Arriving for the glory of the natural world, the experts find themselves chronicling the end of species, of the climate, of the ecosphere. I'm Alex Smith. We're going to dedicate this Radio Ecoshock program to the sea, and to one of it's lovers, Dr. Daniel Pauly, head of the Sea Around Us Project. His latest article, published in The New Republic magazine September 28th, 2009 is titled "Aquacalypse Now, The End of Fish". I'll tell you where to find more Daniel Pauly online. We'll hear some clips from Dr. Pauly, and an interview with one of his prize students, Dr. Jennifer Jacquet at the University of British Columbia. Her paper shows that a third of our ocean harvest is being fed to pigs and chickens. That's right, in this upside down world, pigs may not yet fly, but they have been morphed into major ocean predators, thanks to our industrial food complex. In our second half hour, we'll zero in on the mighty salmon. This popular food fish is challenged around the world by humans - their rivers dammed, streams destroyed, our sewage and warming oceans. No worry. We'll make our own - farmed fish. Our guest Catherine Stewart of the Living Oceans Society warns that aquaculture, from Scandinavia to Chile, is pushing out the sustainable wild stock. Horrible things are happening, in places you and I never see. It's a big conveyor belt taking the last of our sea creatures right into the agri-industrial complex. Jacquett says consumer choice, knowing what to eat and not, is good - but nowhere near enough to preserve the fisheries. Pigs, chickens and farmed salmon don't get to chose their menus. We need to reach not just government, but the big fish companies, and the supermarkets - the big players that shape the ocean debacle. We also chat for a moment about former ocean explorer and TV personality Jacques Cousteau. Why has he vanished from public view, and from the brains of the younger ocean science crowd? Jennifer also talks a bit about Dr. Pauly. I've covered scientist Dr. Daniel Pauly whenever I can. He's one of the most experienced. She represented Greenpeace in the negotiations with multinational forest executives, as they hammered out the Great Bear Forest agreement. That protected up to 50 pristine mountain watersheds along the Central and Northern coast of western Canada. Then Stewart was hired by The Living Oceans Society to handle negotiations with a giant aquaculture company, Marine Harvest. It's one of three Norwegian fish-farming corporations straddling the world, from Canada to Chile to Europe. Living Oceans works in partnership with several other NGO's, including the David Suzuki Foundation, the Georgia Strait Alliance, and more. You'll find out what you can do about it. Salmon aquaculture, as we've heard, is simply unsustainable. Here is what Dr. Daniel Pauly said about it: [Pauly on Aquaculture] We could go on and on about the risks from fish farming. Just two quick examples. Toronto's Globe and Mail newspaper reported November 23rd that Asian Carp were poised to invade the Great Lakes. DNA tests showed this invasive species, which threatens to kill off most other food fish from the lakes, has bypassed a fence set up by the Army Corp of Engineers. The fence was suppose to stop the Asian Carp from traveling from the Mississippi River to the Lakes. The Asian Carp was brought to the United States to control algae in catfish farms. Now it's poised to wreak major changes in both Canada and the United States. Or how about this one: some aquaculture operations have been feeding dried cow blood to the fish. Now scientists are hurriedly testing to see if that practice risks transmitting Creutzfeldt Jakob disease, known as Mad Cow Disease, through farmed catfish. See the article in Science Daily November 6th, 2009. On October 22nd, 2008, Daniel Pauly listened to a detailed listing of the Canadian government's failure to protect endangered ocean species. This was a break-through speech by a top government advisor, Dr. Jeff Hutchings. When it comes to protecting the oceans, Canadians have a wretched record. The U.S. isn't much better. The Europeans have already stripped their cupboards bare. The Japanese steal fish from people all over the world. It's sad, and it's madness. By the way, the latest ocean science questions why so many ocean species died during the great extinction periods on land. Like the time the dinosaurs died, and the four previous great extinctions. Many scientists now believe the ultimate cause of massive marine die-off was ocean acidification, derived from excess carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. [Pauly on extinction from acidification] Finally, what does an ocean scientist say, one he knows that democratic governments fund the industrial fisheries, the