Bridged alumni. Their sophomore work Song of the Summer Youth Brigade was recently released digitally and we caught up with the band at our studio to talk about their dynamic, evolving sound. You can purchase SotSYB on iTunes or from their web site. We ve also included an uber-catchy song from local garage-pop duo Sassy ( Sweet Child ). The band celebrates the release of their debut album Get a Grip this Saturday, June 28th at 12 Galaxies, where they ll be joined by Von Iva, Hot Tub and El Fay. San Francisco s Young Moderns ( It s A Dirty Job ) fly the power pop banner proudly on their upcoming album New Mission Renaissance. Catch this sextet at Amnesia this Thursday, June 26th, with My Sweet Earthquake, also included in this mix. They ve also got a bunch of great live videos at their web site. Ash Reiter s ( La Bahia ) self-titled album incorporates elements of jazz, folk and pop alongside her compelling vocals. She s got a number of upcoming dates around the Bay, including one this Thursday, June 26th at the Million Fishes Gallery, and was recently the subject of a Daytrotter session. My Sweet Earthquake ( Stupid Baby ) brought us a fun synth-rock track from their recently-released debut EP. You can find out more about them in this interview Emily recently conducted and at their web site where they ve posted videos, remixes and more. The band will be at Amnesia this Thursday, June 26th, with Young Moderns. Fronted by a Belgian named Emile who their press release notes is addicted to plastic surgery and speaks little English, Mon Cousin Belge ( Tweaker Bitch ) brought us a rocking garage-meets-soul track from their upcoming album Quelle Horreur, out soon on World Famous in San Francisco. They ll be at Thee Parkside on June 28th, with Ice Cream Socialites and The Caldonias. Are you subscribed to the The Bay Bridged weekly podcast? Episode 119: Built for the SeaEpisode 119: Built for the Sea
from The Bay Bridged - San Francisco Bay Area Indie Music » Podcast
June 17, 2008

This week s episode of The Bay Bridged Podcast is presented by KQED Interactive. This week s featured band is Built for the Sea, a San Francisco quartet whose textured rock-pop calls to mind to the legacies of shoegazer and melodic alternative rock music without drawing too heavily from either camp. The group started as a songwriting project for singer-keyboardist Lia Rose, a veteran of the Bay Area music scene, and their 2006 self-titled album showcases her strong command of soaring melodies and bittersweet personal lyrics. Rose s voice has drawn many listeners into the band s music and it s central to the songs too, a versatile instrument equally capable of airy musings and earthy wisdom. But while the group started as Rose s, it has evolved into a truly collaborative band full of talented musicians. We ve actually already interviewed members of this band twice before on the podcast, speaking with guitarist Jonny Latimer as a member of The Aimless Never Miss and drummer Eric Kuhn for his band Silian Rail. With fourth bandmate Daniel Mckenzie also a member of Shuteye Unison and formerly of the now-defunct The Rum Diary, it s a collection of songwriters and performers to be reckoned with and suggests an exciting new chapter for the band. In addition to our interview with Rose, Latimer, and Mckenzie, we ve included four songs in this episode two from their 2006 debut and two from the Rose Hill Collective s recently-released Volume 2 compilation. You ll hear more about the Collective in the interview. Upcoming Shows: Saturday, August 30th Bottom of the Hill with The Action Design, Shuteye Unison, and Carcrashlander 9pm, $8 advance/$10 door, All Ages (Purchase tickets here) Links: - Built for the Sea s MySpace page and web site - Purchase their self-titled debut album from CDBaby and on iTunes - Download a bunch of BftS songs at FreeIndie.com - Visit the Rose Hill Collective s MySpace page Are you subscribed to the The Bay Bridged weekly podcast? Episode 118: Last of the BlacksmithsEpisode 118: Last of the Blacksmiths
from The Bay Bridged - San Francisco Bay Area Indie Music » Podcast
June 10, 2008

This week s podcast features San Francisco s Last of the Blacksmiths, a trio mixing the sounds of folk, rock, Americana, country and blues into some moody, beautiful music. Someone once told me that the Blacksmiths have perfected the indie rock slow-jam, and while that oversimplifies it, it does highlight the fact that the band has developed its own uniquely hypnotic sonic identity, maximizing the impact of space and dynamics in its brooding melodic tracks. The Blacksmiths capture those dynamics well on their second album, Young Family Song, released last month on Vanguard Squad Records. Coming three years after their well-received self-titled debut, the guys opted out of self-recording this time around, instead working with producer Desmond Shea to capture the feel of their live performances. That live feeling gives the record an inviting looseness, allowing song layers to breathe without ever becoming jammy. It s an exciting and unique album that you can lose yourself listening to in its entirety and should herald new successes for the skilled group. In addition to an interview with the guys, conducted last week in our studio, the episode also includes four songs from their new album. Upcoming Shows: Thursday, July 3rd 12 Galaxies with Megafaun 9pm, $tba Friday, July 11th Live on Cool As Folk on KDVS Friday, July 11th Sophia’s Thai Kitchen (Davis, CA) with Prairie Dog 10pm, $tba Links: - MySpace page and web site - Vanguard Squad Records, where you can purchase Young Family Song and other LotB releases and stream songs from the band s catalog Are you subscribed to the The Bay Bridged weekly podcast? from The Bay Bridged - San Francisco Bay Area Indie Music » Podcast
May 27, 2008

