FontCast #4 — Webfonts Week: Christian Schwartz

FontCast #4 — Webfonts Week: Christian Schwartz

from popular posts - blip.tv (beta) on November 27, 2009

On our fourth day of Webfonts Week I thought it wise to hear from someone who repre sents the future of type design. Who better than Christian Schwartz? With hundreds of typefaces under his belt by the time he reached age 30, Mr. Schwartz is one of the most accomplished and promising young type designers in the world. Most recently lauded for his custom typefaces for The Guardian, Deutsche Bahn, and the Empire State Building, Christian has also released retail fonts under the banners of FontFont, Emigre, House Indus tries, Font Bureau, and his own Commercial Type. I asked Christian about what lies ahead for web fonts and how he approaches the challenge of designing type for the screen. FontCast #5 — Webfonts Week: Erik Spiekermann

FontCast #5 — Webfonts Week: Erik Spiekermann

Still speaking a-mile-a-minute and showing no signs of slowing down, Erik Spiekermann coyly calls himself an old guy . It s true that he s been around for every incarnation of type metal, film, and digital but he s no fuddy-duddy when it comes to new technology and new methods. Spiekermann embraced the fledgling world of digital type early on when he founded FontShop 20 years ago, and he s just as forward-thinking now about licensing type in an era of Web-embeddable fonts. I pulled him aside one morning during the Typ09 conference in Mexico City to talk about the interesting parallels between using web fonts as a service and typesetting the old-fashioned way. FontCast #3 — Webfonts Week: David Berlow of The Font Bureau

FontCast #3 — Webfonts Week: David Berlow of The Font Bureau

Taking the pulse of the font development community would not be complete without hearing from the man who has been active in type design and technology from the beginning of the digital era. David Berlow designed typefaces for Mergenthaler, Linotype, Stempel, and Haas typefoundries in the 70s, pioneered digital type at Bitstream in the 80s, and founded The Font Bureau with legendary art director Roger Black in 1989. The Font Bureau library is often the first place magazine and newspaper designers look for new typefaces. Berlow's diverse perspective, experience, and strong opinions give him an insightful, provocative view of Web typography and I think that comes through during our discussion in Mexico City. Enjoy, and please comment with your thoughts. Learn more: http://fontfeed.com/archives/webfonts-week-david-berlow/ http://fontfeed.com/archives/tag/webfonts-week/
