By the time it was over Nick felt like the whole world was spinning and shaking. He looked into Merediths eyes again. She stared at him for a moment. Then she leaned close to him, whispering in his ear,"Do you wanna come for dinner tonight?" Nicks heart skipped a beat. Oh no. He thought. "I uh.. i cant." He said. "Why not?" She asked. She looked so happy there in his arms, and he knew that what he was about to say would crush her. But he couldnt keep this from her. It just wasnt fair. He opened his mouth to speak, but no words came out. "Nick, whats wrong?" "Your acting weird." He swallowed, tried to speak and had to swallow again. "I.....i just you cant come for dinner tonight." She looked confused. "Ok well thats fine its not that big a deal." "We can just do it tommorow or.." "No." Nick shouted. She stepped back as if he'd hit her. "Whats your problem Nick?" She sounded like she was about to start screaming at him. "Im sorry, I just...." But he stopped as he saw Leslies car come rolling toward his house. Oh no. Nick thought. No no no no no no. This couldnt be happening. She couldnt be here early. She just couldnt. "Nick?" "Hello?" Then she followed Nicks gaze. Followed it right to the pretty brunette who hopped out of the car and headed towards Nick. "Oh no." Nick said out loud. Meredith looked at Nick, and she still hadnt figured it out yet. Nick looked at Meredith, ignoring his girlfriends voice. He was about to speak when suddenly Leslie came up to him and put her arms around him. "Hey baby." She said. She was about to kiss his cheek when Meredith said,"Baby?" Nick turned. He would never forget the look on Merediths face just then. She stepped back. But her eyes, that was what got to him. They widened, and they burned into him. Leslie looked like she wanted to say something, but she just stared at Meredith. Meredith stood there for what felt like forever. Finally she turned and ran toward her house. Nick had seen this before.That night almost a year ago out on the beach. He didnt want it to happen again. He began to chase her, forcing Leslie, who had frozen in place, to drop her arms from him. She caught up with him and grabbed his arm. "Nick, where are you going?" She asked him, holding tightly to his arm. He turned around. Surprisingly, Meredith had stopped at the door and was looking at him to see what he would do. Nick glanced back at Leslie, who was looking confused and slightly angry. He looked back and forth at both of them. He was faced with the choice of his girlfriend or the girl that had been on his mind since last summer. Just then, the door opened at Nicks house and his dad called out,"Nick, Leslie come one dinners ready!" "Just a second!" Nick called back. "Come on Nick." Leslie said, pulling him towards his house. Nick hesitated then followed her. He looked back just as they were about to be in his yard.