This month s mix episode features songs from nine great Bay Area bands. More about all of the bands below: Local garage-rockers The Mantles ( Trust ) have been receiving quite a bit of good press for their debut 7 on Dulc-i-tone Records. The group has a number of shows coming up in June and July, with their next at the Hemlock Tavern on June 13th. Last of the Blacksmiths ( At An Early Hour ) recently celebrated the release of their new album entitled Young Family Song and the CD is a worthy follow-up to the group s excellent 2005 debut. The band will be at Sophia s in Davis on July 11th. Local synth-poppers Sweetie ( Saturdays ) celebrate the release of their brand new Saturdays EP, out today on local label Gold Robot Records. You can check out another song from the record over at Macktronic. Girls ( Lust for Life ) psych-influenced lo-fi pop impressed us a whole lot recently and we re excited to check out their debut 7 , now available for pre-order from True Panther Records. The band s record release show will be on July 5th at the Hotel Utah. Recently featured band Beatbeat Whisper ( Mismanaged Skies ) recently released their second album, Wonder Continental, and it s really terrific. Although they don t have any Bay Area dates lined up, they ll be heading on a Pacific Northwest tour in July. Moomaw ( September ), also known as singer-songwriter Nathan Moomaw, recently released 26 on his label Gazebo Music. The CD is a collection of songs written and recorded one-per-month during the year he was age 26. He ll be performing at Penny Arcade s third anniversary show on Wednesday, June 3rd at the Make-Out Room. The Heated ( Hot Bastard! ) is Cristina Espinosa, formerly of punk band The Pre-Teens, who played all of the instruments on the project s recently released self-titled EP. You can hear more of her indie pop-rock at El Rio tonight, May 27th, and at Blondie s on June 7th. San Francisco folk duo The BrokenMusicBox ( Time ) released their debut album Waking the Sound earlier this year. In addition to primary band members Kimberly Contreras and Tony Wentzel the CD features musical contributions from members of 31Knots, Film School and The Pleasure Kills. Tippy Canoe and the Paddlemen ( Mass Transmissions ), recently reviewed here, celebrate the release of their new CD Parasols and Pekingese on June 15th at the Make-Out Room. After that, the group s taking their old-timey pop to the East Coast. Are you subscribed to the The Bay Bridged weekly podcast? Episode 115: GeographerEpisode 115: Geographer
from The Bay Bridged - San Francisco Bay Area Indie Music » Podcast
May 20, 2008

This week s episode of The Bay Bridged Podcast is presented by KQED Interactive. This week, our podcast features San Francisco indie rockers Geographer, a guitar-cello-drums trio gaining buzz around the Bay for their dynamic indie pop sound. The band s frequently hushed vocals, personal lyrics and intimate melodies betray singer/songwriter Mike Deni s past involvement in the local folk scene, through which he met collaborators like Kacey Johansing (who sings lead vocals on several songs) and developed some of the songs that have since evolved into Geographer s seriously anthemic music. That evolution can be attributed to Deni s love of synths and the impressive chops of Berklee-trained bandmates Nathan Blaz (cello, electronics) and Brian Ostreicher (drums). As we learned during our interview with Mike and Nathan, they ve been influenced by compositional electronic music, an inspiration evident in the group s dynamic crescendos and synth layering. The guys are continuing to explore these elements as they further develop their sound. To the band s credit, Geographer has received a substantial amount local press prior to releasing an album. Their debut, tentatively titled Innocent Ghosts, is nearly complete, and the trio expects to release it later this summer. Meanwhile, they ll be taking an initial Pacific Northwest tour in June while continuing to play around the Bay. Upcoming Shows: Thursday, May 22nd Sophia’s (Davis, CA) with Salt Samovar 10pm, $tba Wednesday, June 11th Annie’s Social Club with Two Sheds, Friday Mile, and Marabelle Phoenix 8pm, $7 Links: - Geographer s MySpace page and (under construction) web site Download: - Can t You Wait - Rushing In, Rushing Out

Episode 114: The Blank TapesEpisode 114: The Blank Tapes
from The Bay Bridged - San Francisco Bay Area Indie Music » Podcast
May 13, 2008