very machine that strips our ocean stock down to nothing? Dr. Pauly was asked to comment, and this is what he concluded: Democracy isn't working. The scientists tell bureaucrats the fish are disappearing, and nothing happens, no matter who is in office. All we can do is raise Hell. If we try as individuals, like the old anarchists, Pauly says, we fail. The only solution is to organize. Seal beaters justify atrocities by attempting to say it obtains them money, or it's their livelihood, or that it puts food on the table, so the horrors they commit should be perpetuated. This is False. Just because something is done to obtain money, does not make it right. There are those who exploit children forcing them into prostitution for money. That's their livelihood too, but that does not mean it is right. Drug Pushers seed communities and entice youths with heroin and methamphetamines, that is the livelihood that provides money for some in certain poor communities, yet this does not mean it should be praised as such a fine livelyhood. Dogfighters ply their abhorrent trade to earn money, scammers defraud the elderly and get funds that put food on grifters tables, yet this does not excuse it. Poachers using snare traps to kill animals and massacre them for their horns and their ivory tusks to sell pieces of their bodies for money probably feeds poor poachers and their associates, however this excuse does not suffice to a judge to avoid prison. Not too long ago, white plantation owners used blacks as slaves on cotton farms and used them to earn money for the white owners and pay their bills, and provide food for their families, and even bring in money to provide jobs for white farm-hands, and even probably provided a significan amount of commerce as part of the economy, and possibly these men complained that telling them not to exploit the free labor obtained from african slaves would hurt their livelihoods, and take food out of the poor white plantation-owners children, yet today we now know this is wrong, and we do not stand for this today. Just because some act provides spoils of money, income, furnishes the perpetrator food, or homes, or cars, or his clothes, does not suffice to justtify crimes against humanity and nature. And with all this said, the seal hunt does not even earn significan money at all. The seal hunt is a Financial LOSS to the nation. It costs more than it bring in. 30 million Canadian people get their paychecks docked so that 0.00015 of the population of a tiny horde of lobbyists Sealers which are a Special Interest group can obtain less then 350 bucks, less than anyone could earn at even something akin to a yard sale. And Sealers already have 2 jobs. They already earn tens of thousands of dollars as Fishermen. Sealing is 2ndary. And also the govt already pays fishermen welfare UI checks which it gives Sealer Fishermen for sitting at home, while it is not fishing or sealing season. Thus, Sealers already earn tens of thousands. Sealing is Not their only job. Seal hunting does NOT bring significant income, it earned sealers in 2009 less than 18 cents an hour. 29 bucks. in a whole month. Avt per sealer of 350 bucks compared to tens of thousands they already are earning doing fishing. And they already obtain govt payment checks every month. So if you ever see anyone attempt to say that it is their livelihood, or earns a "significant income" or is needed in order to put food on the table, this is now shown False and the individual who attempted to say it is now discredited. This argument cannot be used ever again. If anyone such as a seal beater supporter tries it, they will now be exposed. THE SEAL HUNT IS CAUSING FINANCIAL DAMAGE TO EVERY HARD WORKING CANADIAN CITIZEN. Click to find out HOW MUCH MONEY Sealers lose, and the staggering Economic Damage they inflict on Canada. A constant myth by the DFO admits a veteran Sealer, Jack Troake "Few people will sign on for a crew knowing there is a small chance of splitting a meagre income", said Fisher Ray Newman. The National Post FINANCIAL TIMES published an article on the Economics of the Seal hunt. "The Millions Ottawa spends subsidizing the Seal Hunt" http://network.nationalpost.com/np/blogs/fpcomment/archive/2008/04/17/the-millions-ottawa-spends-subsidizing-the-seal-hunt.aspx The article reveals that the seal hunt COSTS Canada up to 50 to 60 million dollars in expenses per year. Including paying millions upon millions of tax dollars docked from 30 million hard-working Canadian citizens paychecks to move Canadian Coast Guard ice-breakers into the sealing areas to clear paths through the ice and lead them to where the seals are. THAT is the COST. Keep those figures in mind. NOW LETS SEE HOW MUCH THE SEAL HUNT EARNS: The TAC or Total Allowable Catch