How can I make my footag look more like film?
from Vimeo / Recent Public Videos April 15, 2008
How can I make my footag look more like film? from ronniemcbride on Vimeo. I am no pro just yet but I figure someone else will be looking for the answer to this question. I will try mu best To answer the question to the best of my knowledge. If any of you pro find this incorrect please chime in. Keep in mind this just one part to making your footage look more film like on a budget while. Skip to the bottom to read other suggestions for achieving a better film like lok on a budget. 1. I am shoot my footage HDV 108060i but this is can be done in standard definition with some obvious changes to what I am doing. 2. Open your host application of choice 3. Set your sequence(FCP)/Compostion(AE) to 1440 x 1080, 23.98 fps[AE specific: set your Aspect ratio to HDV 1080/DVCPRO HD 720 (1.33) 4. digitize your footage I set my capture setting to Prores 422 5. Apply the Magic Bullet Filter to your clip after you have placed it on the time line. From my understanding this filter will de-interlace your frames which will get you closer to the film look . basically you are now dealing with whole image frames(aka progressive) implies. 6 send your project to the render cue in AE and check your settings make sure you are using the current settings of your project. In FCP export Quick time and use current settings. You should get have a nice de interlaced piece of footage running at 24 fps ala the frame rate of film. Give it a try tell me what you think. Other suggestions for better "film like look" 1. focus on taking the time to light your subject when possible. if your out doors a white bounce card, sheet, or other type of reflector could do wonders for you production value. 2. take time to white balance your camera whenever possible. 3. this is not totally necessary but if you willing to invest in a 35 mm adapter get one. I suggest getting a vibrating adapter over a static. Only reason I prefer this is because with a static you adapter you haveto constantly blow dust of the focus plain. vibrating adapter cost a heap more but are totally worth the the money. 4 Do not use the zoom on your camera lock off your shots. a a zoom screams home video. 5. Pan slowly. if you watch any film notice that the pans are super slow and smooth like butter. Her ea budget tip carry a rubber band and use it to pull the arm on the tripod. With practice you have smooth pans that slowly stop just like the pros. I am not pro but I figure someone else will be looking for a not so jargon heavy answer to this question. I will try my best to answer the question to the best of my knowledge. If any of you pro find this incorrect please chime in. Remember I am just am not a pro but I figure if you like the look of the footage I have produce in this sample then you probably would like to know how did I achieve the look. Keep in mind this just one aspect to making your footage look more film like on a budget. there no substitute for good lighting, sound and engaging story. Skip to the bottom to read other suggestions/tips for achieving a better film like look on a budget. I am shoot my footage HDV 108060i but this is can be done in standard definition with some obvious changes to what I am doing. 1. Open your host application of choice. I am using mainly FCP but Vegas , Premiere Pro, or any other app (like After Effects) that will allow you to control your output settings will work. If plan on using any of my suggestions out lined bellow, pick a editing system that allows you to also use the the magic bullet plugins. (this is not necessary though) 2. Set your sequence to 1440 x 1080, 23.98 fps[AE specific: set your Aspect ratio to HDV 1080/DVCPRO HD 720 (1.33) 3. digitize your footage I set my capture setting to Prores 422 there are some great pluses for using the codec by apple to encode your video. 5. Apply the Magic Bullet Frames Filter to your clip after you have placed it on the time line. change tweak your setting ther only like 5-10 at most. From my understanding this filter will de-interlace your frames which will get you closer to the film look . basically you are now dealing with whole image frames(aka progressive). 6. Color correct to your liking or aplly a filter effect like the one i use in magic bullet. I not a colorist so it really about correction your footage to my liking. I mean you do want you image to reflectthe real color but also you want to choose a color grade that supports the story you telling or to create a unique style like “Amelie”. What you have not scene it go rent it. Warning it is french subtitles but dont be a woosy A.D.D boy try it you might like it lol 7 In FCP export Quick time and use current settings. Current setting is the settings you created when creating your sequence. You should get have a nice de interlaced piece of footage running at 24 fps ala the frame rate of film with a look and style you friends and family or client will. Give it a try tell me what you think. Other suggestions for better "film like look" 1. focus on taking the time to light your subject when possible. if your out doors a white bounce card, sheet, or other type of reflector could do wonders for you production value. 2. take time to white balance your camera before shooting. you can also let the camera do it for you but remember the camera making a decision for you may not give you the answer you want. 3. This is not totally necessary, but if you willing to invest in a 35 mm adapter get one. I suggest getting a vibrating adapter over a static. Only reason I prefer this is because with a static you adapter you have to constantly blow dust of the focus plane. vibrating adapter cost a heap more but are totally worth the the money. 4 Do not use the zoom on your camera lock off your shots. a a zoom screams home video. 5. With practice you have smooth pans that slowly stop just like the pros. 6. Spends some time learning how to color correct or invest in a nice color correction tool like magic bullet looks by redgiantsoftware.com. 7. Get to know your camera inside and out. take the time to understand the benefits of setting your own manual exposure, shutter speed and or aperture. 8. Shoot in manual mode !! sset your own seetings on the camera and lock them in. You dont want your camera compensating for a cloud that just happen to pass by,;Right? suggested sites to checkout: www.videocopilot.net www.lynda.com http://www.izzyvideo.com/ www.dvcreators.net www.mixmediasalad.com sameless plug but you might catch me online there if not send me an email there is more but I got to run.
