Live from SDCC: 'Watchmen' Invades Comic Con!
from Cinematical July 25, 2008
Filed under: Action, Warner Brothers, Fandom, Exhibition, Movie Marketing, Comic/Superhero/Geek, ComicCon The highly-anticipated Watchmen panel is just about to get underway. Elisabeth will be back later with a complete, detailed report on the panel, but for now here's the early recap straight from the floor: Hall H is absolutely bonkers right now; thousands of people have packed in for this one. Apparently you can win an X-Box 360 by texting the word 'Watchmen' to 58671. Zack Snider is present with his entire cast: Malin Akerman, Carla Gugino, Billy Crudup, Jackie Earle Haley, Matthew Goode, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Patrick Wilson and Dave Gibbons. A brief history on the project, last year's Con and the recently-released trailer. Dave Gibbons talks about what it was like to see their vision come to life. Impressed by the attention to detail throughout. Clip showing the non-PG aspect of the film; ridiculous extended trailer -- some of which included Dr. Manhattan kicking lots of ass in Vietnam. Elisabeth texts me to say, "Wow, that was awesome!" And now the fan questions have begun ... Who's your favorite Watchmen character to Snyder (surprise! he likes them all!), what's it like to play so and so, etc ... More questions on the mature tone and whether that's what we should expect from the future of comic book movies. Is the movie too dark? That's up to you ... Random Unrelated Update: Joss Whedon is in our hotel lobby right now -- Cinematical's Scott Weinberg introduces himself by saying, "Excuse me sir, I don't know if you know this, but you're Joss Whedon." Whedon replies, "That's right, I am!" Love it! Scott then asks for a photo with Joss fast, so Joss turns around and says, "Hey Nate, can you take this for us." Yup, it's Nathan Fillion. Weinberg just had his geek moment of the day. More Watchmen in a bit ... folks are still asking questions (what inspired that, how hard was it to do this, etc ...) Panel's over -- they showed the footage one more time -- and now Weinberg is heading over to the Watchmen interviews. Elisabeth will be back later with much more ... Permalink | Email this | Comments

SDCC Bites: 'Robocop' Remake, 'Saw V' Trailer, 'Wolverine' Footage and More!
from Cinematical July 25, 2008
Filed under: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Fandom, Exhibition, Movie Marketing, Comic/Superhero/Geek, ComicCon We came, we saw ... Con kicked our ass. Here are some quick tidbits of interest: The first trailer for Saw V was released in conjunction with that film's panel here last night. It's over at Yahoo!, but thanks to the magic that is embed players, you fine folks can see if after the jump. Yes, Jigsaw is back ... but this time something's gotta be done about his kids, Marty! Wait ... back up ... puzzles, traps, blood -- that's more like it. MGM has confirmed via press release that Darren Aronofsky will officially helm a Robocop remake. And, no, I looked out my window and pigs were not flying. Also, in the same press release, they noted that Brett Ratner will be directing God of War. There's a potential for awesomeness in either project, but it's still too early to tell. The two Red Sonja posters unveiled during the panel yesterday (see our report here) hit the Cinematical inbox this morning, and, yes, I believe it is true what they say about redheads: They like to lick blood off of swords. See both above. Wolverine footage screened yesterday during the Fox panel, and it was pretty awesome. Dynamite teaser moment: Wolverine telling Sabretooth: "I'm gonna cut your goddamn head off!" Everything I'm hearing about this flick is that it's dark, sadistic and wicked ... and I cannot flippin' wait. IGN has the Punisher: War Zone footage from last night's panel. I heard the Twilight panel was absolutely off the charts as far as tween female geekdom goes. Never have so many mothers and daughters gone so ballistic in one area at the same time -- I'm not sure if anyone called Guinness, but some sort of record was definitely broken. We missed the paltry G.I. Joe panel, but JoBlo has a pretty good rundown of it in case you're interested. No footage was shown, just a slideshow of stuff we've already seen and maybe one or two action shots. Last but not least, The Masters of the Web panel was a good time. This was my first ever Con panel (as a panelist) and luckily I didn't throw up or accidentally spit on AICN's Quint (who sat next to me).I'd call that a success. SDCC: Fox Presents 'Max Payne' and 'The Day the Earth Stood Still'
from Cinematical July 25, 2008
