Aero-TV Talks About The Airshow Biz With Ed Hamill

Not All Air Force Reserve Pilots Fly Fighters... During last summer's Ocean City Airshow, Aero-TV got the chance to sit down with the best and brightest of the personnel and performers that made this first-time show a truly outstanding event. It was Ocean City, MD s first ever airshow and was initiated to kick off the town s 2008 summer season on June 10-11, 2008, adding a new signature attraction to Ocean City s roster of annual events. Military aircraft demonstrations, low altitude flyovers and civilian aerobatic performances took place over the Ocean City beachfront from noon to 4 pm each day. The airshow was visible along the majority of the Boardwalk creating an inspiring experience for visitors while they enjoyed the hospitality of Ocean City s beach and attractions. One of the standouts among an impressive roster of expert performances was a stirring routine performed by Veteran Pilot (in more ways than one), Ed Hamill, flying on behalf of the USAFR. While a number of the hottest Air Force Reserve pilots may get to fly the sleek new F-22 Raptor; Ed Hamill, a member of the Air Force Reserve, uses his Air Force Reserve Biplane to tell the story of air show performance trends through the last century as he lives his dream. In addition to his full time career as an airshow pilot and businessman, Hamill is also a Major in the US Air Force Reserve. This allows him to continue to serve his country, instructing in F-16s at Luke AFB, Arizona. A proven combat veteran flight lead, he is experienced in flying fighters (F-16s) and also has management and supervisory skills. Hamill was recognized as a Distinguished Graduate among his Air Force F-16 training class as well as a Right Stuff Award Winner. He has also received several Top Gun Awards, and awards for Outstanding Achievement and Academics, among others. Hamill volunteers as a speaker and mentor at various venues, including KidVenture, which attracts thousands of participants young and old alike with its hands-on, educational and fun aviation-based events during the annual EAA AirVenture Convention. Ed's efforts (as well as those of the rest of the accomplished performer line-up), turned this first rendition of the OCAS into a must-repeat event. The Ocean City folks and airshow organizer Bryan Lilley have committed to 2009's event already... be sure to check this show next year on June 6-7, 2009! This is a signature aviation event, said Lilley. The OC Air Show (is) the first major waterfront show in the Mid Atlantic region offering easy access from Baltimore, Washington DC and Philadelphia. The KC-10 Extender Shows Aero-TV It's Multi-Mission Tanker Role (Part 3)

The KC-10 Extender Shows Aero-TV It's Multi-Mission Tanker Role (Part 3)

Cool: A KC-10 Flight Engineer Explains Life Aboard A Multi-Mission Tanker One of the highlights of the 2008 Oshkosh Fly-In was the chance to get up close and personal with all manner of military aircraft -- the same birds that can be called upon at a moment's notice to serve and protect this nation... While the fighters get most of the glory and the bombers get some notice here and there, rarely do we here about the tankers. Take the KC-10 for instance... According to the US Air Force, the KC-10 'Extender' is an Air Mobility Command advanced tanker and cargo aircraft designed to provide increased global mobility for US armed forces. Although the KC-10's primary mission is aerial refueling, it can combine the tasks of a tanker and cargo aircraft by refueling fighters and simultaneously carry the fighter support personnel and equipment on overseas deployments. The KC-10 is also capable of transporting litter and ambulatory patients using patient support pallets during aeromedical evacuations. The KC-10 can transport up to 75 people and nearly 170,000 pounds of cargo a distance of about 4,400 miles unrefueled. In addition to the three main DC-10 wing fuel tanks, the KC-10 has three large fuel tanks under the cargo floor, one under the forward lower cargo compartment, one in the center wing area and one under the rear compartment. Combined, the capacity of the six tanks carry more than 356,000 pounds of fuel - almost twice as much as the KC-135 Stratotanker. Using either an advanced aerial refueling boom, or a hose and drogue centerline refueling system, the KC-10 can refuel a wide variety of US and allied military aircraft within the same mission. The aircraft is equipped with lighting for night operations. The KC-10's boom operator controls refueling operations through a digital, fly-by wire system. Sitting in the rear of the aircraft, the operator can see the receiver aircraft through a wide window. During boom refueling operations, fuel is transferred to the receiver at a maximum rate of 1,100 gallons (4,180 liters) per minute; the hose and drogue refueling maximum rate is 470 gallons per minute. The Automatic Load Alleviation System and Independent Disconnect System greatly enhances safety and facilitates air refueling. The KC-10 can be air-refueled by a KC-135 or another KC-10A to increase its delivery range. The large cargo-loading door can accept most air forces' fighter unit support equipment. Powered rollers and winches inside the cargo compartment permit moving heavy loads. The cargo compartment can accommodate loads ranging from 27 pallets to a mix of 17 pallets and 75 passengers. Since Sept. 11, 2001, KC-10s have played a prominent role in the on-going Global War on Terrorism. The KC-10 has flown more than 350 missions guarding U.S. skies as a part of Operation Noble Eagle. During operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom, KC-10s have flown more than 1,390 missions delivering critical air refueling support to numerous joint and coalition receiver aircraft. Aero-TV Looks At Zedasoft's 'Sim-In-A-Box' Mobile Training Strategy

