Failure to Do This Harms Relationships
from Bigg Success June 16, 2008
Have you ever had a service company just show up at your door even though they told you someone would call first? Have you ever had a co-worker promise they would get information to you but then drop the ball? Have you ever asked a sales person to get back to you on a proposal but then they never did? What was your impression of that company, co-worker, or sales person when they didn t follow-through? It probably wasn t favorable. You realize that you can t count on them to do what they say they ll do. Follow-through: an essential element to building your personal brand. A brand carries with it the promise of expected benefits. Every time a promise is not delivered, the brand suffers. Promises are easy to make, but not as easy to keep. But if you want to build trust, you have to make good on your promises. Say what you ll do, then do what you say. Author unknown This separates people who achieve bigg things from people who don t. Even if it s just a little thing, you risk leaving the impression that you don t follow through. We often have the best of intentions, but it s impossible to judge someone on their intentions. So we do the only thing we can do we base our opinions of people on whether they deliver on their promises. Be careful not to over-promise. If we surprise someone, we should surprise them in a good way by doing more than we say we ll do. It s not good to disappoint them by doing less than what we say or not doing it at all. Today s bigg action item Develop a system to record every promise you make. Do whatever works for you, whether that is an old paper system or something using new technology. One simple way to do this is Jott. Whenever you make a promise, just call and leave a message about what you need to do. Jott will send you an e-mail or text message reminder. That coupled with your personal calendar can keep you on track. Here s the best part Jott is a FREE service. There are two keys to making any system like this work: Budget a little extra time after each activity. This will allow you to write down or record anything you promised. Make it a habit. Really focus on using your system every day for the next two weeks. Or you could do what George does. Mary-Lynn reminds him of his promises. Speaking of which, he has to go pick up the dry cleaning that was ready last week! Subscribe to The Bigg Success Show in iTunes. Subscribe to the Bigg Success feed. Why Work Life Balance Doesn’t Work
from Bigg Success: The How-To, Can-Do Place For People On The Move May 31, 2008
An increasing number of people have given up on the balancing act. They have found that it s impossible to draw a line in the sand and divide their lives into two parts. We only have one life to live, so why complicate it by trying to reach our goals in two separate worlds as if one doesn t have anything to do with the other one? You might find that it pays to NOT try to balance your life! Thus the emerging trend of work life integration. This concept is still in its early stages, but more and more people are finding that it works better for them than trying to keep things in balance. Work life integration is all about flowing seamlessly from one area to the other. Your spouse may say something that helps you at work. Your co-workers may give you insight for things at home. Pay attention to all the important people and priorities in your life all the time, rather than thinking that you need to segment them. A paradigm shift That s the essence of work life integration. It requires a paradigm shift thinking about your life a different way. Instead of putting pressure on yourself to be great in two separate areas of your life, focus on doing your best in your single life. Remove the limitations that you ve placed on yourself. Limitation #1 Place Work only occurs at the office; personal only occurs at home. We shouldn t mix the two. It s how we ve been trained to think. The problem is it doesn t work! Limitation #2 Time Many people think they of work as the activities they do during certain times of the day (e.g. 9 to 5). Then they live their personal lives. It may make sense for you to adjust your schedule, depending upon the flexibility your employer allows. A recent study by Hudson, a leading international recruiting firm, showed that nearly one-third of the people surveyed ranked flexibility as their #1 priority in considering a new job offer. Limitation #3 Daily reconciliation We think that we need to achieve balance every day. In reality, sometimes work demands more of us; at other times, our personal life needs the most attention. Give yourself permission to focus on what s most important. Don t worry about whether everything is balanced every day. If you think about it, work life balance is sort of an unnatural expectation. Work life integration is more congruent with how most of us actually live. It s just more natural. How we use work life integration Here at Bigg Success, we understand this concept very well because we live it. We work together, often at home. We play together. We often get to travel together, combining some pleasure with the primary purpose of the trip. We also find that a lot of personal conversations lead to ideas like the one you re reading now. Of course, not all spouses can (or should) work together. Do what works for you. The good news is that, according to the Chartered Management Institute, there will be a blurring of boundaries between work and family because more and more of us will be working virtually. Our bigg quote today comes from Karl Weick. Simply pushing harder within the old boundaries will not do. So pull yourself together integrate your lives. Next time, we ll discuss four things to pay attention to that pay off. Until then, here s to your bigg success! Subscribe to The Bigg Success Show in iTunes. Subscribe to the Bigg Success feed. Can "Atom" Bomb? Imran's Law of Expectations
from Imran Anwar's In My Humble Opinion April 23, 2008
Sharon Gaudlin's article in ComputerWorld April 3, 2008 begins: "With Intel Corp. betting so heavily on the mobile Internet device market exploding in the next several years, industry analysts are wondering if the fledgling business can live up to the expectations." Intel has named the technology/chips in question ATOM. So, I guess, the question is, will Atom bomb in the marketplace? I think some of the comments from analysts like Charles King suggest that might be the case. "For a market now in its infancy to grow that fast in just five to 10 years would be an enormous growth curve - one that may not be realistic, especially with so many people satisfied with today's iPhones and other smart phones, said Charles King, an analyst at Pund-IT Inc. in Hayward, Calif." I think King's comments are an example of Imran's Law of Expectations: "Any technology can be sufficiently overhyped to be perceived as failing to meet expectations, even if it is commercially successful in the market." Yes, Intel (and others) will overhype this chip, this technology and this market demand. But the market 5 years from now will be far different from current form factors, so using those as benchmarks is surely a silly way to analyze the potential for this technology. The market may be smaller than Intel's hype, it may be bigger than analysts guesses, but it will be BIG. Big enough to be commercially successful. Five years ago people using handheld PDAs could not have foreseen millions of iPhones in people's pockets today. As Apple readies its iPhone 2 device for release shortly, with even more functionality, it will be even more likely to hit its target of number of units sold. I can only imagine what general magic Apple, and its many copy-cat product designers will do when Intel's Atom and others' even more exciting technologies become available to them to design the next generation of cool new products. (Update: April 23, 2008: As I was writing these lines, Steve Jobs was busy negotiating the purchase of PA Semi, a StrongARM design-based chip-designer firm. It will mean far more incredible machines from Apple. Will it be a blow to intel's Atom? Yes. Will Atom bomb? Probably not, as there will be plenty of Apple-copycats out there needing chips.)
