May 14, 2008 Episode from The Future And You on May 14, 2008 15 views
Paul Fischer, Information Technology professional and one of podcastingâs pioneers, is our guest today. The team of Paul Fischer and Martha Holloway are widely known for their Balticon Podcast and A.D.D. Podcast. In this interview Paul describes: How cellular phone companies manage to charge $3 for only part of a song when the entire song can be bought on Amazon.com for under a dollar. And why this eight billion dollar ringtone business in the US is even worse in Europe where ringtones cost individual users about $30 per year, every year, because they are rented. How the F.C.C. has failed the American public in their assigned mission, and why they do not care that they have failed. Ways the American cell phone companies have perverted the rules that are supposed to govern their operations. The sad fact that Police and Fire Department cellular systems all take a back seat to commercial cellular systems in terms of quality, bandwidth, priority and deployment. And which cities are taking serious steps to fix this problem. Why the Japanese all have better cell phone service and bandwidth than Americans, so much so that watching live streaming internet TV on their cell phones has lost its novelty. Hosted by Stephen Euin Cobb, this is the May 14, 2008 episode of The Future And You. [Running time: 58 minutes] Paul Fischer also talks about his involvement with Balticon, and how this led him and Martha Holloway to create the Balticon Podcast. He mentions that Neil Gaiman was one of his favorite guests, and describes Neil Gaiman as a joy to interview, a genuinely nice guy, as well as a modern renaissance man who seems to do everything well. Paul also talks about his interviews with others including the brilliant artist Joe Bergeron.

Skepticality #077 - Don't Be Such a Scientist! - Interview: Dr. Randy Olson from Skepticality - Science and Revolutionary Ideas on May 13, 2008 12 views
Over the past several episodes, Skepticality has interviewed some of theÂnotable scientists featured in the new pro-Intelligent Design documentaryÂExpelled: No Intelligence Allowed. This week, the last word on theÂcontroversy goes to Dr. Randy Olson, theÂbiologist-turned-filmmaker whose 2006 documentary Flock of Dodos: TheÂEvolution â Intelligent Design CircusÂexamined the communication breakdownÂbetween the science community and the rest of the world on the subject of evolution.  Dr. Olson strives to improve the reputation ofÂscience in the court of public opinion, where the Religious Right and Intelligent Design movements continue to wedge their way in by "teachingÂthe controversy."ÂÂOn his "Shifting Baselines" blog, Dr. Olson was one ofÂthe first scientists to express concern that the well-fundedÂExpelledÂwas likely to succeed in selling its message to a tremendous number of people. The "dodos" of theÂblogosphere responded with incredulity. At the request of many skepticalityÂlisteners, we're pleased to feature this week's interview with Dr. Olson about his controversial opinions â andÂabout his new film,ÂSizzle: A Global Warming Comedy.

Can a scientific illiterate 'debate' science? from Most Discussed on May 13, 2008 15 views
Venomfangx has asked if I would like to debate with him, and I would be grateful if someone would forward him this video. The answer of course is I have about as much interest in 'debating' venomfangx as Stephen Hawkings has in debating Miss Teen South Carolina on General Relativity in the context of black holes. Venomfangx has the track record of a scientific illiterate. There is no documented case in history where a scientific illiterate has made a paradigm shift contribution to the knowledge of mankind. Could VFX be the first? Well that's for him to establish, but the precedent of the entire of human history says no. Naturally if VFX can establish that there is some reason why he is not a creationist moron whose most significant role in life is to give everyone someone who they can laugh at without fear of reprisal, then I would be happy to debate with him. However tautologically if venomfangx is some world class genius just masquerading under the mask of being an uneducated IDiot, then why would he be wasting his time 'debating' people on youtube. 10 Books That Screwed Up the World: Part 2 from Intelligent Design The Future on May 12, 2008 3 views
On this episode of ID the Future, Discovery Institute Senior Fellow Benjamin Wiker continues the discussion begun in the last podcast. Continuing through his survey of his new book, 10 Books That Screwed Up the World: And 5 Others That Didn't Help, Dr. Wiker sets his sights on Charles Darwin's The Descent of Man and its clear connections to the ideologies of Friedrich Nietzsche, Adolf Hitler, and Margaret Sanger. Spotlighting Darwin's own words in context, Wiker demonstrates how the reprehensible philosophies of these three figures were the direct descendants of Darwin's own thoughts.