Aero-TV Looks At Zedasoft's 'Sim-In-A-Box' Mobile Training Strategy

from Ghettoking on September 29, 2008
Duration: 460
Take Your Training Right To Where the Action Is Training is a constant issue in the hard-fought (literally) world of the combat pilot. In the areas where pilots are ready for action, there are usually a scarcity of the support systems that they might have known in more civilized locales. There's certainly little room for some of the most complex training devices and sims in the vicinity of an active combat zone.... but that may no longer be true due to a novel approach by an innovative military simulator company by the name of Zedasoft. ZedaSoft is a 'spin-off' from RIVA Technologies... which made the change in 2000 to focus exclusively on the simulation and visualization marketplace. RIVA had been providing simulation software development since its inception in 1993 for companies such as Lockheed Martin, Raytheon Training, Federal Aviation Administration, Silicon Graphics and SportSimulation, Inc. In 1996 RIVA also began producing interactive learning products on CDROM and web based testing products to the commercial markets. These products have become very successful and represent the state-of-the art in the web based e-learning industry. Based on this success, it was important for RIVA to focus on these products, but at the same time make sure focus and attention was applied in continuing its support for the simulation software clients it developed. In response to this need, ZedaSoft was spun off as a separate company to serve this marketplace and provide dedicated resources to its clientele. Though many of the technical resources still exchange technologies and ideas between the companies, the management focus for each company is dedicated to serving their specific industry. The Portable Simulator Desktop (PSD) concept alluded to, above, is an all-in-one aircraft simulator desktop control and computer system in a single travel case. The PSD is ideal for deployment training and portable aggressor stations. Our CBA of Simulation software is included with each unit, which can be tailored to simulate your desired cockpit systems. The entire system can be set-up in minutes and includes options for three 20" LCD visual scene channels or large 30" LCD?s for both the out-the-window and instrument displays. Pricing starts at $50,000 US per unit and supports a number of current fighter aircraft such as the F-16, FA-18 and F-22. We Admit It... We Get a Lump In Our Throats Over This Stuff There can't be a patriotic aviator anywhere in America immune to the "Lump In Your Throat" sensation created by the extraordinary sights, sounds and aura of a USAF Heritage Flight. The USAF Heritage Flight program was established in 1997 to commemorate the Air Force's 50th anniversary. It involves today's state-of-the-art fighters flying in close formation with World War II, Korean and Vietnam era fighters such as the P-51 Mustang and the F-86 Sabre. The flight's mission is to safely and proudly display the evolution of U.S. Air Force airpower and to support the Air Force's recruiting and retention efforts. According to the USAF, there are 21 pilots in this program. The modern Air Force fighters are piloted by the seven Air Combat Command (ACC) single-ship demonstration team pilots and the vintage warbirds are piloted by 12 civilians, including former Air Force, Army, Navy, and Marine pilots, and several former astronauts. In addition, two active duty F-4 pilots and an F-22A pilot joined the program in 2005. During the 2008 Ocean City AirShow, ANN's Jim Campbell got a chance to sit down with one of the USAF's finest... an F-15 Jock by the name of Sam Joplin, who gave us some inside info on what the heritage Flight Program means to one of the men who flies for it. Beachfront Airshow Gives Summer Crowds Plenty To See The "All-American Airshow" is a wonderful concept that is as much a part of the summer experience as a day at the beach... and the OCAS '08 event -- the first of many we're told -- was a bit of both. Interactive displays and exhibits were offered to the public on the streets surrounding Show Center. The Ocean City Municipal Airport also hosted an open house in conjunction with the OC Air Show on Monday, June 9, where performing aircraft were viewed up close along with other aircraft. The first event went spectacularly well. In addition to the open house, the show boasted a Blue Angels Flyover, performances by the GEICO Skytypers, a USAF Heritage flight, USAF F-16 Viper Demo Team, USAF F-15 Eagle Demo Team, USAF Reserve Biplane, Embry Riddle Mono-plane, The Yak Attack, C-17/C-5 Flyovers, a NASA P-3 Flyover and many other major attractions... including Golden Knight landings right on the beach. Battling the heat, more than 2,500 aviation enthusiasts came out to walk the open house's flight line for a closer look at the performing aircraft as they arrived and despite some occasional hassles with ramp personnel (the ONLY low note for the entire event), spectators were also able to visit with pilots and crews. General admission was free since the show could be viewed from the beach and boardwalk, while premium viewing opportunities and club house V.I.P. chalets were available to businesses and public attendees. The outcome was obviously successful as the Ocean City folks and airshow organizer Bryan Lilley have committed to 2009's event already... be sure to check this show next year on June 6-7, 2009! This is a signature aviation event, said Lilley. The OC Air Show (is) the first major waterfront show in the Mid Atlantic region offering easy access from Baltimore, Washington DC and Philadelphia. Video and audio flight recording data from the last minutes of a USAF F-16CG plane being shot down by the Serbian Air Defense. This downing of an American military aircraft, returning from a bombing task focused on the wider Novi Sad area occurred at night, on May 2, 1999, during the war between the Serbs and NATO.The pilot, Lt. Col. David Goldfein, ejected safely and was promptly evacuated in a standard US Army procedure, by a C-SAR team. The initial claim that the aircraft suffered a mechanical failure was later superseded by official sources as well as by the result of independent research, including the analysis of the recording presented here. Everything indicates that the downing of this aircraft was due to a heavy damage caused by a detonation of at least one surface-to-air missile exploding in the proximity of it.
