Math Help - Algebra 2 - Advanced Equations

Math Help - Algebra 2 - Advanced Equations

from sudokookdotcom on November 05, 2007
Duration: 145
To access the complete lesson on this topic, go to http://www.yourteacher.com. Students learn that when solving a polynomial equation such as (x + 1)(x -- 8) = 10, the equation cannot be split up into two separate equations as a first step, because it is not set equal to zero. So the first step in this problem is to F.O.I.L. on the left side of the equation to get x^2 -- 7x -- 8 = 10, then subtract 10 from both sides to get x^2 -- 7x -- 18 = 0, then factor the left side to get (x -- 9)(x + 2) = 0, then split things up into two separate equations: x -- 9 = 0 and x + 2 = 0, and solve each equation from here to get x = 9 or x = -2.

Math Help - Algebra - Solving Polynomial Equations

Math Help - Algebra - Solving Polynomial Equations

from sudokookdotcom on October 25, 2007
Duration: 170
To access the complete lesson on this topic, go to www.yourteacher.com. Students learn that the first step in solving polynomial equations is to set the given equation equal to zero, the next step is to factor, and the final step is to set each of the resulting factors equal to zero and solve each equation. This process usually yields more than one solution, so the answer can be written as a solution set. Some of the problems involve factoring a trinomial into two binomials, and some of the problems involve factoring a binomial as the difference of two squares.
