Eric Kroll: Collecting and Photographing Fetish
from recent posts - blip.tv (beta) June 09, 2008
Fetish photographer Eric Kroll is nothing short of a legend. His 1994 Taschen book "Fetish Girls" sold 200,000 copies and got a lot of people curious about the world of fetish erotica. But Eric isn't just a photographer, he's also a self-proclaimed obsessive collector. His collection of the erotic photography of Weegee and Elmer Batters is on display next to his own work at the Anna Kustera Gallery in Chelsea through July 3rd. Naked City TV got a peek at the pieces on display in Chelsea, where Eric revealed what compels him to collect certain images. The photographer also spins a few tales about both his work and the stuff he collects, and talks about how he feels about explicit porn. Last but not least: the lovely lady you see cavorting in the background is Molly D'Amour, a performer and model from Los Angeles.

Episode 9: the neologistic semantic showdown spectacular
from recent posts - blip.tv (beta) May 08, 2008
In this our 9th episode becomes the Jay, DC and Amy show when Kat2 Kit has no headset, Boris is sick and Don can't make it. We recorded everything on Skype and as Kat2 predicted the sound quality is probably the best we've had since the early all-in-one-room-with-one-mic episodes. SHOW NOTES: We debate the term "Hyperformalism" - Amy asks how much it has to do with the concept of formalism in high-modernist critical theory, DC says not as much as she thinks. We debate the legitimacy of what DC calls "re-mediated" artwork in SL when an artist makes a virtual representation of something from another medium. Jay asks if part of the debate over whether art in SL should look like something from the real world or try to be apart from the real world relates to your attitude toward what you think will come in SL later... that is do artists have in your heads the notion that eventually SL will be entirely immersive, engaging all of our senses in a way that rivals the real world --Amy says that Jay is Gay and BIW is all a sham. "we are nothing but water-bags" "we are meat-monsters" - DC. We also all discuss our favorite forms of Booze. Panel included: Amy Freelunch, Jay Newt, DC Spensely, Kat2 Kit. Artists Discussed: Cheen Pitney, Jazrupt Naheed, Nebulosus Severine, Selavy Oh, Ichibot Nishi, Juria Yoshikawa, Gwenette Writer.

Vincent Van Gogh Paintings
from Vimeo / Recent Public Videos April 16, 2008
Vincent Van Gogh Paintings from allpaintings on Vimeo. (1853-1890) Vincent van Gogh was born near Brabant, the son of a minister. In 1869, he got a position at the art dealers, Goupil and Co. in The Hague, through his uncle, and worked with them until he was dismissed from the London office in 1873. He worked as a schoolmaster in England (1876), before training for the ministry at Amsterdam University (1877). After he failed to get a post in the Church, he went to live as an independent missionary among the Borinage miners. He was largely self-taught as an artist, although he received help from his cousin, Mauve. His first works were heavily painted, mud-colored and clumsy attempts to represent the life of the poor (e.g. Potato-Eaters, 1885, Amsterdam), influenced by one of his artistic heroes, Millet. He moved to Paris in 1886, living with his devoted brother, Theo, who as a dealer introduced him to artists like Gauguin, Pissarro, Seurat and Toulouse-Lautrec. In Paris, he discovered color as well as the divisionist ideas which helped to create the distinctive dashed brushstrokes of his later work (e.g. Pere Tanguy, 1887, Paris). He moved to Arles, in the south of France, in 1888, hoping to establish an artists' colony there, and was immediately struck by the hot reds and yellows of the Mediterranean, which he increasingly used symbolically to represent his own moods (e.g. Sunflowers, 1888, London, National Gallery). He was joined briefly by Gauguin in October 1888, and managed in some works to combine his own ideas with the latter's Synthetism (e.g. The Sower, 1888, Amsterdam), but the visit was not a success. A final argument led to the infamous episode in which Van Gogh mutilated his ear. In 1889, he became a voluntary patient at the St. Remy asylum, where he continued to paint, often making copies of artists he admired. His palette softened to mauves and pinks, but his brushwork was increasingly agitated, the dashes constructed into swirling, twisted shapes, often seen as symbolic of his mental state (e.g. Ravine, 1889, Otterlo). He moved to Auvers, to be closer to Theo in 1890 - his last 70 days spent in a hectic program of painting. He died, having sold only one work, following a botched suicide attempt. His life is detailed in a series of letters to his brother (published 1959). Video Provided by Allpaintings Art Portal. Music by Antònia Font Cast: allpaintings

Patrick Rock
from Humor As Art February 26, 2008
Iggy Want to Fuck nice... Patrick Rock Rock's Box Gallery Judging by what Patrick Rock's artist statement: "I am not prepared to make a statement at this time." leads me to believe the work is open for interpretation. Which is the way great art should be, and Rock's work leaves enough for us to contemplate in the short amount of time he gives us in his videos? performances? videotaped performances? The lines are not defined, nor should they be. Rock's work breaks form in a lot of traditions of humor, performance art, and video art which is why the work stands out. It's an honor to have his video pieces on this site, as I've been admiring his work, nearly, once my foot landed in Portland. He's an Oregon native who studied in San Francisco only to come back to Portland to start his gallery Rock's Box. If you're an artist coming back to Portland, starting your own gallery is in my opinion "doing it right".
