Firefighters Struggle Against California Blazes
from YouTube :: Videos by AssociatedPress June 30, 2008
SelectPlusFirefighters Struggle Against California BlazesFirefighters Struggle Against California BlazesThe Associated PressMore than a thousand wildfires are burning in California, and as firefighters struggle to keep up with the advancing blazes, forecasters offer little hope for help from Mother Nature. (June 30)[Notes:ANCHOR VOICE] [Notes:NATS UP - shot of aircraft releasing fire retardant - DOD HANDOUT]Fighters are attacking the hundreds of wildfires in California from the air.But they aren't getting very far -- and forecasters say the dangerous weather conditions won't let up anytime soon.[Notes:KION Shots of Big Sur fire]Forecasters expect more thunderstorms with lightning -- but little rain. That's just what sparked hundreds of fires a week ago. From Bakersfield to Redding, health officials are urging people to stay inside and limit the time they spend in the smoke-filled air.[Notes:DOD HANDOUT - planes on runway]The situation is bad enough to warrant an emergency declaration from the president -- and the federal government is helping. Marine Corps helicopters and National Guard planes are on the scene, NASA is helping spot the fires, and FEMA has been activated. [Notes:DOD HANDOUT - aerials of fire]Despite the massive effort, firefighters are in something of a stalemate with the blazes which have scorched more than 550 square MILES of land and destroyed dozens of buildings. [Notes:KION shots of Big Sur Fire]And they warn - the traditional peak of fire season is late July and August. ___ ___, The Associated Press Author: AssociatedPress Keywords: wildfires firefighters struggle against california blazes Added: June 30, 2008
