Data Deluge in the Petabyte Age by Andrew McCaskey The new Wired series (which I assume is the theme for the new issue of Wired Magazine, which I have not yet seen) is on the new world of the Petabyte - and how such barely imaginable volumes of data could become commonplace. Two years ago I was trying to explain the enormity of a Terabyte of storage to my wife. Now, for a few hundred dollars, that is available in a single drive at the local Best Buy or Walmart. The most disturbing article that is in the Wired series concerns the notion that the deluge of data will make the Scientific Method obsolete - that theories or models will no longer be necessary and that direct, empirical or behaviorial information is all that will be required to simulate or predict reality. Wrong. And wrong for the reason that it leads us to believe that what we observe is correct. The one thing about the scientific method, of theory, of models, is that they are provisional. A set of facts are observed, and the process repeated by others resulting in the same observations. The theory or model is constructed, and is good enough -until the next set of reproducible observations that don t quite match the predicted values. Then a change to the theory, an improvement of the model- or a wholesale new viewpoint that matches the observations predictive power. Petabytes of data are not going to remove the need for scientific method and observation - in fact, it will make it even more necessary. It s the Bandwidth, Stupid by Andrew McCaskey It should come as no surprise - taking a survey among technically aware consumers - that HDTV was way down on the list in comparison with good connectivity and dependable high speed internet access. I m still amazed at the attempts by some vendors like DirecTv trying to bundle a triple play by aligning with a local telco for DSL high speed service. I can afford this attitude only because I m in a Comcast High Speed area, as much as 9 Mb/second down and 1.7Mb up. Backup and mobile access is a EVDO card- not the speed but hopefully backup only. If Verizon ever gets here with the FiOS service - whatever the price- I m ready to write the check. Actually, by the time you figure the other connectivity checks that I write, Verizon FiOS is going to be a bargain. And when the Wimax overlay gets here, I ll grab that one as well. The vendors are selling the wrong Triple Play. Triple play is insuring that you have three ways to connect to the internet. Walmart s Local Move by Andrew McCaskey The move by Walmart into the local Classified advertising marketplace is one more nail in the coffin of local newspapers over the long term. The value of classified advertising is something like $30 Billion each year. While the auction process on eBay has developed as one highly successful model, continued fraud charges (especially for items like laptops) have driven a lot of transactions to dealing locally - face to face through Craigslist. The problem has been that Craigslist is present only in large and medium sized cities. Thus, the opportunity that the Walmart branded service outsourced to oodle.com uses to target the areas in which the retail giant is strongest - rural areas and small towns. The Walmart effect could be a very, very good match to the needs of the same base of consumers that form much of their core market. As much as the high income segment scoffs at Walmart, they are an incredible force in the marketplace - and this could be leveraged into another win. Like it or not.
