Laws might get passed and moral judgements might be imposed, but how logical are such views when it comes to the sharing or copying of digital material. FAP586: Beer, Coffee, and Loan Consolidation, Senate legislation, file sharing, Matthew Ebel Student Financial Aid News + Chronicle: The U.S. Senate voted on Monday to reject an amendment that would have created a federal loan program that would compete with private loans. + The amendment, which was offered during debate on legislation to reauthorize, or renew, the Higher Education Act (S 1642), was defeated by a vote of 53 to 38. The Senate continues debate on the Higher Education Act today, with final passage of the sweeping bill expected in the late morning or early afternoon. + The failure of the amendment came as a victory for lenders -- who had worried that the program would supplant private lending -- and for students -- who had feared that an influx of federal student aid could encourage states to slash higher-education budgets and raise tuitions. + But the amendment's defeat came as disappointment to the sponsor, Sen. Sherrod Brown, Democrat of Ohio, who has predicted that the government could provide students with non-guaranteed college loans at attractive rates. This morning Republicans defeated the Employee Free Choice Act in the Senate. It was organized labor's top legislative priority in Congress. It had already passed the House. The Employee Free Choice Act would have made it easier for unions to organize in the workplace. But even with Democratic majorities in both houses of Congress and strong union support the measure failed. It was opposed by Republicans and business. Is the loss of the Employee Free Choice act bad for you? Is it a victory because you don't want a union? Or is it irrelevant to your work place? Also, the University of Washington is helping the music industry collect three to five thousand dollars from students who download music illegally. We'll ask why.