Filed under: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Mystery & Suspense, Fandom, Exhibition, DIY/Filmmaking, Movie Marketing, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Remakes and Sequels, ComicCon I'm not exactly sure how a scheduled block of round-table interviews turned into a half-organized two-headed press conference, but that's pretty much how it went down in this particular convention hall room. (Sounds like I'm complaining, but I'm just trying to give you a taste of the chaos that goes on here: Nothing's on time, nobody seems to have the right answers, and a lot of time is simply spent ... waiting. (It's fun AND frustrating!) But to be fair, it's not every day you sit in a room populated by Mark Wahlberg, Keanu Reeves, Jennifer Connelly, and Mila Kunis (among others) -- but there we were! (We, um, weren't allowed to take photos -- at a press conference. Don't ask me.) After much waiting and friendly nerd-banter among patient movie folks, the cast and director of Max Payne walked in to share their thoughts on their upcoming videogame adaptation. Mr. Wahlberg was quick to note that, while he wasn't much of a game player, he was very excited about playing a kick-ass action hero. Interviewers wanted to know why the actor chose a popcorn movie after The Departed, and one even poked a little fun: "So you won't be running away from the wind in this one?" (A cute quip, but a little classless.) When the questioners focused on director John Moore, he was his typically enthusiastic self, promising fans a gritty good time that delivers the mayhem. And just as the adorable Mila Kunis was about to explain how her character is actually a kick-ass assassin-type...Continue reading SDCC: Fox Presents 'Max Payne' and 'The Day the Earth Stood Still' Permalink | Email this | Comments

SDCC Panel: Robert Rodriguez's 'Red Sonja'
from Cinematical July 24, 2008
Filed under: Action, Festival Reports, Fandom, Exhibition, DIY/Filmmaking, Comic/Superhero/Geek, ComicCon Above: Rose McGowan licking blood off a sword The room was packed for the Red Sonja panel today featuring Robert Rodriguez, Rose McGowan and director Doug Aaroniokoski, and images of Rose McGowan in that skimpy metal bikini were everywhere (what you see above was one of around 2,000 t-shirts handed out. Below are easy-to-read notes on this particular panel: -- Red Sonja will hit theaters in the fourth quarter of 2009 (one imagines for Christmas) -- Robert Rodriguez is acting as a "hands on" producer, and will co-direct a good chunk of the flick. Not only is he doing this for Red Sonja, but he's also negotiating to produce a new Conan film. It seems as if they would eventually (if both are popular enough) cross promote between films. -- The tone will be darker, like the book, and when asked if it would be R rated, Rodriguez said, "My name is double 'R'!" --Also on tone and scope, McGowan (who's quite lively and quick-witted in person) said it's "hard, cold, dirty and bloody." And that she's looking forward to "taking a big giant sword and killing a lot of people." -- Training is already underway, and McGowan is working with the same swords experts who helped out on Matrix and Ninja Assassin. -- Rodriguez also admitted that Barbarella is officially off, and that Red Sonja has taken its place. He said financing of $70 million did come through from Germany for a shoot next year, but he's obligated to shoot something else for Miramax. He's negotiating right now to direct a "huge summer movie" -- but he wouldn't say which. -- On the character, Rose McGowan said: "I will not have a mullet!" The crowd cheered. -- Red Sonja will be shot on location (scouting now) and will use some green screen. -- Asked who should star in the new Conan, RR shouted: "Danny Trejo!" -- On Machete becoming a film, RR said they have plans to turn it into a Mexploitation triple feature disc (and somewhere on that disc will be a trailer for a sequel to Planet Terror.) -- On Sin City 2, Frank Miller has finished writing the script, but no one knows whether or not that's going to happen with each working on different projects. P.S. For those who think Rodriguez and McGowan aren't a couple anymore, check out this candid snapshot (taken right before RR kissed RM on the forehead). Gallery from the panel below. My opinion: It looks pretty hot, and while I've bashed McGowan in the past, I'm willing to give her a chance to kick some ass here. This will be her time to shine. Film Blog Group Hug: The 'Twilight' Edition
from Cinematical July 23, 2008
Filed under: Casting, Fandom, Exhibition, Newsstand, Movie Marketing Boy, you miss a few weeks work to move 2,000 miles, and you fall behind on all kinds of things going on in the world of Twilight. All you Twilighters have, no doubt, been keeping up to speed with everything that's been going on out there -- you're making plans to attend Breaking Dawn parties, planning what you're going to wear, entering giveaway contests, and getting your Twilight-inspired costumes put together (who knew there were so many varieties of vampire fangs out there?). I know, you have it much more together than I do on all the Twilight madness, but hey, I've been on the road with four kids, a dog and a cat all crammed into a 1998 Ford Windstar, moving back to Seattle, so I'm just now getting around to catching up. So here's a rundown of all-things Twilight for you -- in case you, like me, have been having a busy summer. News Bites: Murray Flies Through the Air & 'Roger Dodger' Reunion
from Cinematical July 23, 2008
Filed under: Casting, Exhibition, Home Entertainment We've seen Bill Murray do a lot over the years, but have we ever seen him as a tried and true, REAL stuntman? Jam! reports that the actor has signed on to parachute from a plane for an appearance at the Chicago Air and Water Show that's taking place next month. If planes buzzing about isn't something that appeals to you, maybe Murray descending from the sky will? He will perform a tandem jump with the Golden Knights skydiving team on August 15. That's a way to get new viewers -- come watch celebrities fall from the sky! Meanwhile... Are you a Roger Dodger fan? If you haven't seen this flick, you should run out and rent it, pronto. Campbell Scott stars as an uncle who takes his young nephew (Jesse Eisenberg) out on a night on the town to teach him the ways of male adulthood. While at a bar, they come across Elizabeth Berkley and Jennifer Beals, who spend some time with the pair. Now EW has found out that the two ladies are reuniting on the final season of The L Word. Instead of playing friends who do what they can to help young Nick become a man, the Showgirls star will play the straight girl who got away from Beals' Bette in college. Oh, the possibilities! Hiroshi Fuji: Kaeru / SITE Santa Fe Seventh International Biennial, Lucky Number Seven
