From : Directors Notes
It s with complete unashamedness that I admit we discovered this week s guest Dan Schneidkraut from our well mined source of the Filmstock Film Festival when El Vez spotted Daddy s Time, Part two of Dan s Seeking Wellness: Suffering Through Four Movements quadrilogy of films. My interest in the films only grew when all four parts arrived and I discovered that it was going to take some work on my part to fully engage with their themes. Dan joins us to discuss challenging cinema, the strengths of video and a lifetime ban from the 48hr Film Challenge. From : DVblog
Touch My Body (Oliver Laric version) (2008, 40.9MB, 4:18 min) No Mariah (Caspar Stracke version) (2008, 52MB, 4:03 min) OK, pay attention! This is complicated. Ms Carey (or her corporate minders) release a video, which if she did have a significant part to play in it shows such a staggering lack of self esteem that a kind of dark despair begins to envelop me. Artist Oliver Laric remixes it, removing all the backgrounds and replacing it with green, for ease of a certain species of remixing. Marisa Olson posts a piece on this on Rhizome, to which Brittany, of this manor, takes exception (with a degree of justification, I think). There follows what is actually an interesting and nuanced exchange of views. Then Caspar Stracke posts the second of our videos MTAA make a very funny joke.

 From : 'GPOD'
This is a sneak peek at the soundtrack that will be used in a performance at Terra Extremitas, put on by the Foolish People. The script and soundtrack are based on some of the eschatological themes in Fallen Nation, and will serve as a bridge between that and a future project with the Foolish People, and many other creatives you may or may not have heard of The voices you will hear in this soundtrack will be the voices inside the actor s head. The rest you will just have to imagine- or better yet, get your ass to the event. Also, after the Terra Extremitas event in Amsterdam, we will be providing you with a version of this soundtrack with the actors lines added- which may or may not have video, depending on how the filming at the event goes. Enjoy! Soundtrack Credits: Writing: James Curcio, Jason Stackhouse. Production Art Direction: James Curcio. Music: P. Emerson Williams (Choronzon, Veil of Thorns), James Curcio, Scott Landes (Collide, Mankind is Obsolete), Jon Siren (Mankind is Obsolete, Hate Dept). From : DVblog
Pop Mantra Video Documentation #4 (2008, 51.7MB, 5:17 min) Pop Mantra Video Documentation #7 (2008, 50.5MB, 5:41 min) I like admire Curt Cloninger for his steadfastness of belief in both his religion his artistic work. He s also one of the best writers about new media around at the moment. In both theory practice he s curious, inventive, knowledgable, quirky and passionate. Unlike many in this sphere he s also not afraid to think aloud in public, to take risks. Even, (quelle horreur!), to risk appearing uncool. Recently he s been making work away from the web, some of it performative very interestingly so. Here ( I stress what you see here is the documentation, not the piece itself -a fine, but important, distinction) he repeatedly sings plays a single phrase from a popular song, in this instance Radiohead s Karma Police, for several hours. For me there are number of interesting resonances - minimalism, shamanism, the kinds of test that occur in many religious belief systems, a losing, dissolving of the self (In additon to the eponymous mantra ,there s an echo too, I think, of Sufism); but also there is the straightforward investigation*** of the mechanics of playing, of performing ( there s a fractal quality to the rather symmetric crystalline structure of popular song that makes this kind of extracting both possible immediately approachable -it s a world familiar enough to welcome us in.) The two extracts are from different ends of this marathon ( selecting typing that word just conjured another association - the dance marathons of the twenties thirties). I find this work fascinating. Fascinating affecting too. *** It s almost always a laughable misuse of the word to say investigation in an art-speak context. Here it seems correct natural.

 From : YouTube :: Tag // newyork
Dubbed by the press "the nation's best-known underground band," New York No-Wave ensemble Sonic Youth has spent two decades exploring music's frontiers in influential albums like "Daydream Nation" and "Goo". In this German-produced documentary, filmmaker Christoph Dreher listens to band members Thurston Moore, Lee Ranaldo, Kim Gordon and Steve Shelley as they discuss past controversies, their melding of music with the graphic arts, their much-publicized signing with Geffen Records and the notorious theft of their gear - including 16 specially modified guitars - while on tour in 1998. Featuring clips from countless music videos, concert footage and interviews with musician Blixa Bargeld, composer Glen Branca and producer Jim O'Rourke. Sonic Youth, initially comprising of guitarist / vocalists Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo, guitarist / bassist / vocalist Kim Gordon and drummer Richard Edson, were formed in New York City in 1981. A product of the No-Wave music scene of the late 1970s, the group had their roots in abrasive, experimental music, with Moore and Ranaldo having previously worked with the experimental composer Glenn Branca. The band were joined in 1985 by drummer Steve Shelley, and have now recorded 14 albums together, as well as many side and solo projects. Their work has been consistently challenging and innovative, and they are widely regarded as one of the most intriguing and influential bands of their time.
