Wydad of Washington - WAC - Therill Cup Champions

Wydad of Washington - WAC - Therill Cup Champions

from cdic on March 11, 2009
Duration: 385
Washington Athletic Club (WAC) won Washington International Soccer League's (WISL) Terrill cup for the second time with a decisive 4 - 0 win. WAC's supporters who managed to attend were indeed entertainment. The game overall was exciting and fun. First-half was even with very few chances created by both teams. The first half ended in a 0-0 draw. The second-half, however, was a complete different story; a halftime talk of the coaching staff with the players saw them morph into a more energized and organized side. During that half and with the continuous fans' support and chants, WAC began to slowly take control of the match. The game could have ended with WAC scoring more than four goals considering WAC's performance. Left winger Said Hilali scored three of the four goals earning him the MVP honors, and Ali Hidara scored one. The goals were high quality most notably Hilali's second goal which was a pure show of skills: Charging with the ball from the left side, Hilali dribbles two defenders to find himself face to face with the goalkeeper. With the impression that he is about to kick the ball into the net, he abruptly switched direction with the ball on his feet after the keeper had already committed to one side, causing two chasing defenders to collide with the goalie. Hilali found himself alone before a wide open empty net. A gentle and a cool kick saw the ball caressing the back of the net. Such goals shatter defenses' confidence and that was the case in this instance for the opposing team. As for the other WAC players, there performance was solid and they entertained the crowd. Their display of skill and talent was through making nice crosses, covering each other and working as a team on defense, and providing a Petit Pont for fan's amusement. Goalkeeper, Oussama Moukram, was solid as usual. Fans in turn provided entertainment themselves through occasionally teasing their own team and making the players laugh, something that helped the latter relax and have a good time on the pitch. After the final whistle blow, teams shook hands and congratulations in a show of good sportsmanship. League's commissioner then presented WAC with the trophy declaring them Champions. Players, coaching staff, and fans alike congratulated each other. Souvenirs were taken in form of pictures and video. It was heart-warming to see new friendships forged, old ones rekindled, and people who have never met share joy and sense of pride and unity. As community members they were together and on the same page even if only for two hours. The entire experience was very positive and pleasant accentuating the power of a pleasure as simple as WAC. for additional coverage of Moroccan American activities, visit Moroccoboard.com at http://www.moroccoboard.com

Ten Moroccan girls and their two female coaches participated in a Sports Visitors program for the office of SportUnited, a program organized by US Dept of States Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. The group spent twelve days in the U.S. improving their soccer skills, learning to be leaders, and meeting with their American contemporaries. Their fast paced program included five soccer clinics organized by U.S. Mens National Team coach Jay Miller and Washington Freedoms Clive Watson. Jay Miller and former Womens National Team Member, Lorrie Fair, served as Sports Envoys to Morocco last spring. Mr. Miller jumped at the chance to continue to work with the Moroccan girls. Another highlight for the group was the opportunity to meet and speak with girls their own age. From practicing with the D.C. Stoddert U-15 travel team and Arlington U-15 recreation team to meeting with a group of 15 and 16 year old International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma female students at Banneker. The group was engaged in a variety of lively discussions. Many of the young Moroccan girls were stunned by the diversity of the people they met and pleased to see Muslims accepted everywhere as equals. Beyond the soccer clinics and meetings, the group had a range of cultural experiences that included visiting Mt. Vernon, touring the U.S. Capitol and the Mall as well as going to see the National Aquarium Baltimore. The group also attended a World Cup qualifier between the U.S. Mens National Team and Cuba as well as a match between the University of Maryland and University of Virginia Womens teams. Coach Halima Berrad remarked the values that Americans cherish are the same ones that my religion teaches. A reception and a fundraiser was hosted by the Washington Moroccan Club. Community members welcomed the Moroccan Soccer teens and presented them with a lot of encouragements and small gifts. 12-Showdown W/ Pres. Moroccan Human Rights Advisory Council

from cdic on June 10, 2008
Duration: 238
A routine meeting with the Moroccan Community turned into a tense shouting match with a group of individuals that almost broke down the tent. One fellow charged the stage to within inches of the officials, another one accused Mr. Herzenni of being a sellout and stormed out of the room, another questioned the position on the stage of the official portrait. The first person to ask a question flatly asked for a group resignation of the advisory counsel on Human rights members for non performance. And it went downhill, or uphill depending on one's point of view, from there. Luckily, Mr., Herzenni, who was flanked by Morocco's ambassador, Mr. Aziz Mekouar on one side and by Minister in Charge of Consular Affairs, Mr. Hassan Khantach, on the other side, kept a cool demeanor, and withstood all the fire lobbed in his direction and said, in essence, that nobody promised a paradise in morocco, That there are many unresolved problems, that it takes more than grandstanding to repair a dysfunctional justice and education systems, that progress is being made gradually and that there are no overnight miracles, that patience is needed. It was rough and gritty democratic intercourse that succeeded despite the storm, thanks mostly to Mr. Herzenni s patience and experience, to the diplomatic team that organized the meeting and took some risks,to the rest of the attendees, like Mr. Sallam Chahdi, a human rights activist, who drove from Boston,to ask one question at the meeting.