This week, our podcast spotlights The Blank Tapes, an Oakland rock band led by prolific singer-songwriter Matt Adams. The Tapes latest album, their third, is 2007 s Daydreams, an album that continues to gain positive reviews including one recently from Rolling Stone as listeners discover new favorites among the its 26 tracks. The record s length allows Adams to try a number of different styles, including 90s-reminiscent indie rock, folk-pop, and British rock sounds all guided by strong melodic instincts and relationship-driven lyrical imagery. Adams played most of the instruments on Daydreams and self-recorded it on a favorite 8-track, but he doesn t isolate himself on a musical island. As Matt told us during our interview, he s influenced by the strong community of musicians he s surrounded by, several of whom have accompanied him on a number of lengthy tours. That guidance should emerge on a nearly-finished album of cover songs by his friends bands, although you shouldn t just expect new covers soon. As he told us, Adams has a wealth of songs he s looking to unleash in new Blank Tapes records in the near future. In addition to our portions of our interview with Matt, conducted a few weeks ago at our studio, we ve included four songs from Daydreams in the episode. Upcoming shows: Friday, May 16th Ghost Town Gallery with Silver Pines and Damon and the Heathens 8pm, $tba Friday, May 23rd Kimo’s with Fpodbpod 9pm, $tba Links: - The Blank Tapes MySpace page and web site - Purchase Daydreams online here Are you subscribed to the The Bay Bridged weekly podcast? Episode 111: Man/MiracleEpisode 111: Man/Miracle
from The Bay Bridged - San Francisco Bay Area Indie Music » Podcast
April 22, 2008

This week s podcast spotlights the eclectic rock of Man/Miracle, a quartet that recently relocated to the Bay Area after finding substantial success in Santa Cruz. The group debuted in the scene last year with the Bear on Bear EP, which earned them quite a bit of acclaim and radio play around Northern California. The excitement around the release is quite understandable, as the mostly uptempo CD mixes the self-conscious and intimate melodies of indie pop with the nervy energy and excitement of post-punk and dance-rock. Considering that the EP consisted of most or all of the songs the band had completed writing at the time of recording, it was certainly an auspicious debut. Man/Miracle have continued to write and record since its release, all the while developing an energetic live show in venues from house parties to the Mezzanine, where they played during this year s Noise Pop festival. The band s latest material, some of which was released on a now sold-out tour CD earlier this year, finds them continuing to experiment with new sounds and styles, while retaining their strong melodic pop songwriting. We re pleased to include some of these new songs in this episode and are looking forward to a new release from Man/Miracle later this year. We spoke with the full band a couple of weeks ago at The Bay Bridged studio, discussing among other things the group s origins, the importance of crowd feedback to their music, and the band s next steps. Man/Miracle have upcoming shows in May on both sides of the Bay: Saturday, May 17th The Stork Club with The Chop and Plasterkatz 9pm, $tba Saturday, May 24th Hemlock Tavern with The New Centuries (CD release) and The Dont’s 9:30pm, $6 You can hear more music over at Man/Miracle s MySpace page, where you can also find information about how to purchase the group s Bear on Bear EP. While their tour CD is currently sold-out, the band plans to release a new single in the coming months, and we ll update you on that when we know more. Thanks for listening! Episode 110: 20 Minute LoopEpisode 110: 20 Minute Loop
from The Bay Bridged - San Francisco Bay Area Indie Music » Podcast
April 15, 2008

This week, we re pleased to feature 20 Minute Loop, a San Francisco quintet that likely need no introduction to fans of Bay Area indie pop music. The group was founded in 1997 by Greg Giles (vocals/guitar), who was soon joined by Kelly Atkins (vocals/keyboards). Over the course of their three albums, the interplay between Giles and Atkins, as charismatic singers and clever lyricists, has become one of the band s signature elements, as has the group s skill at writing complex yet melodic art-pop. These are the elements that drew us and many others to 2005 s Yawn + House = Explosion and we ve been eagerly anticipating the band s long-announced follow up. The good news is that the fourth record is almost here and, from what we ve heard, it s a very worthy successor to Y+H=E. The strong melodies and engaging lyrics are present as expected, while the band has now endeavored to streamline some of its more complex tendencies. The result is some great pure pop music. (more )

Episode 109: Master/SlaveEpisode 109: Master/Slave
from The Bay Bridged - San Francisco Bay Area Indie Music » Podcast
April 08, 2008

Our podcast this week spotlights Master/Slave, a San Francisco duo who play highly danceable indie rock. It s a big sound for a two-piece, layering drum machines and synths with live drums and guitars into tightly-wound pop nuggets; it s also one that impressed us when we first saw the group about a year and a half ago at Bottom of the Hill. After a number of setbacks, the band, now consisting of Matt Jones (vocals/guitar/synths) and Ephriam Nagler (drums), is finally celebrating the release of their first full length album Scandal. The new CD is a very strong and exciting work, and the seamless blend of retro-referencing electronics and modern guitar pop is a credit to both Jones songwriting and Nagler s production skills. As the title Scandal might suggest, Jones broaches subject matter like Expensive Goodbyes and a Top 8 Ultimatum with a flair for melodrama and a self-aware sense of humor that informs but never overpowers the material. It seems apparent from the album that this band is having fun, although that element aids the band s work, rather than hurting it. That sense of fun was confirmed by our interview with Matt, during which he discussed the five national tours he s taken Master/Slave on in three years. (more )
