Salmon Swimming Free – Rainforest Dispatches, chapter 7/9
from Choogle On! with Uncle Weed - Renegade documentaries on November 05, 2009

Visiting again with friend Kevin, Uncle Weed discusses the negative impact salmon fish farms impart on the local aquaculture. Specifically, Atlantic salmon living in pens attract hazardous sea lice, are unable to spawn, are fed with small fish imported from South America, and are dyed to appear more attractive in the supermarket. Further the politically controversial fish farms add little benefit to the local economy. While figuring out what happened, Uncle Weed recollects the tense logging blockades in early 1990s and compares current conditions through lens of deep ecology and sustainable development practices. Leadership Initiatives-FHS Chapter We aspire to give students around the world the opportunity to effect sustainable change within their nations. As young citizens we have a unique perspective into our communities that allows us to identify the obstacles to development. As we work through these barriers, we will transform communities in the United States and Nigeria by the creation of efficient service initiatives. Building upon this standard of honest and responsible leadership, we will be empowered to lead the people and industry, changing thousands of lives. In 2009 we will partner with a development program at ATBU in Nigeria created by student s like ourselves. We will learn together, work together and hopefully grow together. It is our hope that this year we will help our partners abroad create jobs, fix development issues and that we FHS students will learn about project planning, business creation and fundraising while gaining a unique understanding of Globalization. By the end of the program FHS members and our partners abroad will have experience being community leaders and will have changed lives forever. There is no age limit to change the world.

There is a continual diatribe against aquaculture in the media and from green groups. At the same time we are being advised by health authorities to eat more fish and global fish stocks are decreasing rapidly. We also know that unlike cattle and sheep, fish do not belch tons of methane. There are very good reasons for us to eat more fish and some contradictions here that can only be resolved by sustainably grown aquaculture. This article puts the comparison between fish and cattle farming and points out some of the major regulatory and public perception inconsistencies. For more information and case studies go to http://www.enviro-action.com
