Composition Our own brain's function to keep us upright makes us seek balance in composition. An equally weighted frame appears to be at rest and makes the viewer calm. Skewing the balance or adding vertical or angled lines that take away from a balanced frame can give your shot dramatic tension. You don't necessarily want the viewer to feel peace and harmony all the time. Tilting the camera a few degrees to one side will keep your audience from relaxing. They might not even notice the horizon being off, but subconsciously, there is a feeling that something isn't quite right. Using a wide-angle lens that distorts a shot so that lines aren't parallel or perpendicular also creates tension.

Right now there are countless reels of movie film on shelves, in drawers, and in attics. The films themselves may be brand new 16mm experimental works or 8mm home movies from the 1930s. They may be dirty and faded or as vivid as the day they were returned from the lab. All types of film have organic components, which, like all organic material, are subject to decay. Over the past several decades, film archives around the world have discovered new techniques for preserving film, but many are prohibitively expensive or complicated for individuals with small collections and limited resources. However, many can be adapted for collections that are stored in homes and studios.