was 280,000 seals in 2009. Notice that this is FEDERAL LAW! The seal hunt CANNOT take more seals than this number. At the time of the National Post article, a seal pelt brought in 52 bucks. In 2008, 1 seal pelt brought in at most 33 bucks. In 2009, that figure is 15 bucks. And as low as 2 dollars each if imperfect. That means, for 2007, that IF Every seal pelt brought in by a sealer was perfect, you would calculate 52 dollars for 1 pelt and multiply by 275,000 seals killed. THIS is from the article, BEFORE the price dipped: 275,000 seals. x 52 dollars. ------------- 14,300,000.00 but this is not the profit from the seal hunt. One must divide that half because that's not profit! There's expenses! To go on the hunt in the first place takes a boat! You need to buy that boat, insure that boat, repair that boat, buy fuel, supplies, arctic clothing, equipment, gear, rigging, weapons, bullets, etc! They estimated that the expenses are half. That's 50%. So 7,150,000.00 = all the hunt brings in, and it COSTS upwards of 50 to 60 million, so the seal hunt is a LOSS to 30 million Canadians of 40 to 50 million dollars right there. But wait. That was 2007, when a seal pelt was 52 dollars. It's not that anymore. The price of 1 seal pelt NOW is only 15 bucks. And that's if it is perfect, not gouged, shot, marred, ragged, stained, cut wrong, torn, scarred, etc. Otherwise 1 pelt will bring in as low as 2 dollars. The TAC for 2009 is 280,000. So multiply those: 15 dollars per pelt x 280,000 seals = 4,200,000! That's it! That is how much the entire industry of the commercial seal hunt grosses. Now deduct Expenses.... 4,200,000 * 50% = 2,100,000 dollars. So the profit from this hunt, cause of international furor, and dusgust, and split among 6000 people, is a tiny 2 million dollars! But remember, that has to be split among 6,000 individuals who Gail Shea, DFO, and pro sealer tell everyone this income supports! Plus their family of 4! You must divide the 2.1 million over 6000 people! It's like if you had a 2.1 million dollar lottery ticket, but 6000 people also got the right number, so you have to share with 6000 other people. So take 2.1 million divided by 6000 = 350 bucks per person. That's it! That is how much 1 sealer makes. A YEAR! That's what your annual salary would be as a dirty sealer. Sealers earn more than that in just 2 UI welfare checks! You could earn more at a yard sale. This is an insignificant source of income and 10 times that could be earned more easily in 1000 different ways. And this could not support a family of 4! But lets pretend this was a 'real' job that was being offered. And you were going to apply for it... This is what its stats & perks are: ANNUAL SALARY: $350. Your paycheck would be 29 dollars a MONTH. That's 7.29 a week. This is not significant income, this cant feed a family of 4! This is 1 dollar and 45 cents a day. This is 18 cents an hour. And all of this international stink that Sealers bring down on Canada, costing you, and every canadian citizen 60 million dollars a year, is all so that a seal beater can get .18 cents. So the next time you hear Gail Shea, or a seal hunt cheerleader, or ANYONE try to tell you that this is 35% of their income, you will now know Gail Shea's and DFO's claims are Ridiculous. Sealers already have a 2nd job. They are fishermen! They earn thousands and thousands of dollars as Atlantic Fishermen! They also get UI checks. These are weekly payments given to them by the government, all because "fishing season" only lasts a couple of months, and the rest of the 10 months of the year they can sit at home, tell the govt they are "unemployed" and collect checks. This is what they are after. As to the amount the hunt brings in, any person could make more money selling canadian drift wood on ebay! A child's lemonade stand or ladies bake sale would earn more than seal killing! A sealer could earn more than the seal hunt selling girlscout cookies. Raking leaves. Shoveling snow. A panhandler could beat a sealer. A sealer could make more money baby-sitting. And with how many sealers are ON LINE on the internet making pro sealing posts and comments, they certainly seem to have internet! Look how many all seem to have expensive computers and get online preaching how they need to kill seals to get this 18 cents. They could make MORE by having a web business online! Canada just invested 1 million dollars into supplying INTERNET service to the outlying regions of the province, so they could have online web businesses and make more than this! ALL THIS INTERNATIONAL STINK IMPACTING 33 MILLION GOOD HARD-WORKING CANADIANS SO THAT 0.00015 of the population, a pack of extremist seal bashers can whine and complain about 18 cents! And now you know. And time to let others know.