from VernissageTV art tv July 22, 2008
Hiroshi Fuji is a social activist. Fuji creates installations, performances, and events that focus on community. He uses materials deemed useless or valueless by society – such as empty water bottles, and old toys – to create works of art. One of his projects is Kaekko , a project that simulates the model of a bazaar: Children exchange their unwanted toys, creating a new market and new values for formerly worthless items. For Lucky Number Seven , SITE Santa Fe Seventh International Biennial, he created Kaeru . As Hiroshi Fuji states: Kaeru starts with a bazaar where children bring unwanted toys to exchange. Local people involve themselves in making artworks from the materials brought to the bazaar. Those works are the interwoven with elements at key places in Santa Fe. This video shows Kaeru at the Museum of International Folk Art on Museum Hill in Santa Fe, and the Santa Fe Opera Parking Lot. Other venues are Fine Arts for Children Teens and the National Dance Institute of New Mexico. 'Fanboys' to Screen Comic-Con and Hit Theaters in September!
from Cinematical July 21, 2008
Filed under: Comedy, Fandom, Exhibition, Newsstand, Comic/Superhero/Geek, ComicCon Some very exciting news has just hit the net (though it's been quietly talked about for a good while now): Fanboys will screen at San Diego Comic Con later this week, on Thursday, July 24, and will apparently hit theaters this September. Finally! First, for the Con news: Tickets for this special screening will be given away to the first 300 people in line at the Lucasfilm's 7th Annual Star Wars Fan Movie Challenge, held on Thursday at 8:30pm in Ballroom 20. Fanboys director Kyle Newman will be on hand to introduce some footage during the awards ceremony before the full-length screening at 10:30pm. Right on! But then came this quote from the film's producer Kevin Spacey: "I could not be more excited that 'Fanboys' is being released this September and is the version of the film that the fans want. I am enormously grateful to Jedi Knight Harvey Weinstein for having allowed Trigger Street to restore "Fanboys" to its original story and am thrilled that it will first screen during Comic-Con." Unfortunately, an exact date did not follow those words, but it's definitely nice to know the film will arrive (hopefully in theaters and NOT straight to DVD) with its original story in only a month or so from now. Double right on! You bet Cinematical will be attending this screening, and we'll try our best to get you folks the inside word from the Fanboys creators as it all goes down. May the force be with you ... and feel free to read the official press release after the jump. [via IESB]Continue reading 'Fanboys' to Screen Comic-Con and Hit Theaters in September! What Are You Watching: 'The Dark Knight', 'Mamma Mia' or ...
from Cinematical July 17, 2008
Filed under: Action, Animation, Drama, Music & Musicals, New Releases, Fandom, Exhibition, Family Films, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Remakes and Sequels I'm fairly certain that a good majority of you will be taking full advantage of the summer weather this weekend by playing some friendly summertime games with the neighborhood children. However, if you happen to get the urge to visit your local multiplex (or IMAX theater) to watch one of them moving pictures in color and surround sound, then we here at Cinematical would be interested to know what you'll be watching. In one corner we have the year's heavyweight champ of movie marketing in The Dark Knight. He's big, he's a bat and he's ready to take your hard-earned dollars. In another corner, we have one of Broadway's most beloved musicals arriving on the big screen for the first time: Mamma Mia! For the kids too young for Batman, we also have Space Chimps -- and for those in desperate need of an indie fix, we have Transsiberian. I'm happy to say there's a little something for everyone this weekend ... but what will you be watching? View Poll Permalink | Email this | Comments

SITE Santa Fe was founded in 1995 to provide the general public, and in particular the extensive group of artists in Santa Fe, with access to global contemporary art. Some of the most known artists live here in New Mexico such as Bruce Nauman, Richard Tuttle and Susan Rothenberg. The idea to hold a biennial exhibition was there from the beginning. SITE Santa Fe s biennials were conceived by now renowned curators like Bruce Ferguson, Francesco Bonami or Robert Storr (the curator of 2007 Venice Biennial). This year s biennial has been curated by Lance M. Fung and is called Lucky Number Seven . In this episode, SITE Santa Fe s director Laura Heon talks about the mission of SITE Santa Fe, the opening weekend, and why she chose Lance M.
