Our Five Favorite Hunk of Junk Spaceships
from Cinematical on October 21, 2009

By: John Gholson Their engines whine; their walls creak. These spaceships may look like antiques from the future, but many pack more punch under the hood than they let on. Never judge a book by its cover, and never judge a spaceship by its rust-holes and sputtering warp drive. What space-faring rattletraps make the cut in our top five list of "hunk of junk" spaceships? 5. EAGLE V from Spaceballs The most impressive thing about the Eagle V is its amazingly pristine (and retro-hideous) 1973 Winnebago chassis. Piloted by Captain Lone Starr and his Mawg co-pilot, Barf, the Eagle V is a ship-for-hire last seen crash landing on the surface of MoonaVega. I would say it was last seen on the recent Spaceballs cartoon series, but that would imply that people actually watched it. FEATURES: Interior shag carpeting, perfect for camping. DRAWBACKS: Screen door, chemical toilet, small fuel tank. 4. THUNDER ROAD from The Explorers The only ship on this list named after a Bruce Springsteen song, this is the vessel that carried Ethan Hawke, River Phoenix, and Jason Presson into outer space where they made first contact with a rubbery alien who could lip-sync to "Yakety Yak". Higher forms of intelligence, indeed. This bold trio built a craptacular capsule out of a rusty tilt-a-whirl, a garbage can, a busted TV, and Charles Foster Kane's sled, and somehow, not only managed to get it into space without imminent death, but impressed Dick Miller in the process. The vast loneliness of space caused so much psychological damage amongst the children that Phoenix OD'ed years later, Presson went off-the-grid, and Ethan Hawke married Uma Thurman. FEATURES: Bubble-based technology provides the ship with its own oxygen supply. DRAWBACKS: Bubble-based technology does not prevent the ship from sinking into the ocean at the end of the film. Grand Bahama Island - The Bahamas Weekly News Team brings you an exclusive video intervew with Lawrence (Larry) Wood, specialist in the study of sea turtle and member of the team on the Explorers Club Flag Expedition project at Peterson's Cay National Park where they are mapping the surrounding reef system as part of the 2008 Coral Reef Initiative. This project began on location in August 2008 and was funded by the Grand Bahama Development Company. . Listen to Mr. Wood as he discusses the importance of the conservation of sea turtles, and shares his enthusiasm around his research on the Hawksbill turtle. A graduate of Florida Atlantic University s undergraduate and Masters programs, Mr. Wood has been working with sea turtles in South Florida for over 19 years. He has had an interest in the study of amphibians and reptiles since an early age, and his fascination with turtles brought him to south Florida in the late 1980 s. Since then, he has contributed to Florida s marine turtle protection efforts in many ways, including the establishment of standardized nesting surveys in northern Palm Beach County and the development of sea turtle rehabilitation facilities and educational programs. He currently conducts the only in-water population study of Hawksbill turtles in the continental United States . He has served as a spokesman for sea turtle and marine conservation for the local media and numerous domestic and international documentaries, and regularly leads eco-tours to remote locations in Central America to support marine turtle conservation projects. He is a member of several professional organizations and the author or co-author of numerous scientific and professional articles and technical reports. Grand Bahama Island - The Bahamas Weekly presents a video featuring Day 2 highlights of the International Explorer's Club Flag Expedition of mapping the reef system's around Petersen's Cay National Park, Grand Bahama Island. You will hear from the Expedition Leader and Marine Biologist, Dr. Stefan Harzen. This video was shot by Grand Bahamian resident, and award winning Canadian cinematographer, Paul Mockler. Stay tuned to The Bahamas Weekly for upcoming interviews with the members of the Expedition Team. Why Grand Bahama was chosen for this expedition: The primary reason is that the lead researchers Dr. Stefan Harzen and Dr. Barbara Brunnick have conducted or participated in various research projects in The Bahamas for more than 10 years. As such they have extensive knowledge of Grand Bahama and its ecosystems having explored the underwater environment around the island on several previous trips. The waters around Grand Bahama, like in most areas of the archipelago are particularly well suited to create maps of underwater habitats due to clear visibility. The site was chosen for two reasons: first, the reef is situated within an existing National Park and generating a detailed map provides direct and immediate benefits to those responsible for managing it. Secondly, the reef complex is large enough to be highly significant and small enough so it can be mapped in the time period available. In order to carry out the highly detailed environmental mapping required by the GBPA Dr. Harzen and Dr. Brunnick developed their own biodiversity mapping system combing GIS technology with biodiversity software and ground-truthing for the first ever biodiversity mapping of this kind of a coral reef in The Bahamas and the wider Caribbean region, and possibly the first time that this biodiversity mapping has been carried out on a coral reef anywhere in the world. To further apply the biodiversity mapping technology developed by Dr. Harzen and Dr. Brunnick, DEVCO had the foresight to host this groundbreaking environmental project.