NEWS! Canada Wins Victory in EU SEAL BAN VOTE! 33 Million Canadians Can rejoice today, as the entire country of Canada has pulled off a big win in the EU Seal Hunt Product Ban Vote! The entire 27-member bloc of the European Union (EU) has just voted to completely ban all products from the Canadian Commercial Seal Hunt! This is a great victory for Canada, and will benefit the majority of all Canadian citizens. There are 33 million Canadians who do NOT participate in the seal hunt. The horrors are committed by merely a small sect of Sealers that comprise only 0.0015 of Canadas population. Canada can finally begin to cast off the stain that this small Special Interest Group of extremists bring on the great Canadian Flag. Sealers have brought burden onto Canada's back and due to the help of the EU, Canadians can finally begin to stand tall and feel that a weight has been lifted. Sealers are a tiny handful of a faction of killers that are mainly concentrated in a small number of Atlantic sealing provinces, not all of Canada. The perpetrators of the seal hunt are mainly concentrated in Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, Labrador, Prince Edward Island (PEI), and Isles de la Madeleine on the eastern coast. However over 90% of them are concentrated in Newfoundland. Nevertheless, even out of Newfoundland, which has a population of 500,000, sealers number less than 1% of the Newfoundland population. Therefore, 99% of Newfoundlanders can celebrate that they will soon be free from the odor of the international stink that this 1% faction of fanatical Seal killers brought upon their good name. The Seal Hunt is an Economic loss to the nation, and every Canadian must pay for the financial losses of these sealers. The losses are staggering, numbering in the hundreds of millions of dollars. 30 million good canadians have money docked out of their hard-working paychecks in order to pay for the losses caused by these lobbyist group of sealers. And finally all of Canada will see their paychecks increased. Aboriginal Natives such as the Inuit are exempt from the ban, and will benefit as well. A number of inuk are against the Commercial Seal Hunt as well. The commercial seal killers have no relation to subsistence. And the Commercial Industrial sealers leave 90%+ of the carcasses to rot on the ice. They are not doing it for food, but still plan to complain to the WTO in a last ditch ploy against it. Reminder, seal meat have been shown to be contaminated with Methyl Mercury poisoning, and omega3 seal oil has been found decomposed and ruled to be unfit for human consumption, yet sealers still attempt to entice humans to eat it, and sealers believe its their right to force others to buy it or eat it. The EU vote of 550 to 49 shows overwhelming support by the people of the EU for the 33 million good Canadians. Congratulations to Canada on the Victory against Sealers! 33 million Canadians now have great reasons to celebrate and thank the EU!

False Comment #1 "We don't kill baby seals anymore" - Canada DFO seal hunt info. Seal Hunt Myth told by seal killers.A common lie attempted by Canadian Seal clubbers is to try to make the public ( you ) believe that they Don't kill "baby" seals anymore. This is False. 97% of what they kill are babies. Here's how their lie works. There is a Law, called the "whitecoat" law, which merely says you're not "supposed" to kill seals before they moult from white fur to grey fur at 14 days. First of all, this doesn't mean it doesn't happen. There's laws against speeding too, but it still occurs. Next, A seal's lifespan is 30 or 40 years. About half a humans. And a seal does not become reproductively mature until 6 or 7 years. This also corresponds to about half that of humans. Humans mature at about 12 to 14 years. So a seal becomes an adult at aroung 6 or 7 years old. However seal clubbers kill seals right after their fur changes from white to grey, which happens at around 13 days! This corresponds to an infant! They try to use the color of their fur to say that a seal somehow instantly becomes an "adult" overnight between day 12 and 13! This is false. In truth, 97% of the seals killed are between 12 days and 12 weeks old. These are biologically all baby seals. They have lied to you. Also, it was Animal helpers that were able to pass that whitecoat law in the first place, that help spare the youngest white neonatal ones. Sealers act as if they take credit for the law, and boast about it. But if it weren't for activists, these men would still be killing the whitecoat babies as well.
