Grand Funk Railroad - Flight of the Phoenix / Footstompin Music - Live at the Garden NYC

Grand Funk Railroad - Flight of the Phoenix / Footstompin Music - Live at the Garden NYC

Grand Funk Railroad: Mark Farner (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Don Bewer (vocals, drums); Mel Schacher (bass). Craig Frost (Keyboards) Recorded live at Madison Square Garden on December 23rd 1972. There is not much to the drums in these songs. It's kinda repetitive but it just has such a good groove to it that it just becomes more of a feeling. Nothing gets the blood flowing on a Sunday morning like this song. Everyone in my house was vibrating out of their beds! They are used to it by now! I think the original video was captured off of someones TV set so the audio is not that good either. That makes it really hard to follow as well cause it speeds up and slows down a bit.. But look at their faces - they are all having such a good time that night. I believe that this was also the night that their manager wanted to stop this show with a NYC sheriff due to the lawsuit that was between them! This is a great video that captures them at the prime in a live environment. You hear Don in the background letting out his emotions every 10 seconds with a lot of Yeah's If you watch the ending, Mark almost wipes out. Looks like he slipped on something. That would have sucked. Such a great performance only to end it with a wipe out. I hope I breathed a little life into this song and added some fidelity to a otherwise flat recording. Funk's first television appearance on Playboy After Dark show (Playboy Channel) Los Angeles - December 3. (The particular episode re-broadcasted on KTLA-5 TV - February 24 1970) A bizarre show for GFR to perform, you might say, however both cuts performed Mr. Limousine Driver and Please Don't Worry was matching the show... The challenge to perform lip-synching [!!!] was too 'Grand' as most big name groups had a spot on Hefner's popular show! It would also be a shot in the back for the -just released- second single Mr. Limousine Driver b/w High Falootin' Woman and the upcoming [now famous] Red Album including such rockin' cuts as Inside Looking Out and In Need... Some of you may disagree about the 'first television appearance' but I, who have studied Grand Funk... :o) believe that The Show taping in Hershey's WITF studios occurred months later, probably May 15 1970, no matter what info Capitol - EMI cd / dvd comp. gives... One of my favorite songs from Grand Funk's Survival album, captured here at the Itchycoo Park Music Festival, Manchester, TN - August 12. The screening material ended up on the Rock 'n' Roll Greats - Mark Farner In Concert! dvd, released in 2004. Track listing on this official (...) dvd is a little messed up.

**At this point in the show, the sound man started increasing the volume and it got pretty distorted. I did my best to clean up the audio.** Here is one of the Grand Funk Holy Grails. (Ok it isn't Shea Stadium) but it is the only known video of this rare pre-reunion concert from 1996. I was the only one with a camcorder there. For some reason, the security guy let me in and left me alone. I should have brought a tripod... I have the whole concert recorded and they did a few rarities. Depending on the response, I may post some more. Enjoy! ** If you are a diehard GFR fan, take note that the instruments are different from the subsequent tours that were to follow. Mark Farner is still using his Peavey guitars here! Also on board are Howard Eddy Jr on Keyboards / backround vocals and Ricky Farner on rhythm guitar / backround vocals.

Monumental Funk II -- Grand Funk Railroad tribute

Monumental Funk II -- Grand Funk Railroad tribute

40 YEARS OF FUNK! Days like these 40 years ago, a new born group from Flint, MI was added to the countless of that era. The difference with THIS group was that it promoted as if they were a supergroup from day one (!) And supergroup they were in short space of time, playing at large festivals, such as the one in Atlanta the 4th of July 1969 in front of almost 200.000 surprised spectators! The news spread like wild fire and the buzz about them became so strong, that were chosen as 'headliners' at many later festivals! With such an unbelievable crowd response, it wasn't an accident that Grand Funk soon became the most successful group in America, selling more albums and tapes than any other artists in 1970 (with less or no radio and press support...) And if in 1970 the band was so successful [4 gold albums in less than 5 months] nothing could stop the Railroad in 1971! They did two world tours and even sold out the legendary -55000 seat- Shea Stadium in New York City, in just 72 hours!!! [a record - period] Unfortunately, minimal footage [for such a legend band] has been preserved on film from their early trio days with Terry Knight as producer and manager... Here's for the first time some unseen footage of Mark, Don & Mel jamming, just like Knight witnessed them that cold day of March 1969... Hey all you brothers and sisters! A 'Grand' thanks for all your kind comments! That's the fuel keeps me going... :o) Lots of comments and certainly, tons of personal messages and emails I'm getting' since I've post it, so forgive me if I haven't reply to you individually... I'll try to give some more info that might be helping in any of your questions. So: First of all, this isn't Shea Stadium footage you seeing here... I hope we soon be able to enjoy the real thing... This footage was shot June 25 1971 at the De Doelen in Rotterdam, Holland [during the first world tour] and I've bought it directly from the guy who shot it! It's the best quality out of silent 8mm film I've ever seen! The main body work [editing] was done by me some time ago, using about half of the 8mm film I then had in my hands, although I've put the last touches just recently. Meanwhile, I finally manage to purchase one more reel from the same concert (negotiations lasted more than 2 years) although it remains 8mm format. I may transfer it in the future full professionally (along with the first one) putting out a much better result [and synch] but as I said, this will be in the -far- future, as it already had cost me a lot of time and money! Of course then, I'd be gladly offering a re-edited version to a possible official release [to be included as an intro to the main theme, or whatever] if I'm asked to... Well see... For now, let's all celebrate the 40th Anniversary Of Funk with this 'Monumental Funk II'. Enjoy!

If you return me, to my home port, I will kiss you mother earth. Take me back now, take me back now, To the port of my birth.
