Let's face it the EV1 commercials sucked. They all looked like something out of a bad Sci-Fi film. Not the proper way to sell a car. I decided to make my own commercial using footage from "Who Killed The Electric Car?". It's a really fine documentary that everybody should watch. I decided to go ahead and use the woman's voice asking "how does it work" because admittedly I've always thought that aspect of the commercial(s) was pretty cool. Especially the Superbowl add where she says "the electric car is here". I added that dialog, with footage of the car, set to "What I've Done" by Linkin Park. I think it turned out pretty cool! American Hi Definition and Sweetwater Digital of Van Nuys, CA, hosted the first annual Renewable L.A., a day long "consumption-lite" eco fest, celebrating renewable energy and transportation. The first annual solar open house and green holiday gift event put a spotlight on the largest solar installation in the area, constructed by Energy Efficiency Solar of Pomona, CA, comprised of 600, 190-watt individual solar panels. In addition to test rides of two Vectrix Maxi-Scooters and three ZENN's, the over 300 visitors who attended the event had a special treat when an EV1, one of the handful not notoriously crushed in 2005 by the all-electric car's maker, GM, made a surprise appearance, driving onto the event's parking lot. I spoke with Alexandra Paul, actress, EV1 advocate and activist, who appeared in the movie, Who Killed the Electric Car, about the momentous occasion. AeroVironment is a Monrovia, Calif.-based pioneer in the conception and development of alternative energy vehicles, having helped to develop the solar-powered GM Sunraycer and the all-electric GM Impact, a prototype for General Motors' EV-1 electric automobile, and others. If you watched the movie, Who Killed the Electric Car?, their at-home electric vehicle battery charging appliance was prominently featured. So it's no surprise that they were quite disappointed when the EV-1 project was cancelled by GM after spending so much time, money and energy had been spent to develop the technology. But all was not lost, as it helped serve the electric forklift and airport vehicle business for them. Last week, the company reached another milestone with their fast charge system for electric vehicles, the AV-900, by demonstrating for representatives of the California Air Resources Board the capability of fully charging a lithium chemistry electric vehicle battery pack in less than ten minutes. (The battery pack was developed by Altair Nanotechnologies, designed for use in the Phoenix Motorcar Sport Utility Truck, and at 35kWh (kilowatt-hour), it's designed to allow the truck to travel more than 100 miles on a single charge.)
